Most two-post units rated in the 9,000 to 12,000 lb range call for a minimum of 4 inches of structurally sound, unreinforced or reinforced concrete at 3,000 PSI, poured within the last 28 days of curing before anchor installation. For new construction or a re-pour, we recommend a minimum #4 rebar grid on 12-inch centers, positioned at mid-depth, not sitting on the base gravel. If you’re retrofitting an existing municipal garage, we run a rebar locator before drilling anchor holes so we never hit steel and shatter it. Getting this step right the first time saves a fleet manager from an expensive re-anchor job two years down the road when a lift starts to rock under load.

Anchor Pull Tests: The Step Most Shops Skip

Every anchor for above ground lifts needs a pull test after installation, and this is the single most skipped step we see across Iowa fleet garages. A pull test verifies the anchor can withstand the rated tension load before a vehicle ever goes up. Concrete isn’t the only physical constraint fleet managers overlook. We regularly measure bay ceiling height before recommending a specific above ground lifts model, because a 174-inch rise two-post lift needs real headroom, especially with light bar or antenna equipment left mounted during service. Overhead door tracks, sprinkler heads, and HVAC ductwork all compete for the same vertical space.
