Symmetric arms on the AC1234-4 sit the vehicle centered between the columns, which is the layout most shops default to because it’s familiar and predictable. For seasonal storage — the boats, ATVs, and extra trucks that come in around Labor Day and don’t leave until ice-out — symmetric placement is fine because nobody’s climbing underneath while it’s parked. The vehicle goes up, stays balanced, and takes up a known footprint you can plan a whole storage bay around.

Where symmetric arms start to cost you is on the service side. If you ever want to drop a vehicle onto the AC1234-4 and actually do brake work, exhaust repair, or suspension service while it’s up, centered arms crowd the space between the columns and make it awkward to get a floor jack or transmission jack into position. We’ve had shop owners near the lakes tell us they didn’t think about that until their first busy Saturday, when a walk-in needed front brakes and the storage vehicle on the lift was in the way of doing it efficiently. If your AC1234-4 is strictly a parking lift with zero service work planned, symmetric is the simpler, cheaper path.

An asymmetric AC1234-4 lets you rack a vehicle up top and still run a full service job on a car parked underneath, without playing tetris around the columns. The tradeoff is a slightly more complex setup and a marginally larger footprint requirement on some configurations, so it’s worth confirming your bay dimensions before you commit. Seasonal Storage Math for the Great Lakes Region

Iowa Great Lakes shops deal with a compressed, intense storage season — everything comes in around the same few weeks in fall and leaves around the same few weeks in spring. That means the AC1234-4 isn’t idle equipment sitting empty most of the year; it’s either packed or it’s open for service work, with very little in between. Getting the arm configuration right matters more here than in a shop with steady, spread-out storage demand.

We recommend owners actually count their storage customers by vehicle type before ordering. A lineup of pontoon trailers and side-by-sides behaves differently under a four-post lift than sedans and pickups do, and asymmetric arms handle the wider variety better because you’re not fighting arm placement every time a different body style comes through. If your storage list is mostly uniform vehicles, symmetric can still work fine and save you some cost. But mixed fleets are where asymmetric earns its price difference fast.

Runway Length and Drive-On Considerations

Both arm configurations on the AC1234-4 are built around a drive-on runway design, but how that runway interacts with your bay layout differs depending on symmetric versus asymmetric setup. Symmetric runways are simpler to plan around because the vehicle footprint stays consistent and centered, which some owners prefer when they’re also trying to line up multiple lifts in a row for maximum storage density.

Asymmetric setups ask a little more of your layout planning since the offset changes where the vehicle actually sits relative to your walls, support columns, and neighboring lifts. We walk through this with every Iowa shop before installation, measuring actual bay dimensions rather than working off blueprints, because older buildings around the lakes region often have support posts or low spots that blueprints don’t account for. Getting this measurement right before the AC1234-4 arrives saves a change order later.

Weight Capacity and Vehicle Mix Around the Lakes

The AC1234-4 is rated to handle a broad mix of vehicles, but shop owners near the lakes should think through their actual customer base rather than assuming any vehicle will fit any arm configuration equally well. Installation and Ceiling Clearance in Existing Buildings
