A First-Year Story: From Install Day to First Real Service

One collector we worked with in the Cedar Rapids area had a beautiful three-bay garage, a rotating collection of six vehicles, and a slab poured for parking — not for lifting. He wanted an ALI certified 2 post lift for suspension and shock work on a couple of his older cars, the kind of work where you’re cranking, prying, and putting real side load on the columns. We walked the shop, checked the slab, and had to deliver the news nobody likes hearing: the existing floor wasn’t going to hold anchors for the lift he wanted.

Rather than force it, we helped him plan a small pour-out section just for the lift footprint, sized to what the columns actually needed. Install day went smooth because the groundwork was already right. Six months later when he called us in for his first real service — checking anchor torque, cable tension, and hydraulic fluid — everything was exactly where it should be. No creeping columns, no re-torquing anchors that had already loosened. That’s the difference a properly speced slab makes over the life of ALI certified 2 post lifts, and it’s the number one reason we ask about concrete before we ever talk lift model.

Why Slab Thickness Isn’t Optional With a Two-Post

A two-post lift concentrates enormous point loads into four small anchor zones. Every ALI certification test that matters is built around the assumption of a proper slab — the certification covers the lift itself, but it can’t overcome six inches of cracked, spalled, or underlayed concrete. Most manufacturers spec a minimum of 4 inches of structurally sound concrete at 3,000 PSI, though we generally recommend 4.5 to 6 inches for anything in the 10,000 lb and up range, especially in a garage that sees temperature swings like ours does in Iowa.

The freeze-thaw cycle here is brutal on older slabs. We’ve pulled core samples from garages built in the 1970s and 80s that looked fine on the surface but were honeycombed with air pockets three inches down — concrete that had been through forty Iowa winters. That’s not a knock on the original pour, it’s just what happens over decades. Before we install any lift, we do a visual inspection and, when there’s any doubt, a core test. It’s a small step that saves a collector from finding out the hard way, mid-lift, that the floor wasn’t ready.

Rebar, Mesh, and What Actually Reinforces a Lift Pad

Reinforcement matters almost as much as thickness. A slab poured with wire mesh alone is a different animal than one poured with rebar on a proper grid, and for a dedicated lift pad we recommend rebar over mesh every time. Mesh resists surface cracking under light loads, but it doesn’t do much for the concentrated point loading a two-post lift’s anchors create. Rebar, properly spaced and tied, spreads that load across a wider section of slab and resists the kind of hairline cracking that eventually turns into anchor pull-out.

For collectors pouring a new pad specifically for a lift, we recommend a rebar grid, not just decorative reinforcement dropped in as an afterthought. We also push for a slab that extends well beyond the footprint of the lift itself — a common mistake is pouring a pad exactly the size of the lift’s base plates, which leaves nothing to contain the load once vehicles are moving and shifting weight around the columns. A little extra concrete on the pour is cheap insurance against a bigger problem down the road.

Suspension and Shock Work Puts Extra Strain on the Base

Suspension and shock replacement isn’t gentle work. You’re breaking loose seized bolts, using a breaker bar or impact gun, and sometimes putting the full weight of your body into a stuck component while the vehicle sits eight feet in the air. That kind of side load and vibration transmits straight down through the columns into the anchors, and it’s exactly the scenario where a marginal slab reveals itself. We’ve seen anchors back out slowly over months of this kind of work on a slab that was borderline to begin with.

This is part of why we spend time talking through actual use case, not just vehicle weight, when a collector is speccing a lift. Suspension work is harder on a lift’s anchoring than routine oil changes and inspections. If that’s the primary use, we’ll often recommend going up a size in slab thickness recommendation and being more conservative about anchor spacing, even if the vehicles themselves are lighter passenger cars. It costs a little more up front and saves a lot of frustration later.

Choosing Between Overhead and Baseplate Models for a Collector Garage

Collector garages often have lower ceilings than commercial shops, which changes which ALI certified 2 post lifts even make sense. A baseplate model runs its hydraulic and safety lines along the floor rather than overhead, which is the right call in a garage with sub-12-foot ceilings or exposed rafters that an overhead unit’s crossbar would clash with. An overhead model is generally the sturdier, more common choice where ceiling height allows, since it keeps hydraulic lines out of the walking path entirely.

We walk every collector through both configurations before recommending one, because the wrong choice creates daily annoyance even if the lift itself performs fine. A too-tall lift in a low garage means ducking under lines every time you walk between bays. A baseplate model in a shop with plenty of headroom just means a slightly busier floor. Neither is wrong — it’s about matching the model to the actual building, not defaulting to whatever’s most popular.

What ALI Certification Actually Buys a Collector

ALI certification means the lift has been independently tested against ANSI/ALI ALCTV safety standards — load testing, structural analysis, and control function review by a third party, not just a manufacturer’s own claims. For a collector with cars worth real money sitting eight feet in the air, that independent verification matters. It’s the difference between trusting a marketing brochure and trusting a lab report.

We only install and stock brands that carry this certification for exactly this reason. When a collector asks us why one lift costs more than a similar-looking model online, the certification and the testing behind it is usually the answer. It’s not a sticker — it’s a documented engineering standard the lift had to pass before it could carry the label.

Maintenance That Protects Both the Slab and the Lift

Once the slab and the lift are both right, ongoing maintenance is what keeps them that way. We recommend collectors check anchor torque annually, more often if the lift sees heavy use like frequent suspension work. Anchors can loosen slightly even in good concrete simply from thermal cycling and vibration, and catching that early is a five-minute check versus a bigger repair later.

We also recommend a visual inspection of the slab around each base plate every year — looking for any new hairline cracking radiating out from the anchor holes. Caught early, that’s a simple epoxy repair. Left alone, it can progress to the point where anchors won’t hold torque at all. For any collector we’ve installed for, that annual check is part of the service visit, and it’s the cheapest insurance policy in the whole garage.
