Sequencing: Why the Lift Decision Comes First, Not Last

The single biggest mistake we see in home garage buildouts is choosing paint colors, storage cabinets, and lighting before locking in which lift is going in the bay. ALI certified 2 post lifts have real footprint and clearance requirements — column spacing, overhead rise, and floor anchoring depth — that dictate where everything else goes. If you frame in a workbench or install a garage door opener rail before you know your lift’s column placement, you can end up with a support post exactly where an arm needs to swing, or a door track too low for the raised vehicle to clear.

A lot of newer home garages get a 4-inch slab, which is fine for parking cars but often not enough for anchoring a two-post lift safely, especially at higher capacity ratings. We ask about slab thickness and age on every quote call, because installing a certified lift into an under-spec floor voids the safety margin the certification is actually built on.

If you’re pouring new for this project, this is the easiest problem to solve — talk to your concrete contractor about a 4.5 to 6-inch slab with proper rebar in the lift bay specifically, even if the rest of the garage floor is thinner. If you’re retrofitting an existing garage, we can test core samples or review your slab’s age and finish before recommending which lift capacity is realistic. Getting this step wrong doesn’t show up immediately; it shows up two years later when anchor bolts start working loose under normal use.

Power: 110V vs 220V and Why It Changes Your Panel Plans

Most single-cylinder ALI certified 2 post lifts marketed to home garages run on standard 110V household power, but some higher-capacity models want 220V. This is a detail that needs to be locked in before your electrician closes up the walls, not after. We’ve had customers assume their existing garage outlets would work fine, only to find out at delivery that their chosen lift needed a dedicated circuit their panel didn’t have room for.

For a home garage doing occasional oil pan gasket work, brake jobs, and general maintenance, a 110V unit is often plenty and keeps your electrical costs down. But if you’re leaving room to grow into heavier trucks or SUVs down the road, spec the 220V capability into your buildout now — running conduit during framing is a fraction of the cost of trenching a finished garage floor later. Ask your installer which voltage your specific lift model needs before your electrician finalizes the panel and circuit plan.

Clearance for the Work You’ll Actually Do

Oil pan gasket work sounds simple, but it changes your ceiling clearance math because you typically want the vehicle up higher than a basic oil change height to get good visibility and swing a wrench without crouching. That means factoring the lift’s maximum rise plus vehicle height plus safe headroom into your garage’s ceiling height before construction, not as an afterthought once the trusses are already up.

We’ve measured garages where a 9-foot ceiling worked fine for a sedan at a comfortable working height but left almost no margin for a taller pickup or SUV raised to the same working position. If there’s any chance your vehicle mix changes over the years you own this garage, build in extra vertical clearance now. It’s far cheaper to frame two extra feet of wall height during construction than to discover later that your lift can’t safely reach a comfortable working height for gasket and pan work on a taller vehicle.

Column Spacing and Door Placement

Two-post lifts need clear space on both sides for the arms to swing under a vehicle, and that clearance requirement needs to be reconciled with where your garage door, side door, and any support posts land. We see this go wrong constantly in pole building and detached garage projects: a support post gets placed at what seems like a logical spot structurally, and it turns out to sit directly in the lift’s swing path.

Before finalizing your framing plan, overlay your chosen lift’s footprint — including full arm swing radius — onto your floor plan and confirm it against every structural element, not just the walls. This is exactly the kind of detail your lift installer should be reviewing with your contractor directly, and it’s worth the extra week of coordination rather than discovering a conflict after the frame is up and the post can’t move.

Certification and Documentation to Keep on File

When you buy ALI certified 2 post lifts, keep the certification paperwork, not just the sales receipt. If you ever sell the property, refinance for a shop addition, or have an insurance claim involving the garage, documentation that the lift meets a recognized, third-party-tested safety standard matters. We provide this paperwork with every install and recommend storing it with your home’s other permanent-fixture documentation, not in a drawer where it gets lost.

This also matters if you ever have the lift serviced by someone other than the original installer — a tech working on a certified lift needs to know the exact model and rated capacity to service it correctly and safely, and having documentation on hand speeds that up considerably.
