When a European-marque specialty shop in the Sioux City area calls us about an ALI certified car lift, the conversation almost never starts with the lift itself. It starts with the floor, the ceiling height, and whatever assumptions the shop owner has already made about what an installer needs to see. We’ve walked into more than one restoration bay where the crew was certain their slab was ready, only to find out during the site survey that it wasn’t. An ALI certified car lift is only as good as the concrete and clearance it sits on, and getting that part wrong is the single most expensive mistake we see in this business.

Myth: Any Level Concrete Slab Will Work

This is the myth that costs restoration and metal work shops the most money, because it feels true right up until it isn’t. Level is not the same as sufficient. An ALI certified car lift anchors into concrete that has to meet a minimum thickness and cure strength, and older Sioux City shop buildings — especially ones converted from other uses — often have slabs poured decades ago for a completely different load case. We’ve cored slabs that looked flawless on top and found rebar mesh instead of structural depth, or found the slab was actually two thin pours stacked on top of each other with a gap between them.

For restoration and metal work specifically, this matters even more because these lifts get used for extended, static holds — a full frame sitting in the air for days at a time during bodywork — rather than quick in-and-out service. That sustained load rewards a properly specified pad and punishes a marginal one. Before we ever schedule an install, we ask for slab thickness, age, and whether there’s any known rebar or wire mesh, and if the shop doesn’t know, we find out during the site survey. Guessing here is how you end up drilling anchors that never torque to spec, and that’s a problem that shows up on the ALI inspection down the road, not on install day.

Myth: Ceiling Height Only Matters for Overhead Lifts

Shops assume clearance concerns are strictly a baseplate-model or overhead-hoist issue, but that’s not accurate for a two-post car lift either. Once a European sedan or a low-slung restoration project is raised to full height with the arms and adapters attached, the stack height changes with the vehicle, not just the lift. A shop with 12-foot ceilings might be fine for a sedan and tight for anything with a roof rack, a lift kit, or an aftermarket antenna mount still attached during teardown.

We measure from finished floor to the lowest overhead obstruction — not just the ceiling deck, but light fixtures, sprinkler heads, ductwork, and door tracks — because any of those can be the actual limiting factor. In older Sioux City buildings we frequently find sprinkler heads set lower than code minimum for the space, which changes the math on how high you can safely run a lift. This is exactly the kind of detail a proper site survey catches before the order is placed, not after the crate arrives.

Myth: Electrical Hookup Is the Installer’s Problem, Not the Buyer’s

Some shop owners assume the installer just shows up with a cord and plugs in. In reality, most ALI certified car lift models need a dedicated circuit, and the voltage and amperage requirements vary by lift capacity and hydraulic pump. For a restoration shop running multiple lifts, welders, and compressors off the same panel, this is not a minor detail — it’s often the difference between a smooth install and a delayed one.

During our site survey we confirm what’s actually available at the panel, not just what’s on paper, because older buildings get rewired piecemeal over the years and panel labels don’t always match reality. We’d rather find out there’s a shortfall two weeks before install than have our crew standing in the bay with a lift half-assembled and no power to run it. If a panel upgrade is needed, that’s information the shop needs early, not as a surprise.

Myth: The Bay Layout Doesn’t Affect Lift Choice

A lot of shops pick their lift model first and worry about placement later. We’d rather flip that order. Column spacing, drive-through clearance, and how close the lift sits to a neighboring bay all affect which configuration actually fits — and for a shop doing bodywork, you also need room to walk a full 360 degrees around a raised vehicle with tools, panels, and sometimes a second technician in the mix.

We physically walk the bay, measure door swing, and check where support columns or mezzanine framing might interfere with post placement. For restoration work specifically, we also account for the fact that vehicles sometimes sit on the lift without wheels, with the frame supported on adapters instead — that changes the arm geometry you need and rules out some configurations that would otherwise work fine for routine service.

Myth: ALI Certification Is Just a Sticker on the Lift

The certification isn’t decorative. An ALI certified car lift has gone through third-party engineering review confirming it meets ANSI/ALI safety standards for structural design, hydraulics, and locking mechanisms. That matters for insurance, for liability if a technician is ever hurt, and for resale value if the shop ever expands or relocates. But the certification covers the lift as designed — it doesn’t cover a bad install.

This is why the site survey and the certification go hand in hand. A correctly specified ALI certified car lift installed on a marginal slab or with the wrong anchor pattern is no longer performing to the standard it was certified under. We treat the survey as part of honoring that certification, not a separate box to check, and we document anchor torque and slab condition at install so there’s a record if it’s ever questioned.

Myth: You Can Skip the Survey If You’ve Bought Lifts Before

Experienced shop owners sometimes assume that because they’ve installed a lift before, they know what the process needs. But every bay is different, and buildings change — a new HVAC run gets added, a mezzanine gets built, a slab gets patched after a leak. We’ve had returning customers skip details they assumed hadn’t changed, only to find during install that they had.

For a specialty shop with unusual vehicle sizes or extended static loads, this matters even more. We’d rather spend thirty minutes confirming details that turn out to be unchanged than skip the survey and find a surprise with a crew and a crated lift already on site. It’s a small time investment that protects a much larger one.

Myth: Any Installer Can Handle the Prep Work

Not every installer runs a real site survey before quoting a job, and that shows up later in ways that are expensive to fix. Anchoring, electrical, clearance, and bay layout all interact with each other, and missing one usually means redoing work on the others. We’ve been called in to fix installs where the lift itself was fine but the prep work behind it wasn’t done right the first time.

For a European specialty shop investing in restoration-grade equipment, the install prep is where the real value gets protected or lost. We run the survey, document the slab and electrical, and confirm layout before the lift ever leaves the warehouse, because that’s the only way an ALI certified car lift performs the way it’s supposed to for the life of the equipment.
