Myth: Any ALI Certified Lift Fits Any Bay the Same Way

The certification tells you the lift was engineered and tested to meet ANSI/ALI ALCTV safety standards. It does not tell you the lift’s arm sweep, overall footprint, or column placement will suit your bay’s specific dimensions. If the bay layout doesn’t leave clearance for arm restow and full extension, technicians start improvising — sliding the car forward on the pads, using shorter arm adapters that weren’t rated for the application, or skipping the lock-in check because it’s inconvenient in that spot. None of that is a lift problem. It’s a layout problem that a proper site walk before install would have caught.

Mistake: Ignoring Ceiling Height and Overhead Clearance

A two-post lift rated for the vehicle weight can still be the wrong choice if the shop’s ceiling height wasn’t checked against full-rise clearance plus vehicle height plus arm sweep radius. We’ve measured southern Minnesota shop bays where the numbers worked on paper for a sedan but failed the moment a European wagon or crossover with a roof rack came through the door. ALI certified car lifts are engineered to a standard, but the standard doesn’t account for your building.

This mistake shows up most in shops that expanded into European specialty work after starting as general repair shops. The original bay was sized for the lift they had, not the lift they need now. Before ordering any lift, we walk the physical space, measure ceiling height at the exact install point, and confirm arm reach and rise height against the tallest vehicle the shop expects to service. Get the workflow wrong and you either slow every job down by minutes that add up over a week, or techs start taking shortcuts to avoid the friction — which is exactly how safety habits erode over time.

Mistake: Skipping the Concrete Assessment

Every two-post lift installation depends on the concrete slab meeting minimum thickness and cure-time specifications, and this doesn’t change because the lift carries ALI certification. We’ve had to turn down installs in southern Minnesota shops where the existing slab was original construction, undersized for the anchor bolt pattern required, or simply too old and cracked to trust with a loaded lift. ALI certified car lifts still rely on a proper foundation — the certification covers the equipment, not your floor.

Shops sometimes assume that because the previous lift worked fine in that spot, any replacement will too. But different lift models have different anchor patterns and point loads, and specialty European work often means heavier lifts than the shop used previously if they’re now handling larger SUVs and wagons in addition to sedans. Mistake: Overlooking Technician Training on the New Equipment

We’ve seen brand-new, correctly installed lifts operated incorrectly within the first month because nobody walked the technicians through proper lock engagement, load positioning for offset differential work, or the lift’s specific arm restraint procedure. Every lift model has small operational differences, and assuming a tech’s experience on a different brand transfers perfectly is a common and avoidable mistake.

Shops sometimes size a lift purely to gross vehicle weight and stop there, without considering that differential fluid service means sustained mid-height work with the vehicle loaded and technicians moving underneath repeatedly during a single job. ALI certified car lifts are rated for static and dynamic load, but rating alone doesn’t tell you whether the arm configuration suits low-clearance European subframes or whether the lift’s height range lets a tech work comfortably without excessive stooping.

We ask shops what percentage of their bay time goes to fluid services versus brake work versus diagnostics, because the answer changes which lift model actually fits. A shop doing heavy differential and drivetrain fluid work benefits from different arm and pad configurations than one doing mostly brake and suspension work. Buying based on weight rating alone, without matching to job type, is how shops end up with a technically certified lift that technicians quietly avoid using for certain jobs.

Mistake: Treating Certification as a One-Time Checkbox

The final mistake is assuming that once ALI certified car lifts are installed, the safety conversation is over. Certification reflects how the lift was designed and manufactured — ongoing safety depends on inspection, maintenance, and how the bay is used day to day. We recommend annual inspections at minimum, and more frequent checks for shops running high daily cycle counts. A lift that was perfectly safe on installation day can develop wear issues within a year if nobody’s checking cable tension, hydraulic seals, or anchor bolt torque.
