If you’re specing an alignment machine with lift for a European-marque specialty shop, the equipment is the easy part — the sequencing of your garage build-out is where most shops get burned. We’ve walked into more than one shop along the Iowa-Nebraska border that bought a beautiful alignment scissor lift, only to discover the concrete wasn’t rated for it, the bay was six inches too short for the turnplates, or the aligner cameras had no clean sightline once the lift was bolted down. As an Iowa-based installer and parts distributor, we’ve seen every version of this mistake, and we’re going to walk through the myths that cause them.

Myth #1: Any Scissor Lift Works as an Alignment Rack

The biggest myth we hear from European specialty shops is that any drive-on scissor lift can double as an alignment machine with lift capability. It can’t, at least not safely or accurately. A true alignment scissor lift has an open front design so the aligner’s turnplates and slip plates sit unobstructed, plus a rise height and platform length matched to long-wheelbase German sedans and wagons. Standard service lifts often have crossmembers or a closed front that block turnplate travel, and the deck length can shortchange a long-wheelbase 5 Series or Q7.

We also see shops assume that because a lift is rated for the vehicle’s weight, it’s automatically alignment-ready. Weight rating and alignment-readiness are two different specs. An alignment machine with lift setup needs level, flat runways with turnplate pockets built in, not just enough hydraulic capacity to hold the car in the air. Before you buy, confirm the lift model is actually marketed and built as an alignment lift, not a general service lift someone is trying to repurpose because it’s cheaper.

Myth #2: The Aligner Can Go Anywhere in the Bay

Camera-based aligners need sightlines, and European daily-maintenance shops often run tighter bays than domestic-focused shops because of parts storage and specialty tooling. We’ve measured bays along the Iowa-Nebraska border where the owner wanted the alignment machine with lift jammed against a back wall, not realizing the camera towers needed clear line of sight to targets on all four wheels with no support columns or tool carts in the way.

Get your bay dimensions to us before you order equipment, not after. We’ll map out tower placement, minimum clearance behind and in front of the lift, and ceiling height for camera columns. A rushed placement decision is the single most common reason shops end up re-running conduit or moving a lift six months after install — and that’s an expense nobody budgets for.

Myth #3: Concrete Doesn’t Matter If the Lift Is Lighter-Duty

Because alignment scissor lifts look lower-profile than a two-post, some shop owners assume the concrete requirements are lighter too. Not true. The scissor mechanism concentrates load into a smaller footprint than you’d think, and older Euro specialty shops that started in converted garages often have four-inch slab with no rebar, which won’t hold anchor bolts to spec.

Before you commit to an alignment machine with lift, get a core sample or at minimum a visual inspection of slab thickness and age. We routinely turn up 3.5-inch slabs in older buildings that need a poured pad addition before installation can happen. Finding this out after the lift arrives on a truck costs you storage fees and a delayed install — finding it out during the planning phase costs you nothing but a phone call.

Myth #4: Power and Air Drops Can Be Figured Out Later

Alignment equipment is more electrically demanding than most shops expect — the console, printer, camera towers, and lift controls often need dedicated circuits, and some models want 220V. We’ve shown up to installs where the shop ran a single 110V outlet to the corner of the bay and expected the aligner, the lift, and a shop light to share it.

Sequence this correctly: get the electrical spec sheet from us before your electrician’s first visit, not after. The same goes for air lines if your lift or turnplate locks are air-actuated. Doing electrical and air work concurrently with the concrete and lift install saves you a second contractor trip and keeps your build-out on schedule instead of stretching into weeks of waiting on subcontractors.

Myth #5: You Can Install the Lift Before Deciding on the Aligner Brand

This one trips up more shops than any other. Turnplate cutouts, runway spacing, and even lift width can vary slightly between aligner brands and models. If you pour concrete and set anchor bolts for a generic alignment lift footprint before confirming your aligner brand, you risk a mismatch that requires re-drilling.

Lock in both the alignment machine with lift and the aligner unit as a matched order, ideally from one supplier who coordinates the fit. We spec these together specifically to avoid the scenario where a shop’s new camera aligner doesn’t seat cleanly on turnplates from a different manufacturer’s lift.

Myth #6: DIY Installation Saves Real Money

We get calls regularly from shop owners who want a price on just the lift and aligner with no installation, planning to handle it themselves. For a basic service lift, that can work. For an alignment machine with lift, the calibration tolerances are tight enough that a slightly out-of-level installation throws off every alignment you run afterward, silently, for months.

Professional installation isn’t just about getting the lift bolted to the floor — it’s about leveling the runways to the tolerance the aligner manufacturer specifies and verifying calibration once everything’s connected. The labor cost of professional install is small compared to the comebacks and warranty claims from alignments run on an out-of-level rack.

Myth #7: One Alignment Bay Is Enough for a Growing Shop

European specialty shops doing daily maintenance work — oil services, brake jobs, and alignments back to back — often outgrow a single alignment bay faster than they planned. We’ve seen shops near the Iowa-Nebraska border try to squeeze alignment work into a bay that’s also doing general service, creating a bottleneck where the most profitable service in the shop sits idle waiting for a routine oil change to clear out.

If your five-year plan includes growth, build out with a second lift bay in mind even if you’re not installing it now. Running conduit, air lines, and leaving a clear concrete pad for a future alignment machine with lift saves you from tearing into a finished shop floor later. Plan the sequence once, correctly, and you won’t revisit it for a decade.
