We recently worked with a fleet operator weighing two different configurations for daily maintenance — one built around a single heavy-duty lift wired for three-phase power, and one built around a lighter-duty setup running on standard single-phase 220V service. Both work. Both have real tradeoffs in cost, install complexity, and how much daily abuse they can take. Configuration One: Single-Phase 220V for Lighter Daily Loads

The first configuration we compared uses a standard single-phase 220V, 30-amp circuit, which is what most western Illinois shops already have running to at least one bay. The catch is availability and cost. A lot of older shop buildings in western Illinois, especially converted retail or ag-service buildings, were never wired for three-phase service. Always pull the electrical spec sheet for the exact model before running conduit, and size the breaker with a safety margin rather than to the bare minimum.

We coordinate with electricians on installs regularly, and the jobs that go smoothly are the ones where the circuit gets roughed in before the lift shows up, based on real spec numbers rather than assumptions. Daily Maintenance Workflow: How the Two Setups Perform Under Real Use

In actual daily use, the difference between these two configurations shows up most clearly during busy days. A single-phase setup handling routine daily maintenance — a handful of oil changes and tire jobs with an occasional alignment thrown in — rarely gets stressed. But if a small fleet operator adds a second technician or starts scheduling back-to-back alignments during peak season, that single-phase motor works harder and the duty-cycle limitation becomes noticeable, sometimes requiring brief cool-down periods between jobs.

The three-phase configuration, by contrast, shows its value on the heaviest, busiest days precisely when you need reliability most. Fleets running dually pickups or straight trucks through daily maintenance report smoother lift cycles and less perceived motor strain under repeated use. If your fleet composition includes heavier vehicles or your shop runs two shifts, that reliability difference during high-cycle periods often justifies the higher electrical install cost over the equipment’s working life.

Concrete and Anchoring Considerations for Either Setup

Electrical service isn’t the only infrastructure question — your slab needs to support whichever alignment machine with lift you choose. Heavier three-phase-capable racks generally require thicker concrete and deeper anchor embedment than lighter single-phase units, so if you’re leaning toward the heavy-duty configuration, get your slab thickness confirmed before ordering. Shops with in-floor heat need to be especially careful about anchor bolt depth to avoid drilling into heating lines, and epoxy anchoring is often preferred over mechanical anchors in these situations for exactly that reason.

We’ve handled installs where the shop’s existing 6-inch slab was more than adequate for a heavier-duty three-phase alignment rack, and others where a thinner older slab meant the shop had to stick with the lighter single-phase configuration regardless of fleet needs. Get your concrete thickness and condition confirmed as part of your decision, not as an afterthought once the equipment has already been ordered and is sitting on a truck.

Making the Final Call for Your Fleet

For most small fleets doing genuine daily maintenance work in western Illinois — oil changes, brakes, tires, inspections, with alignments as a regular but not overwhelming part of the mix — the single-phase 220V configuration handles an alignment machine with lift just fine and gets you into service faster with less electrical cost. If your fleet skews toward heavier trucks, runs high alignment volume, or you’re planning to scale up bays and throughput over the next few years, the three-phase investment pays for itself in uptime and motor longevity.

Talk through your actual fleet composition and daily cycle count with whoever is quoting your install, and be honest about where your fleet is headed in the next two to three years, not just where it is today. An alignment machine with lift is a long-term investment, and matching the electrical configuration to your real workload — rather than either overbuilding or underbuilding it — is what keeps daily maintenance running smoothly for years instead of becoming a recurring maintenance headache itself.
