On most open-front alignment racks we spec, that’s 12 to 14 inches of clear space between the runway underside and the shop floor at working height — enough for a floor jack under the transmission crossmember while the rack itself holds the frame.

Driveline drops on 4×4 trucks and SUVs need more than clearance — they need a stable platform. We size runway length so the driveshaft has room to swing down without the tech having to unbolt anything at the transfer case first. On a dually pickup, that’s often the difference between a 14,000 lb standard configuration and stepping up to a heavier-rated setup with wider runways. Get the dimensions wrong on the front end and you’ll be shimming and improvising every time a dual-rear-wheel truck rolls in.

Pry Bar Clearance for Caster and Camber Adjustments

This is the complaint we hear constantly from techs doing real alignment work, not just readings: a hydraulic lift that only moves vertically leaves almost no room to get a pry bar between the control arm and the shock or wheel hub when you’re cranking caster into spec. If your alignment machine with lift doesn’t give the tech horizontal working room around the strut tower, every caster adjustment turns into a two-person job — one person on the pry bar, one holding a jack stand in reserve just in case.

The fix isn’t a fancier alignment head. It’s specifying a lift platform with open-front or open-center runway design that gets hydraulic arms and cross-members out of the way of the strut towers entirely. On new 6-inch concrete pours, that’s usually plenty of holding strength for a 15,000 lb rack, but it does mean the install crew needs the floor heat layout before anyone starts drilling.

Logistics matter too. Not every shop has a forklift on site, and we’ve landed installs where a neighbor’s skid steer did all the heavy lifting for getting the rack towers into position inside the building. If dually pickups or full-size 4x4s are common, spec runway width and capacity for them, not for the sedans that used to dominate your bay ten years ago. Arm restraints and cam engagement should be verified in person, not just read off a spec sheet, because tolerances vary even within the same model line.
