Why This Southwest Iowa Shop Needed Alignment Racks, Not Just a Lift
This shop was already running standard 2-post lifts for general service, but as their overlanding build business grew, they were sending every alignment job to a competitor across town. That meant losing the labor margin on a service that naturally follows suspension work, lift kit installs, and rotor upgrades. Every truck that gets a lift kit needs an alignment afterward, and every set of oversized tires changes the geometry enough to require a recheck. Sizing Alignment Racks for Lifted Trucks and Oversized Tires
Standard turnplates and slip plates are sized around passenger car and light truck tire widths. Once you’re running 35s, 37s, or larger, the contact patch and the leverage on the rack change enough that undersized turnplates can bind or wear unevenly fast. We spec’d wider turnplates and reinforced runways for this install specifically because their customer base skews almost entirely toward lifted trucks and SUVs with aftermarket wheel and tire packages.
Ride height was the other variable. A 4-post rack with adjustable ramp height and enough clearance for lift kits, long-travel suspension, and larger diameter tires needs runway height and ramp geometry that a stock configuration doesn’t offer. We also made sure the rolling jack included matched the platform’s height range so techs weren’t struggling to get a jack under a truck sitting eight inches higher than a stock model. Getting these dimensions right up front avoided the kind of retrofit headaches we’ve seen other shops run into after buying a generic rack and discovering it doesn’t clear their typical customer vehicle.
Alignment Racks and Brake Service: Why This Shop Combined Both
The core of this project wasn’t just alignment work — it was building a bay that could handle brake service and rotor swaps on the same platform. Off-road builds go through brake components faster than stock vehicles because of added weight, larger tires changing braking leverage, and the driving conditions these trucks see. Being able to pull wheels, service brakes, and immediately check alignment on the same rack without moving the vehicle saved this shop significant labor time per job.
We configured the install so the alignment racks doubled as a brake service platform with adequate clearance for rotor removal and caliper work at full lift height. That meant confirming lift height range accommodated technicians working standing rather than crouched, which matters for shops doing volume brake work daily. The shop reported back after a few months that combining brake and alignment work on one platform cut their average job time noticeably compared to shuffling trucks between bays.
Calibration Challenges Unique to Modified Vehicles
Calibrating alignment cameras and targets on lifted trucks isn’t the same as calibrating for stock vehicles. Ride height changes affect target visibility and camera angles, and aftermarket suspension components sometimes shift factory reference points the alignment software expects. We spent extra time during commissioning making sure the alignment computer was configured with the correct vehicle profiles and camera positioning to read accurately on lifted platforms, not just factory-height trucks.
This is a step we see other installers skip, especially with big-box equipment sold without on-site commissioning. A rack that’s mechanically installed correctly but not calibrated for the actual vehicle mix a shop services will give technicians bad data, and bad alignment data on a lifted truck can mean uneven tire wear that costs the customer hundreds down the road. We stayed on-site until the shop’s techs ran several live jobs correctly, not just until the rack passed a basic diagnostic check.
What Other Southwest Iowa Shops Should Take From This Install
