ALM stands for above-ground lift model, and in practice most techs use the term loosely to describe any asymmetric two-post lift designed for general repair work rather than heavy alignment or frame service. When someone asks us about an ALM lift for their shop, they’re usually picturing a mid-tier two-post unit somewhere in the 9,000 to 12,000 lb range that handles daily-driver work: brakes, tires, exhaust, and driveline jobs like CV axle and half-shaft swaps. That range covers the vast majority of the vehicles a mobile mechanic in eastern Nebraska is going to see, from full-size trucks to compact crossovers with independent front axles.
The naming gets confusing because different manufacturers and distributors label their asymmetric lift lines differently, so when a customer says they want an ALM lift, our first question is always what vehicles they’re servicing and how much ceiling or trailer height they have to work with. That answer determines whether we point them toward an overhead configuration or a baseplate model, and it’s a bigger factor in job efficiency than most people expect until they’re three axles into a Saturday.

The tradeoff is ceiling height. Overhead configurations typically need 12 feet or more of clearance depending on the lift’s rise, which rules them out for a lot of older shop buildings, pole barns, and definitely for anything mounted inside a mobile service trailer. If you’ve got the height, overhead is the more comfortable lift to work under all day for axle-heavy work, but it’s not a universal answer, and we always measure the space before we recommend it.
Baseplate Configuration for Mobile and Low-Ceiling Setups
Baseplate two-post lifts connect the posts with a floor-level plate instead of an overhead beam, which drops the ceiling requirement significantly and makes them the practical choice for converted trailers, low pole barns, and rented bays with limited height. For a mobile mechanic covering eastern Nebraska out of a trailer setup, baseplate was really the only viable option, since there was no overhead structure to anchor a beam to anyway.
The downside is the plate itself sits on the shop floor between the posts, and on CV axle jobs you do need to step over or around it more than you would with overhead clearance. We generally steer people away from buying at the exact edge of their heaviest vehicle’s weight, since a lift running near its rated max constantly wears faster and gives you less safety margin during axle pulls when there’s extra force on the vehicle.
It’s also worth thinking about arm reach and pad configuration for axle work specifically. Frame-contact pads need to clear the pinch welds and give you a straight shot at the lower control arms and axle nuts without the arms themselves blocking your swing hammer path. Whether you land on overhead or baseplate, the decision should be driven by your actual ceiling height, floor type, and vehicle mix — not by whichever configuration you saw on someone else’s shop tour. If you’re mobile or working in a low-clearance building, baseplate is almost always the answer.
