When an independent shop owner in Iowa City called us about upgrading their oil change bay, the question wasn’t whether they needed an ALM lift — it was which configuration actually fit their space and workflow. We do site surveys for shops across eastern Iowa every month, and oil change and fluid service bays almost always come down to a choice between two layouts: a drive-through two-post setup versus a compact in-bay configuration built around a narrower footprint. Configuration One: Drive-Through Two-Post Layout

The first setup we walked through was a standard drive-through two-post ALM lift, positioned so cars enter from the front bay door and exit out the back. This layout works well for oil change and fluid service because technicians get full underside access with the vehicle at a comfortable working height, and there’s no need to back cars in or maneuver around columns awkwardly. For shops doing high volume — ten, fifteen, twenty cars a day through one bay — the drive-through flow shaves real time off each job because there’s less repositioning between vehicles.

The tradeoff is footprint. A drive-through configuration needs clear space on both ends of the bay, plus enough width for the columns without crowding a technician’s tool cart or fluid dispensing reels. For the Iowa City shop we surveyed, this meant reworking where their oil storage and filter racks sat, since the original layout had shelving too close to where the columns needed to go. It’s a great setup for shops with room to dedicate a full bay to fluid service alone, but it doesn’t flex well if that same bay occasionally needs to double for brake or suspension work requiring different lift points.

Configuration Two: Compact In-Bay Layout

The second option we priced out was a narrower footprint ALM lift designed to fit into a tighter bay without requiring a drive-through path. This configuration works by positioning the lift so vehicles back in or pull in from a single opening, and it’s a common choice for older Iowa City buildings where bay width was never designed around modern two-post equipment. It sacrifices some of the workflow speed of a drive-through setup but makes up for it in flexibility — the same bay can handle oil changes, tire work, and light undercar diagnostics without needing to be a single-purpose station.

For an independent shop juggling walk-in oil changes alongside general repair work, this flexibility often matters more than raw throughput. We’ve installed this configuration in several older Iowa City and Coralville buildings where knocking out a wall to widen a bay wasn’t in the budget. The compact layout also tends to cost less in site prep since it doesn’t require as much clearance reworking, though the lift equipment itself is comparable in price to the drive-through option.

Ceiling Height and Clearance Checks

Both configurations need adequate ceiling clearance, but it matters more for fluid service specifically because technicians want the vehicle high enough to work standing upright rather than crouching under a partially raised car. We measure clearance from floor to the lowest overhead obstruction — ductwork, sprinkler heads, lighting fixtures — before quoting either layout, because an ALM lift that can’t reach full working height in a given bay isn’t actually a usable oil change station, it’s just an expensive parking spot.

The Iowa City shop we worked with had one bay with newer ductwork installed lower than the rest of the building, which ruled out the taller working height they wanted for the drive-through configuration in that specific spot. We ended up recommending the compact layout for that bay and reserving the drive-through option for a different bay with better overhead clearance. This is exactly the kind of detail that a spec sheet comparison alone won’t catch — you have to measure the actual building.

Site Prep Differences Between the Two Layouts

Drive-through installations generally need a more even slab across a longer span, since both sets of columns need solid, level anchoring points and any dip or crack between them can cause alignment issues over time. Compact layouts have a smaller footprint to anchor into, which sometimes means less concrete work is needed, but older slabs in older Iowa City buildings can still have hidden issues that only show up once you core-drill for anchors.

We always recommend a site survey before finalizing either configuration, because the cost difference between the two layouts can shrink or grow significantly depending on what the existing slab and electrical service can support. A shop that assumes the compact option is automatically cheaper is sometimes wrong — if the drive-through slab is in better shape and the compact bay needs new concrete, the numbers can flip. We give clients both prep estimates side by side so the comparison stays honest.

Which Configuration Suits Higher Oil Change Volume

If your shop’s business model leans heavily on volume — quick, in-and-out fluid service with minimal dwell time per car — the drive-through configuration usually wins on efficiency once it’s installed. Technicians aren’t waiting on vehicles to be repositioned, and a well-trained crew can move cars through noticeably faster over a full day. For shops doing dozens of oil changes daily, that time savings adds up to real revenue over months and years.

But volume alone shouldn’t be the only factor. The Iowa City shop we surveyed does strong oil change volume but also handles brake jobs, suspension work, and general repairs in the same bays throughout the week. For a shop with that kind of mixed workload, locking a bay into a single-purpose drive-through configuration can actually reduce overall bay utilization, even if it’s faster for oil changes specifically. We always ask about the full mix of work a bay handles before recommending either configuration.

Our Recommendation for Mixed-Use Independent Shops

For most independent shops we work with in Iowa City, where oil changes are a steady revenue stream but not the only service offered, we lean toward recommending the compact in-bay configuration unless a shop can dedicate an entire bay purely to fluid service. The flexibility to use that same lift for other undercar work tends to pay off more over a year than the incremental speed gain of a drive-through setup used only part of the time.

That said, every shop’s layout, volume, and building constraints are different, and the right answer for one Iowa City shop isn’t automatically right for the next one. We do a full walkthrough and clearance check before making a final recommendation on any ALM lift installation, because guessing based on a floor plan alone leads to expensive mistakes once the equipment is already anchored to the slab.
