Why an Ammco Car Lift Rarely Fits an RV Bay As-Is

The classic ammco car lift was built decades ago for passenger cars and light trucks, and a lot of the used units still floating around Iowa shops carry that same DNA — meaning modest lifting height, standard-length arms, and a rated capacity well under what a loaded travel trailer or Class C motorhome needs. When a trailer shop owner in the lakes region reached out about a unit they’d been quoted secondhand, we walked through the tag capacity together and found it was rated closer to what you’d want for an oil pan gasket job on a pickup, not a 12,000-pound fifth wheel.

That doesn’t mean older lifts are worthless — plenty of shops keep one bay dedicated to lighter tow vehicles and cars while a separate heavy-duty 2-post or 4-post handles the RVs themselves. The mistake we see most is trying to make one lift do both jobs. If your shop’s mix is genuinely mixed, plan for two different pieces of equipment rather than compromising on capacity across the board.

Laying Out the Bay Before the Lift Arrives

Bay layout decides more about your daily workflow than the lift brand does. RVs and trailers need a straight, generous drive-in path — no dogleg turns, no low overhead ductwork, and enough width on both sides for a technician to move a creeper or roll a parts cart. We measure overhead clearance first because it’s the number that kills more RV lift installs than any other spec; a lift that raises a unit another 6 feet needs a ceiling and any HVAC or lighting to match.

We also ask shops to think about how vehicles exit the bay, not just enter it. If your technicians are pulling an oil pan gasket, replacing brake lines, or doing suspension work underneath, they need the lift positioned so tools, lighting, and drain pans are all within easy reach without walking around support columns. A 2-post configuration often gives RV and trailer techs the open-access advantage they need under a chassis, while a 4-post platform lift is better suited to shops that also want to park and store units between service visits.

First-Year Ownership: From Install Day to First Service Call

The first year with any new lift teaches a shop things no spec sheet mentions. One trailer service shop we installed for in the lakes region spent their first few months learning exactly how much floor space a technician needs to comfortably maneuver around a raised triple-axle trailer — more than they’d budgeted, as it turned out, which meant relocating a parts shelf during month two. That’s a normal adjustment, not a failure, and it’s easier to make early than after your whole shop layout has calcified around the lift’s original position.

We also recommend scheduling that first full inspection sooner than the standard annual interval — closer to 90 days in for a shop running a new lift daily under heavy RV and trailer loads. Cables stretch, anchor bolts settle, and hydraulic fluid levels shift during that early break-in period. Catching that early prevents the kind of slow-motion problems — a lift that creeps down overnight, or an uneven raise between posts — that are cheap to fix at three months and expensive to fix at three years.

Anchoring and Floor Prep for Heavy RV Loads

Concrete floor thickness and rebar placement matter more for RV shops than almost any other lift application, because you’re routinely putting several tons on four anchor points instead of spreading that weight across a full vehicle footprint like a car does on its tires. Before any 2-post or 4-post lift install for RV and trailer work, we run a floor evaluation — checking slab thickness, age, and any visible cracking near the planned footprint.

Shops that skip this step sometimes discover the hard way that their existing slab was poured for light-duty car traffic, not heavy trailer loads concentrated on four bolt patterns. Retrofitting a thicker pad section, or relocating the lift to a part of the shop with a stronger original pour, is far cheaper before installation than after a lift has already shifted. We’ve caught this issue on more than one Iowa Great Lakes region job simply by asking for the building’s original construction records before scheduling install day.

Choosing Capacity: Don’t Undersize for the Job in Front of You

It’s tempting to size a lift for your average customer vehicle rather than your heaviest one, but that math catches up with shops eventually. If your bay regularly sees loaded travel trailers, toy haulers, or dual-axle equipment trailers even occasionally, your ammco car lift or its modern replacement needs to be rated for that heaviest job, not the median one. We generally recommend building in at least 20 percent of headroom above your heaviest expected vehicle weight, which accounts for uneven loading, aftermarket accessories, and the reality that trailers rarely arrive perfectly balanced.

Maintenance Habits That Extend the Life of Your Lift

Whether you’re running a modern heavy-duty lift or an older ammco car lift that’s been in the shop for twenty years, the maintenance habits that keep it safe are largely the same: regular lubrication of moving parts, visual inspection of cables and hydraulic lines, and prompt attention to any unusual noise during operation. A quarterly visual check by shop staff, paired with an annual professional inspection, catches wear patterns early enough to schedule a repair on your timeline instead of during an emergency breakdown mid-service.
