An asymmetric car lift is the style most independent shops end up buying once they actually compare arm geometry side by side, and we get asked to explain the difference almost every week from our shop in Ames. We spent years wrenching on race cars and daily drivers alike before we started installing lifts full time, and the question is always the same: symmetric or asymmetric, and which one actually pays for itself? If you’re weighing a purchase for a shop anywhere in the Iowa Great Lakes region, this decision tree will get you to an answer instead of just more options.

We recently got a message almost identical to ones we see constantly: a shop owner asking point blank whether the arms on a quoted lift were symmetrical or asymmetrical, because the spec sheet didn’t make it obvious. It’s a fair question, and it’s the single most important spec on a two post lift after weight capacity. Symmetric arms center the vehicle over the columns, which is fine for framework and trailers but forces most cars into an awkward door-opening position. Asymmetric arms swing the front arms shorter and the rear arms longer, shifting the car’s center of gravity forward and away from the columns so the driver’s door clears the post and you can actually get in and out once it’s in the air.

Step One: What Are You Actually Lifting Every Day?

Start the decision tree with the vehicle mix, not the price tag. If your bay sees a steady rotation of sedans, crossovers, and half-ton pickups for oil changes and fluid service, an asymmetric car lift wins almost every time because the offset arm geometry puts the technician in a natural stance under the pan and filter instead of reaching around a post. We’ve watched techs shave real minutes off routine service work simply because the car sits rotated open toward the bay instead of centered and boxed in.

If you’re running a shop that pulls in a lot of full-size vans, flatbeds, or anything with a wide wheelbase and minimal front overhang, symmetric arms sometimes make more sense because there’s no door-swing problem to solve in the first place. But for the vast majority of general repair and quick-lube work across the Iowa Great Lakes region, where the daily mix skews toward personal vehicles, asymmetric geometry is the default answer, and it’s what we spec on the majority of quotes we write.

Step Two: Set a Real Budget Before You Look at Brands

Once you know your vehicle mix, set a number. Two post lifts with asymmetric arms span a wide range depending on capacity, drive-through clearance, and whether you want three-stage front arms with extra reach. Entry-level asymmetric units in the 9,000 to 10,000 lb class cover most passenger car and light truck work. Step up into 12,000 lb and heavier capacity if you’re servicing duallies or want headroom for future growth, since resale buyers almost always ask about capacity first.

Budget for the lift itself plus a pad for concrete work if your slab needs it, plus install. Don’t let a low sticker price on a bare lift fool you into skipping the anchor bolt and concrete inspection — undersized concrete is the single most common reason an asymmetric car lift gets flagged during a used-equipment inspection later, and it tanks resale value fast.

Step Three: Decide Between Two-Stage and Three-Stage Arms

This is where the phone calls we get usually stall out. Two-stage arms are shorter and less expensive, and they work fine in smaller bays. Three-stage front arms extend farther and are worth the upgrade if you’re servicing longer wheelbase trucks or if your bay dimensions mean you need extra reach to hit the factory lift points without repositioning the vehicle twice. We’ve seen shops in the Iowa Great Lakes region special-order three-stage arms specifically because their bay depth left almost no margin for error on longer trucks.

Some manufacturers list drive-through width specs side by side for symmetric versus asymmetric configurations on the same base lift — we’ve seen spec sheets where one config clears 96 inches and the other clears over 100 inches drive-through. That few inches matters if your bay is tight or if you’re planning to run two lifts in one bay eventually. Map your actual bay dimensions before ordering, not after.

Step Four: Think About Resale Before You Sign

Here’s the part most first-time lift buyers skip: resale and trade-in value. An asymmetric car lift with a recognized brand name, documented service history, and a clean anchor-bolt install holds value dramatically better than an off-brand unit with no paperwork. When we’ve appraised used lifts for trade-in, brand, arm configuration, and capacity rating are the three things buyers ask about before anything else — and asymmetric arm geometry is specifically requested by resale buyers because it’s the more versatile configuration for a general-service bay.

If you think there’s any chance you’ll sell the shop, relocate, or upgrade capacity in five to ten years, buy the configuration that the next owner will also want. That’s almost always asymmetric arms on a mid-capacity two post lift from a brand with parts support still in production.

Step Five: Match Ceiling Height and Bay Depth

No decision tree is complete without physically measuring your bay. Asymmetric car lift columns still need the same overhead clearance as any two post unit — measure from floor to the lowest overhead obstruction, not just to the ceiling, since ductwork, sprinkler heads, and lighting all eat into your usable height. Most standard two post lifts need roughly 12 feet of clearance for full rise; if you’re tight, ask about low-overhead-height column options before you fall in love with a spec sheet.

Bay depth matters just as much for asymmetric arms specifically, since the offset geometry needs a few extra inches of swing room on the driver’s side to clear the door fully. We measure this on every install we do in the Iowa Great Lakes region because it’s the single most common reason a lift gets returned or resold within the first year — someone bought the right lift for the wrong bay.

Step Six: Get the Install Right, Not Just the Lift

A correctly installed asymmetric car lift outperforms a poorly installed premium one every time. Anchor bolt torque, concrete thickness, and column plumb all affect how smoothly the arms swing and how long the lift lasts under daily oil-change and fluid-service traffic. We’ve re-anchored plenty of lifts that were structurally fine on paper but installed on marginal slab that eventually let a column walk out of plumb.

If you’re buying from out of state or from a big-box retailer, factor in installation cost and travel separately — a lift that ships flat-packed still needs a qualified crew to set columns, run the cable or hydraulic lines, and calibrate the arms. Step Seven: Plan Ahead for Trade-In Day

Even if selling is years away, document everything from day one. Keep the original invoice, capacity rating, and any service records on your asymmetric car lift in one folder. When trade-in day comes, that paperwork is worth real money to the next buyer, and it’s the difference between a fast sale and a lift that sits listed for months.
