We recently walked through a site survey for a builder near Decorah who runs a fleet of overlanding trucks through constant hub and bearing work, and the visit turned up three things that would have caused real problems if nobody had checked them first. Why Wheel Bearing Work Points People Toward an Asymmetric Lift

Wheel bearing service means pulling wheels, dropping calipers, and sometimes swinging a control arm or knuckle out of the way, and none of that is comfortable to do around a straight-arm symmetric lift. An asymmetric lift shifts the front arms further forward and angles them out, which opens up the door area and gives a technician room to work the front corners without climbing over the arm assembly. On an overlanding build with oversized tires, long-travel suspension, or aftermarket bumpers, that extra clearance matters even more, because the front arms need to reach around bigger components without fouling on frame rails or skid plates.

We’ve set up more than a few of these lifts specifically because a shop’s daily work is wheel bearings, hub assemblies, and brake service rather than general repair. If your bay sees a steady stream of trucks getting bearing packs, seal replacements, or full hub swaps, the door-swing advantage of an asymmetric configuration adds up over a year of use. It’s not a requirement for every shop, but for the use case described here, it’s usually the better fit.

The Site Survey: What We Actually Measure

Before we quote or schedule an asymmetric lift install, we walk the bay in person or work off dimensioned photos and a video call, because ceiling height, floor slab, and column spacing all decide what will actually fit and run safely. Ceiling height needs to clear the lift’s fully raised height plus the tallest vehicle you plan to service on it, and a lot of pole barns and older Iowa garages have less headroom than owners assume until we put a tape measure on it.

Floor slab is the next check. Two-post lifts anchor into concrete, and older Iowa slabs, especially in barns and shops converted from other uses, are sometimes thinner or more cracked than they look. On the northeast Iowa job that prompted this piece, the floor was fine, but the ceiling height was tighter than expected, which changed which lift model made sense.

A Recent Install Near Decorah: The Case Study

The builder we worked with runs several overland-prepped trucks and does most of his own wheel bearing and hub service between trips. He’d been working on jack stands for years and wanted a permanent asymmetric lift setup in a pole barn he’d converted into a shop. Our survey found adequate floor thickness but a ceiling roughly a foot lower than he’d guessed, which ruled out a couple of taller lift models he’d been eyeing online.

We specced a lift with a lower overall raised height that still cleared his tallest truck with room for a technician to stand underneath comfortably. The whole survey-to-install process took about three weeks from first phone call to a working lift, and it avoided what would have been an expensive mismatch if he’d ordered based on ceiling height guesses alone.

Arm Configuration: Asymmetric vs Symmetric for This Kind of Work

People ask us constantly whether they want asymmetric or symmetric arms, and honestly it depends on what you’re doing under the vehicle most often. Symmetric arms center the vehicle between the columns and work well for general lifting, alignment prep, and jobs where you’re not fighting for space at the front corners. An asymmetric lift, by contrast, pushes the front arms forward and out at an angle, which frees up the door and cowl area for exactly the kind of work wheel bearing service demands.

Anchoring, Power, and the Details People Skip

Site surveys aren’t just about clearance. We also check available power for the hydraulic power unit, since some lift models need dedicated circuits that older shop buildings weren”t wired for. We check door height and width for getting the lift components into the building in the first place, because a two-post lift’s columns and crossbeam are heavier and longer than most people picture, and a tight garage door has stopped more than one install before it started.

We also look at what’s already installed nearby. If you’ve got a tire changer, wheel balancer, or another lift in the same bay, spacing between equipment affects how comfortably an asymmetric lift’s arms swing without clipping something else. On the Decorah job, we adjusted the planned lift position by about two feet from where the customer originally wanted it, specifically to keep the arm swing clear of a workbench along the wall. Small adjustment, but it’s the kind of thing that only gets caught by looking at the actual space rather than a floor plan sketch.

What Happens If You Skip the Survey

We get calls fairly often from people who bought a lift online without a proper site survey and are now trying to make it work in a space that wasn’t measured correctly. Sometimes it’s fine. Sometimes the ceiling is too short, the slab needs reinforcement, or the arm swing on their asymmetric lift interferes with a support post nobody accounted for. Fixing those problems after delivery costs more than fixing them before you order, every time.

For overlanding builders specifically, this matters more because the vehicles are often taller, wider, and heavier than stock trucks, which shrinks your margin for error on ceiling height and lift capacity. We’d rather spend forty-five minutes on a video call or an hour walking a bay in person than have a customer discover a mismatch after a lift is already bolted to the floor. It’s a cheap step that prevents an expensive one.

Getting Your Iowa Shop Ready for Install Day

Once the survey is done and you’ve picked between asymmetric or symmetric arms, install day goes faster if the bay is cleared out, the floor is swept, and any nearby equipment is moved or protected. We typically need clear access to the anchor locations, a path to bring in lift components, and confirmation that power is ready if the model requires it. We also walk new owners through arm positioning and safe operation before we leave, because an asymmetric lift’s swing pattern takes a little getting used to if you’ve only run symmetric arms before.
