We get this question constantly from customers who are shopping lifts for the first time: are the arms symmetrical or asymmetrical? It’s not a trick question, and it’s not a minor detail either. Asymmetric lift placement means the front arms are shorter than the rear arms, shifting the vehicle’s balance point forward on the columns so the driver’s door swings open without clipping a post. A symmetric setup centers the vehicle evenly between both columns, which is simpler geometrically but eats up more door-swing room on both sides.

For a restoration hobbyist doing metal work, this decision affects more than convenience. You’re going to be in and out of the cab constantly, hauling sheet metal, welding equipment, and tools past the columns, and a poorly chosen placement can turn a two-car garage into an obstacle course. Before you even look at brochures, decide whether your garage layout favors asymmetric lift placement for easier door access or whether a symmetric configuration works fine because you’ve got wide-open space on both sides already. This single answer shapes everything else on this checklist.

Measure Your Garage Like You Mean It

Every site survey we run starts with a tape measure, not a sales pitch. Measure your ceiling height from the floor to the lowest overhead obstruction, including garage door tracks, light fixtures, and HVAC ductwork, because a two-post lift needs enough clearance for the vehicle plus the lift arms at full rise. Measure floor-to-floor width where the columns will sit, and measure the depth of your bay from the garage door to the back wall.

For a Marion restoration project, we walked the shop and found the ceiling clearance was fine but the column spacing the homeowner wanted would’ve put one post directly under a support beam. Asymmetric lift placement helped here too, because shifting the arm configuration let us nudge the column footprint a few inches without changing the vehicle’s centering on the pads. Check Your Floor Before You Check Your Wallet

A lift is only as good as the concrete underneath it. Two-post lifts need a minimum slab thickness, and that number varies by lift capacity and column base design, so don’t assume your existing garage floor qualifies just because it looks solid. We recommend a core sample or at minimum a visual inspection of the slab’s age, cracking, and any evidence of previous anchor holes before you commit to a purchase.

This matters even more when asymmetric lift placement is involved, because the load through the shorter front arm and longer rear arm isn’t distributed identically to a symmetric setup, and anchor bolts need to seat into solid, uncracked concrete to handle that load safely over years of use. Asymmetric lift placement can help or hurt here depending on your project. If you need extended arm reach to get around missing body panels or aftermarket brackets, the longer rear arms in an asymmetric configuration might give you the flexibility you need. But if your vehicle’s frame is compromised structurally, no arm configuration fixes that — you need a frame specialist before it ever touches a lift. We always ask what condition the vehicle is in before recommending a specific setup, because a restoration project is a different animal than a daily driver oil change.

Ask About Arm Reach and Column Height Options

Not all asymmetric configurations are created equal. Some lifts offer two-stage arms, and higher-end models offer three-stage front arms with extra extension for long-wheelbase trucks or vehicles with unusual frame geometry. If you’re restoring anything longer than a standard sedan, ask specifically what the front arm reach is at full extension and whether the rear arms can adapt to your vehicle’s frame contact points.

We’ve seen hobbyists get a lift installed only to discover the front arms couldn’t reach far enough forward to catch a frame rail on their specific vehicle without repositioning the entire vehicle multiple times per lift cycle. Asking about arm reach before purchase, and confirming it against your actual project vehicle’s dimensions rather than a generic sedan, prevents this. Column height matters too — taller columns give you more rise but need more ceiling clearance, so this ties directly back to the ceiling measurement from earlier in this checklist.

Get the Site Survey Done Before You Sign Anything
