A symmetrical lift has front and rear arms that swing out the same distance on both sides of the vehicle, splitting the car’s weight evenly front-to-back across the columns. An asymmetrical car lift shifts that balance: the front arms are shorter and swing out at a wider angle, while the rear arms are longer and swing out narrower, which lets the vehicle’s heavier end (usually the engine) sit closer to center while still giving you a clear door-opening path on both sides.

A baseplate design anchors straight to the slab and doesn’t require any overhead bracing, which makes it the more practical choice in a converted garage bay. It also tends to be more forgiving if you ever need to relocate the lift within the same building.

That said, if you’re operating out of a shop with taller ceilings and a concrete slab poured to commercial spec, an overhead configuration frees up floor space entirely and can be worth the extra install complexity. Maintenance Habits That Extend the Life of Your Lift

Daily-use lifts need a maintenance rhythm that a lot of independent techs skip until something breaks. We recommend checking hydraulic fluid levels monthly, greasing the arm pins and locking mechanisms weekly if you’re running multiple cycles a day, and doing a full visual inspection of the cylinder and hose fittings every few months. An asymmetrical car lift with worn arm pins will develop play that makes positioning vehicles harder over time, so catching that early keeps the whole system running the way it did on day one.
