Item 1: Know Your Real Weight Capacity Needs
Farm shops are deceptive when it comes to weight. People think of their daily driver, forget about the loaded pickup, the dually, or the tractor attachment they occasionally haul in, and end up undersized. For differential fluid service specifically, you’re often dealing with three-quarter and one-ton trucks that push close to 8,000-9,000 lbs loaded, even if the empty truck is lighter. Before you settle on an at home garage car lift, add a real buffer above your heaviest realistic vehicle rather than sizing exactly to it.
We’ve seen farm shop owners in southern Minnesota and across Iowa buy a 7,000 lb lift because that matched their truck’s curb weight, only to realize the lift is undersized the first time they load up a bed with feed or equipment before pulling it in for service. Item 2: Ask About Cylinder Seal Material and Rebuild Availability
This is the question that separates an informed buyer from someone who’ll be stuck in six years. Hydraulic cylinder seals wear out from cycling, heat, and contamination, and on a farm shop lift that also does differential fluid service, you’re dealing with grease, gear oil, and dust in the air more than a typical suburban garage. Ask upfront whether the manufacturer sells rebuild kits directly and whether they’re stocked or special order.

Differential fluid service doesn’t require the same lift configuration as full suspension or drivetrain removal work. A 2-post lift with open access underneath is often the better choice for diff service because you’re not fighting posts or runways to get a drain pan and torque wrench where you need them. A 4-post is better if you also want to store a second vehicle or do wheel alignment-adjacent work, but it adds cost and floor space requirements.
We ask every farm shop customer what percentage of their work is fluid service versus heavier teardown work, because that answer often changes our recommendation entirely. If diff service is 70% of what you’ll do on an at home garage car lift, we’ll usually steer you toward a 2-post with good arm reach rather than a 4-post that costs more and doesn’t actually serve that task better.
Item 4: Confirm Your Floor Meets Spec Before You Order
This is the item that kills more farm shop installs than any other. Most 2-post lifts need at least 4 inches of properly cured concrete, and older pole building slabs poured without that spec in mind can be thinner or under-reinforced. We always ask for concrete thickness and cure date before finalizing an order, because anchoring a lift into inadequate concrete is a safety problem, not a cosmetic one.
If you’re not sure what your slab specs are, core it or check the original pour records before you buy. It’s a lot cheaper to find out you need a reinforced pad now than to discover it after your at home garage car lift is sitting in the driveway waiting for a floor that isn’t ready. Item 5: Factor In Ceiling Height and Clearance
Pole buildings often have generous ceiling height, which is a real advantage for farm shops, but don’t assume it’s automatically enough. Measure from the floor to the lowest overhead obstruction, including lights, ductwork, and door tracks, not just the roofline. A 2-post lift needs enough clearance for the vehicle plus the lift arms at full extension, and a taller truck with a topper or ladder rack changes that math fast.

A lot of online lift sellers disappear after the truck leaves the warehouse. For a farm shop that depends on the lift being operational, that’s a real risk. Ask whether the seller offers phone support for calibration issues, whether they can source seal kits and cables later, and whether installation help is available if you’re not comfortable doing it yourself.
