Voltage and Phase: What Most Dealership Bays Actually Have

Most atlas 2 post car lift models used in dealership service bays run on a 220-volt single-phase motor, which is good news for smaller independent dealers in towns like Milford or Arnolds Park who don’t have three-phase service run to their building. Larger dealership groups with bigger facilities sometimes have three-phase power already in place from paint booths or larger compressors, and in those cases we can spec a three-phase motor instead, which tends to run a little smoother under constant daily cycling. Either way, this decision needs to happen before the lift order goes in, not after it shows up on the truck, because swapping a motor after delivery means downtime you didn’t plan for.

We always ask what else is on the same electrical panel. A dealership running two or three lifts off one panel, plus a tire changer, an AC machine, and shop lighting, can overload a panel that looked fine on paper. For a facility doing genuine daily maintenance volume, we recommend a dedicated circuit for each lift rather than sharing. It costs more upfront but it eliminates the nuisance trips that cost you a technician standing around waiting for the breaker to reset instead of turning a wrench.

Circuit Sizing and Breaker Amperage

A typical 220-volt single-phase atlas 2 post car lift motor draws somewhere in the range of 15 to 20 amps under load, which usually calls for a dedicated 30-amp breaker and appropriately sized wire run from the panel. Undersizing this circuit is the number one electrical mistake we see in the field, usually because someone reused an existing circuit that was sized for a compressor or a welder instead of a lift motor. The lift will often run fine on an undersized circuit for weeks or months before it starts nuisance-tripping under load, right when a technician is mid-lift with a vehicle in the air, which is not where you want an electrical surprise.

We also see a lot of older dealership buildings in the Iowa Great Lakes area with panels that are already near capacity from decades of added equipment. If that’s your situation, it’s worth having an electrician check total panel load before committing to lift placement. We’ve seen dealerships wire a lift with the same gauge they’d use for a 20-foot run in a home garage, only to find the motor struggles on longer lift cycles because it isn’t actually getting full voltage by the time it reaches the motor. Your electrician should calculate wire gauge based on actual run length, not just amperage on a spec sheet.

This becomes especially relevant when a dealership installs multiple lifts across a wide service floor, with some units much farther from the panel than others. We recommend documenting each lift’s run length separately during the planning phase, rather than assuming a single wire gauge works for every bay. It’s a small detail that prevents a slow, underpowered lift from becoming a daily frustration for your technicians.

Disconnect Switches and Daily Shutoff Practice

For a lift used in true daily maintenance rotation, we strongly recommend a local disconnect switch mounted near the lift itself, not just relying on the breaker panel across the shop. Technicians who are in and out of a bay dozens of times a day need a fast, visible way to de-energize the lift for lockout/tagout during service or troubleshooting. It’s also a code requirement in a lot of jurisdictions, and dealership service departments in particular tend to get inspected more closely than a private garage.

Beyond code compliance, a local disconnect is just good daily practice. If a technician needs to clear a jam, service a hydraulic line, or troubleshoot an electrical issue on the lift, they should be able to kill power at the unit without walking across the shop. Motor Amperage and Duty Cycle Under Heavy Daily Use

A dealership running an atlas 2 post car lift through eight, ten, or more cycles a day is putting real duty-cycle stress on the motor that a home garage user never will. This is where spec sheet numbers and real-world performance can diverge. We pay attention to motor duty cycle ratings, not just peak amperage, when recommending a configuration for high-volume dealership use. A motor rated for occasional use might technically lift the rated capacity, but it can overheat or wear out faster under back-to-back cycling all day long.

If your dealership is doing genuine daily maintenance volume across multiple bays, we’ll often recommend a slightly higher-capacity motor configuration than the bare minimum for your heaviest vehicle, specifically to give the motor some margin under continuous use. It’s a small upcharge relative to the cost of a motor replacement six months into ownership, and it keeps your service department moving instead of waiting on a lift that’s overheating by mid-afternoon.

Grounding, Surge Protection, and Iowa Weather Considerations

The Iowa Great Lakes region sees its share of summer storms and power fluctuations, and a dealership running multiple electrical bays is more exposed to that than a single-lift home setup. Proper grounding on your lift’s electrical circuit isn’t optional, and we recommend surge protection at the panel level for dealerships that have had issues with voltage spikes in the past. A damaged control board from a lightning-adjacent surge is an expensive and completely avoidable repair.
