Reading the Warning Signs Between Inspections

Between scheduled checks, there are signs that should send you under the lift immediately rather than waiting for the next monthly walk-around. If the carriage doesn’t rise evenly on both sides, if you hear a grinding or popping sound from the top of the columns, or if the safety locks aren’t engaging at the same height on each side, stop using the lift. These are classic cable stretch or fray symptoms on an Atlas 2-post lift, and they show up gradually before they show up catastrophically.

We also recommend keeping a simple log — date, cycle count if you track it, and any visual notes — taped inside the equipment room or posted near the lift. It sounds low-tech, but for a one or two person shop like the build our Marion customer runs, it’s the difference between remembering to check cables and forgetting for six months. A logbook also helps if you ever need warranty support, since manufacturers want to see maintenance history before honoring a cable or column claim. It takes thirty seconds per entry and it protects a piece of equipment that costs far more to replace than to maintain.

Setting Cable Replacement Intervals for Heavy-Use Shops

Cable replacement intervals aren’t one-size-fits-all, and shops running an Atlas 2-post lift for off-road builds cycle vehicles differently than a shop doing occasional brake jobs. Skid plates create a second wrinkle. Factory pick points assume a stock undercarriage, and once you bolt on steel armor, those points move or disappear.
