An EV specialty shop owner near the Quad Cities called us convinced his atlas 2-post lift’s cables were fine because “the lift still goes up and down smooth.” That’s the exact myth that gets EV shops in trouble. Electric vehicles are heavier than the gas cars these lifts were originally speced against decades ago, and that extra weight puts more strain on cables during the exact maneuver EV alignment work demands: slow, repeated raising and lowering while techs fine-tune camera targets and thrust angle. Myth #1: If the lift runs smooth, the cables are fine

This is the biggest misconception we hear on service calls. An atlas 2-post lift uses cables to keep both columns synchronized as the carriages travel up and down. A cable can be 60% frayed on the inside strands and still function perfectly smoothly right up until the moment it snaps. Smoothness is a function of the hydraulic system and pulley alignment, not cable integrity. You cannot feel wire rope fatigue through the control handle.

What you can do is a visual and physical inspection every 90 days if you’re running heavier EVs through the bay regularly. Look for broken strands poking out (birdcaging), rust bleeding through the cable jacket, and any flat spots where the cable has been pinched against a pulley. Run a gloved hand along the length — if the glove catches or snags, that’s a broken strand you might not see. Myth #2: EV weight doesn’t matter because the lift is rated higher than the vehicle

But rated capacity assumes evenly distributed static load, not the constant micro-adjustments of alignment work where weight shifts toward one end of the lift as a tech works front or rear suspension components. That uneven, repeated loading is harder on cables than a single static lift-and-hold. We’ve seen shops in western Illinois run heavy trucks and EVs on the same lift for years without adjusting inspection frequency, and that’s a mistake.

The fix isn’t a bigger lift necessarily — it’s more frequent cable inspection and replacement on a schedule tied to usage, not calendar age alone. If your atlas 2-post lift is doing multiple EV alignment jobs a week, we recommend inspection every 90 days and full cable replacement every 2-3 years regardless of how they look, simply because the loading pattern is more severe than a typical gas-car shop sees.

Myth #3: Cable replacement is a DIY five-minute job

Cables are tensioned as a matched set. It’s not that shop techs can’t learn it; it’s that getting it wrong on a lift holding a customer’s EV is a liability nobody wants.
