A heavy-duty truck shop owner in West Des Moines called us last winter with a quote in his hand and a question nobody had answered: what does this actually cost once it is standing in my bay? He had a number for the equipment. He had nothing for freight, nothing for unloading a pallet of columns off a semi in January, and nothing for the forklift he did not own. That gap between the sticker on an auto lift and the all-in delivered-and-running cost is where most shops get surprised, and it is usually thousands of dollars wide. We walked him through it line by line, the same way we do for every customer, and this article is that breakdown.

Line One: The Equipment Itself

Equipment is the number everybody shops, and it is the one that varies most by capacity. A 10,000 lb two-post for light trucks and passenger vehicles sits in the low four figures for entry-level imports and climbs into the mid four figures for a Rotary or Challenger column with a real warranty and parts availability in ten years. Move up to 15,000 or 18,000 lb and you are in the high four to low five figures. A true heavy-duty setup — mobile columns rated for a Class 8 tractor, or a 40,000 lb-plus four-post — is a five-figure conversation before anything else gets added.

For the West Des Moines shop, the daily work was maintenance on medium-duty box trucks and service vans with the occasional tandem axle. That mix pointed toward a set of four mobile columns rather than a fixed installation, because the flexibility to lift a straight truck one day and roll the columns out of the way the next was worth more than a permanent bay. Column sets cost more up front than a single two-post, but they eliminate most of the concrete work and they move with you if you lease the building. That last point convinced him. We tell shop owners to decide the work mix first and the auto lift second, because buying capacity you never use is the most expensive mistake in this category.

Line Two: Freight Is Not a Rounding Error

An auto lift ships on a flatbed or in a dry van depending on configuration, and it is heavy, long, and awkward. A two-post ships as two columns, an overhead beam or floor plate, arms, and a power unit — call it 1,800 to 2,500 lb across a couple of crates. A four-post with runways is heavier and longer. A set of four mobile columns can push past 4,000 lb. Freight from a coastal warehouse to central Iowa runs several hundred dollars on the light end and well over a thousand on heavy or oversized configurations.

What people miss is accessorial charges. Liftgate service, residential or limited-access delivery, appointment scheduling, redelivery after a missed window, and detention if the driver waits — every one of those is a separate line on the carrier invoice, and they add up faster than the base linehaul. We quote freight into our numbers so the shop knows the real figure, and when we deliver on our own truck out of Ames we skip most of the accessorial mess entirely. For anything within a couple hours of Des Moines, that is usually the cheapest and most predictable path. When a customer buys direct from a national seller and the pallet lands on a curb in West Des Moines with no liftgate, the rescue costs more than the shipping would have.

Line Three: Unloading Day and the Forklift You Do Not Own

A semi backs into your lot with a 2,200 lb crate on it and the driver’s job ends at the trailer edge. That is the moment shops get creative and people get hurt. We have seen a crated column slide off a tailgate onto a concrete apron, and we have seen a shop try to walk a crate down a set of 2x10s. Neither ends well, and a bent column is not a warranty claim.

You need a forklift with real capacity — 5,000 lb minimum for most configurations, more for heavy-duty crates — and forks long enough to get under a wide pallet without tipping it. If you do not have one, a daily rental in the Des Moines metro runs a few hundred dollars plus delivery, and you need someone certified to run it. Budget it. The alternative is a delivery with liftgate service, which handles lighter crates but not the heavy stuff. When we handle delivery and install as one job, we bring the equipment to move it, which is a line item on our quote but it is a known number rather than a scramble. Plan the unloading before the truck is scheduled: know where the crate lands, know the path from there to the bay, and make sure the overhead door clearance and the turning radius inside the shop actually work. Measure it. A twelve-foot column does not corner in a ten-foot aisle.

Line Four: Concrete Work and Site Prep

Fixed installations need concrete that passes spec, and in older West Des Moines industrial buildings that is a real question. Most two-post units want four to five inches of 3,000 PSI minimum, heavy-duty units want more, and anchor placement has to stay clear of control joints and slab edges. We hammer-test and core-sample when there is doubt, and if the slab does not make it, the fix is saw-cutting and pouring footing pads. Figure a day of work per pad plus materials and cure time — typically a week before you can anchor.

Mobile columns dodge most of this, which is one reason they made sense for the truck shop. But they still need a flat, sound floor with no significant slope, and they need a charging or power setup. Electrical is the other prep line: most units run 208-230V single phase, and if your panel does not have capacity you are paying an electrician for a subpanel or a new run. Get that quote early. We have had installs sit an extra two weeks because the electrical work was scheduled after the equipment arrived instead of before. Sequencing costs nothing if you do it right and costs real money if you do not. When we quote an auto lift project we ask about panel amperage and existing circuits in the first conversation for exactly this reason.

Line Five: Install Labor and Commissioning

Install is where the honest suppliers separate from the box movers. Setting a two-post properly means squaring the columns, drilling and setting anchors to torque spec, shimming to level within tolerance, plumbing and bleeding the hydraulics, wiring the power unit, cycling the locks, and running a loaded test. For a straightforward two-post on good concrete, that is most of a day for a two-person crew. Heavy-duty four-post and mobile column sets take longer, sometimes two days.

Install labor typically runs in the high three to low four figures depending on configuration and site conditions, and the number goes up if we are also doing concrete or coordinating electrical. What you get for it is a unit that meets the manufacturer’s install requirements, which is what keeps the warranty valid and what an insurance adjuster will ask about if anything ever goes wrong. Add the ALI-standard inspection at commissioning and you have documentation from day one. We also spend the last half hour of every install training the crew — lock engagement, emergency lowering, daily inspection points, and what a worn cable looks like before it becomes a failure. That training prevents more damage than any single component on the equipment. A shop that knows how to listen to their auto lift catches problems while they are still adjustments.

Line Six: The Costs That Show Up Later

Ownership cost is the line nobody puts on a quote. Hydraulic fluid changes, cable inspection and replacement, lock adjustment, cylinder seals, and the annual inspection all come due on a schedule. For a busy truck shop running the equipment forty times a day, cables are the consumable that matters most — they stretch, they fray at the sheaves, and they should be replaced in sets, not one at a time. Budget for a cable set every several years on a high-cycle unit and an annual inspection every year, no exceptions.

Parts availability is the hidden cost that bites hardest. We get calls from shops that bought a bargain import online and now cannot source a lock dog or a cylinder because the importer changed names. That equipment becomes scrap. Rotary and Challenger parts we stock or can get quickly; obscure brands we sometimes cannot get at all. When you are comparing two quotes and one is meaningfully cheaper, ask where the parts come from in year seven. A downed bay in West Des Moines costs a heavy-duty shop hundreds of dollars an hour in lost billable time, which makes a two-week parts wait far more expensive than the original savings. That is the whole argument for buying from someone who stocks parts and shows up.

Putting the Whole Number Together

For the West Des Moines truck shop, the all-in figure came out roughly a third above the bare equipment price once freight, unloading, electrical, install, and commissioning were included. That is a normal ratio and a useful planning rule: whatever the sticker says, budget thirty to forty percent more for everything else, and more than that if concrete work is involved. Shops that plan to that number are never unhappy. Shops that budget only the equipment price end up cutting corners on install, which is the one place you should never cut.
