A typical commercial two-post lift in the 9,000 to 10,000 lb class runs a motor around 3 horsepower, pulling roughly 21 amps at max load, spinning near 3,300 RPM. Home-garage lifts in the 7,000 lb range often come with a choice between a 115v 1 horsepower motor and an upgraded 230v 2 horsepower motor — the same physical lift column, but a meaningfully different motor housing and wiring gauge underneath.

For a family garage doing engine oil pan gasket work, where a car might sit elevated for an hour or more while you drop the pan and clean the mating surface, the motor doesn’t need to cycle constantly, but it does need to hold pressure reliably without drifting. We size motors based on your actual bay usage, not just the sticker capacity of the lift. A shop that’s replacing a failed unit — and we get calls describing a motor that simply won’t turn anymore, seized solid — usually finds the original motor was undersized for the duty cycle the shop was actually putting on it, not misused.

It costs a little more upfront but it’s cheaper than financing a motor twice in ten years.

Physical Dimensions That Affect Motor and Housing Placement

Family garages built decades ago often have lower ceiling heights and tighter column spacing than a shop built today, and that affects where the motor housing and power unit can physically sit. A standard power unit box holding the auto lift motor typically needs 18 to 24 inches of clearance beside the column for service access, and you’ll want at least that much room to pull the motor for inspection or replacement without disassembling the column itself.

We measure bay dimensions before recommending a specific lift model precisely because a motor that’s perfect on paper is useless if nobody can reach it to change a seal or swap a failed unit two years down the road. For older western Illinois garages with additions bolted onto additions, this is often the deciding factor between two otherwise similar lift models.

Maintenance That Extends Motor Life in a High-Use Family Shop

A family shop running one or two lifts constantly for gasket work, brake jobs, and general repair puts more cumulative cycles on a motor than a dealership running six lifts lightly. We recommend checking hydraulic fluid level and condition monthly, listening for any change in motor sound — a new hum, a delay before it engages, unusual heat at the housing — and having a technician inspect the motor and pump seals annually rather than waiting for a failure.

When to Repair vs. Replace an Auto Lift Motor

Not every motor problem means a full replacement. Sometimes it’s a contactor, a capacitor, or a wiring issue that mimics motor failure. But if you’re smelling burning insulation, hearing grinding or seizing, or the motor won’t turn at all even with power confirmed, you’re looking at replacement, not repair.
