When an auto lift motor burns up on a Friday afternoon, the last thing a body shop foreman wants is a lecture on hydraulic theory — they want a straight answer on whether to buy used or new, and how fast it can be in a lift arm. We’ve had that exact call from shops around the Quad Cities more times than we can count: a lift was running fine, someone noticed it getting hot, and by the next morning it was humming, smoking, and dead. This is a straightforward buyer’s guide to help you decide, without the runaround.

How an Auto Lift Motor Actually Fails

Almost every failed auto lift motor we inspect follows the same pattern: it runs hot for a while, someone notices, and then it either seizes or the windings short out. We had a shop describe it perfectly — the lift had been acted on the day before with some troubleshooting, the motor was noted as running hot, and it still lifted a vehicle a few feet before everyone went home. The next day, it made a loud hum, smoked within ten seconds, and kept smoldering even after the power was cut. That’s a classic sign of a shorted winding or a seized rotor being forced by the starting circuit.

Heat is the enemy of any hydraulic pump motor, and once you smell hot insulation or see smoke, the motor is done — there’s no rebuilding your way out of that safely. If you catch the early warning signs, a hot motor housing, a hesitant start, a new hum under load, you can sometimes swap it before it fails completely and takes out a contactor or capacitor with it. That’s the window where the used-vs-new decision actually starts, because at that point you still have options instead of an emergency.

The Case for Buying Used

A used auto lift motor can make sense if your lift is older, the exact OEM part is discontinued, and you’re trying to keep a shop running on a tight budget for one more season. We’ve sourced take-off motors for shops that just needed to get a lift back in service for storage duty or light-use bays where the motor isn’t cycling all day. Used units are cheaper up front, and if you can verify the horsepower, voltage, and RPM match your lift’s pump assembly, they’ll physically work.

The risk is real, though. A used motor has unknown run-hours, unknown wear on the bearings, and no warranty if it fails in week two. We generally don’t recommend used motors for a shop’s primary lift bay, the one doing brake jobs and alignments five days a week, because the labor cost to pull and replace a motor twice in a year erases any savings. Used makes the most sense for backup lifts, seasonal storage lifts, or situations where you genuinely cannot get a new unit before a deadline. Even then, ask for the amp draw and RPM rating before you buy — a mismatched motor will overheat again, and you’ll be right back where you started.

The Case for Buying New

New is almost always the right call for any lift doing daily commercial work. A new motor comes correctly rated for your power unit — matched horsepower, matched voltage, matched RPM and max amp draw — and it carries a warranty that a used part simply can’t. When a 9,000 lb two-post lift’s original motor lets go, replacing it with a new 3-horsepower unit rated around 3,300 RPM and roughly 21 amps continuous draw, mid-40s peak, restores the lift to factory-spec performance instead of a compromise.

New motors also solve the voltage question up front. If you’re speccing a home storage lift or a lighter-duty unit, you’ll often choose between a standard 115v single-horsepower motor and an upgraded 230v two-horsepower option — and getting that decision right at time of purchase avoids having to source a whole new auto lift motor a year later because the original was underpowered for your use. New motors ship with correct mounting and shaft configuration for your specific pump, which eliminates the guesswork that comes with used take-offs pulled from a different lift generation.

Matching the Motor to Your Lift’s Actual Duty Cycle

Duty cycle matters more than most buyers realize when picking an auto lift motor. A lift that cycles once or twice a day for seasonal vehicle storage puts far less stress on a motor than a shop bay running ten to fifteen lift cycles daily. If your Quad Cities shop is running two-post lifts through a full workday, undersizing the motor to save money almost guarantees a repeat failure within a year or two, because the motor never gets a chance to cool between cycles.

On the flip side, if the lift is mostly holding vehicles up for storage or slow-paced restoration work, a lower duty-cycle motor can be perfectly adequate and cheaper. Before you buy either used or new, get honest about how many times a day that lift actually runs. We ask every caller this question because it changes the recommendation — a motor that’s fine for a hobbyist garage will cook itself in a high-volume shop, and a heavy-duty commercial motor is overkill money for a lift that runs twice a week.

Warranty, Lead Time, and Why That Changes the Math

Warranty coverage is one of the biggest differences between used and new, and it’s often underweighted in the decision. A new auto lift motor typically comes with manufacturer warranty coverage against defects, so if it fails within the covered window, you’re not out the replacement cost twice. Used motors, by contrast, are sold as-is nearly every time — there’s no recourse if it fails the week after install.

Lead time is the other factor shops underestimate. If your lift is down and costing you bay revenue every day, waiting a week or two for a special-order used unit from a salvage yard can cost more in lost labor hours than just paying for new and having it shipped from stock. We keep common motor specs in inventory precisely because shops can’t afford unplanned downtime, and matching the right amperage and RPM the first time means you’re not troubleshooting a mismatch on top of the original failure.

Diagnosing Before You Replace

Not every lift problem that looks like a dead auto lift motor actually is one. Before you order a replacement, check the obvious things: is the contactor engaging, is there voltage at the motor leads, is the capacitor swollen or leaking, and is the pump itself seized rather than the motor. We’ve seen cases where a lift wouldn’t turn at all, and the motor itself tested fine — the real culprit was a seized pump or a bad start capacitor pulling the motor into a stall condition that mimicked total failure.

If you do confirm the motor is dead, a burning smell, visible smoke, a locked shaft, or a motor that hums but won’t spin, don’t try to power-cycle it repeatedly hoping it clears. Repeated attempts to start a shorted motor can damage the contactor, the wiring, or trip breakers unnecessarily. Isolate the circuit, document what you’re seeing including any smoke or smell, and get the serial number and lift model ready before you call for a replacement quote — it speeds up getting the correct motor the first time.

What to Have Ready When You Call for a Replacement

Whether you land on used or new, the ordering process goes faster when you show up with the right information. Get the lift’s serial number, the model number, and if possible the existing motor’s nameplate data: horsepower, voltage, RPM, and amp draw. A 7,000 lb lift and a 9,000 lb lift can use different motor specs even from the same manufacturer, so guessing by lift capacity alone isn’t reliable.

We also ask shops to note whether the lift is single-phase or three-phase power, since that changes which auto lift motor will actually bolt up and wire correctly. If you’re upgrading voltage at the same time, say from a 115v single-horsepower setup to a 230v two-horsepower motor, confirm your shop’s electrical service can support it before the part ships, so you’re not stuck with a motor and no outlet to run it on. Having this ready turns a multi-day back-and-forth into a same-day quote.
