The Two Configurations on the Table
Configuration A was a 10,000 lb asymmetric two-post — specifically a Rotary SPO10 class unit with a clearfloor overhead beam. Configuration B was a 12,000 lb four-post drive-on with a rolling jack bridge and a slip-plate alignment provision. Both fit his bay. Both handle the vehicle mix that rolls through a Sioux City general repair shop: sedans, crossovers, half-ton pickups, the occasional dually and the occasional heavy EV. From a pure capability standpoint neither one is wrong, which is exactly what makes the decision hard and exactly why so many shop owners default to whatever the last guy installed.
The two-post is the classic inspection and repair tool. Wheels hang free, the undercarriage is completely open, suspension and exhaust and brake lines are all reachable without crawling. The four-post is the classic alignment and heavy-vehicle tool: drive on, no arm positioning, no pad placement anxiety, faster in and out, and rock-solid under a loaded truck. Where they diverge sharply is in setup time per vehicle, in what kind of work they enable, and in what a buyer will pay for the used equipment years later. We priced both. Configuration A landed in the mid-single-thousands installed. Configuration B, with the jack bridge and alignment package, landed roughly sixty to eighty percent higher. That gap is where the resale conversation begins.
Throughput Math for Annual State Inspections
For an inspection-heavy shop, seconds per vehicle multiply fast. On a two-post, a technician spends roughly 45 to 90 seconds positioning arms and setting pads, depending on how familiar he is with the vehicle’s lift points. On a four-post drive-on, that time is essentially zero — he drives on, chocks, and raises. Over fourteen inspections a day, five days a week, the four-post saves something like fifteen to twenty hours of labor a year. That is real money.
But the two-post gives back time elsewhere. Inspections that require wheels-free checks — ball joints, tie rod ends, wheel bearings, brake wear on all four corners — are dramatically faster with the wheels hanging. On a four-post the technician has to deploy the rolling jack, lift the axle, and then work around the runways. In practice, a shop doing thorough inspections with suspension checks nets out roughly even, with the two-post slightly ahead on anything that requires wheel removal and the four-post ahead on quick visual and exhaust inspections. For the Sioux City shop, whose inspection protocol required a wheels-free steering and suspension check on every vehicle, the two-post was the throughput winner by a modest margin. Where the four-post pulled ahead was on the heavy pickups that came in for the same inspection — a loaded three-quarter-ton on a two-post takes careful pad placement, and on a drive-on it takes none. Bay Geometry, Ceiling Height, and Concrete Requirements
Physical fit ruled out a lot of theoretical debate. A 10,000 lb two-post needs about 12 feet of width between columns plus working room, and a clearfloor overhead model needs roughly 12 feet of ceiling height for the crossbeam — 11 feet minimum on some low-ceiling variants. The four-post needed about 9 feet of width but 20 feet of length including ramps, and it could live under a 10-foot ceiling if the shop only lifted cars, though at that height a full-size truck cannot go all the way up.
Concrete is where the two options separate hard. A two-post concentrates enormous overturning force into a small anchor footprint. Manufacturers typically require 4 to 6 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum, cured 28 days, with no expansion joints or cracks within a foot of the anchor pattern. We core-test before installing a two-post in any building we have not worked in. If the slab does not pass, the fix is cutting out and pouring dedicated pads — a real expense that surprises people. The four-post is far more forgiving because the load is spread across four columns with no significant overturning moment; many models do not require anchoring at all. In an older Sioux City building with a patchwork slab, that difference can swing the decision entirely, and it is the first thing we check when someone asks us to quote an auto lift for a shop we have not seen.
What Each Auto Lift Configuration Costs to Own Over Ten Years
Purchase price is the smallest part of the picture. Over a decade, a two-post in daily commercial service will need arm restraint gear replacement, lock pawl service, possibly a cylinder reseal, and eventually equalization cable or chain replacement. Budget a modest annual figure for parts and an annual ALI inspection. A four-post in the same duty cycle needs cable replacement — typically every five to eight years in a busy shop and that is a several-hundred-dollar parts job plus labor — sheave inspection, and lock ladder service. Cables are the four-post’s recurring cost, and they are non-negotiable.
Where the two-post wins on cost of ownership is parts simplicity and availability. There are fewer wear items, they are cheaper, and every distributor in the country stocks them. Where the four-post wins is downtime — a four-post rarely goes fully out of service, while a two-post with a bad lock or a torn arm restraint has to be tagged out immediately. For a shop running annual inspections on a schedule with customers waiting, unplanned downtime on a bay is more expensive than the parts. Resale Value: Which One Holds Its Money
This is where the comparison got interesting, and it is the reason he called us in the first place. In the upper Midwest used equipment market, a well-maintained 10,000 lb asymmetric two-post from a tier-one brand typically retains somewhere in the range of 40 to 55 percent of its original installed cost after eight to ten years, assuming it has documented annual inspections and no structural damage. Demand is broad — every general repair shop, every dealership, every serious home garage wants one. Liquidity is high, and a used unit from a recognizable brand sells locally in days.
A four-post is a different market. Storage-grade four-posts hold value well because home-garage buyers want them and they are easy to move on casters. But a commercial-grade four-post with an alignment package is a narrower sale — the buyer pool is alignment shops and dealerships, and the unit is heavy, awkward to relocate, and often integrated into a specific bay layout. Retention tends to run 30 to 45 percent, with longer time-on-market. There is also a brand effect that people underestimate. A Rotary or Challenger unit with an intact serial plate and available parts documentation sells for meaningfully more than an off-brand unit of identical capacity, because a buyer can call somebody and get a cable set next week. When someone asks us which auto lift protects their capital, the honest answer is: buy a mainstream brand, keep the paperwork, and get the annual inspection done. Those three things move resale more than the configuration does.
The Documentation Habit That Adds Real Dollars
We have watched two functionally identical machines sell for wildly different money because one had a folder and one did not. The folder matters. Keep the original installation paperwork, the anchor torque record, every ALI annual inspection certificate, receipts for any cable or lock service, and the serial plate photo. When a buyer’s installer evaluates used equipment, that folder is the difference between a confident offer and a lowball hedged against unknown history.
The same habit protects you while you own the equipment. A logged inspection history is what your insurance carrier wants to see after an incident, and it is what an OSHA or state inspector will ask about. It also catches problems early — the cable that shows two broken strands this year is a scheduled replacement next year instead of an emergency. For the Sioux City shop, we set up a simple routine: a laminated daily visual checklist at the bay, a quarterly owner walkaround covering locks, cables, anchors, and fluid, and an annual certified inspection that we schedule as part of our western Iowa route. That is the cheapest return available on any piece of shop equipment, and almost nobody does it consistently.

The deciding factors were the wheels-free inspection requirement, the lower installed cost, the stronger used-market retention, and the fact that his existing three bays were already two-post, so his technicians had zero learning curve and his arm pad and adapter inventory carried over. Consistency across bays is worth more than most owners account for.
That said, we would have recommended the four-post without hesitation in a different set of circumstances. If his slab had failed the core test, if he were doing alignments in-house, if his vehicle mix skewed heavily toward loaded three-quarter-ton and one-ton trucks, or if he wanted the option to store vehicles overnight vertically, the drive-on would have been the right call. There is no universally correct auto lift — there is only the one that matches your slab, your ceiling, your work mix, and your exit plan.
