A circle-track crew chief across the river in western Illinois called us last spring with a problem most people never think about until it is too late: he had outgrown the auto lift he bought four years earlier and wanted to know what it was worth on trade. His team pulls transmissions constantly during the season, sometimes two in a weekend, and the entry-level unit he started with had become the bottleneck in his whole program. That conversation turned into a longer discussion about how much of your original spend you actually get back, which brands hold value in the used market, and how to buy the first time so you never have to eat that loss. Start With Budget, But Budget Over Ten Years
The first branch of the decision tree is money, and almost everyone gets this branch wrong by looking at the sticker instead of the ten-year cost. A cheap import two-post might land two to three thousand dollars under a comparable Rotary SPO12, and on the day you sign the order that feels like a win. But the cheap unit typically shows up with thinner columns, a lower-grade power unit, cables that stretch faster, and a parts pipeline that dries up when the importer changes suppliers. Three years later you cannot get a carriage slide block, and a machine you paid real money for is a paperweight you have to pay somebody to haul out.
We tell customers to divide the purchase price by the number of years they realistically expect to own the equipment, then add expected parts and service. Under that math, the premium brands almost always win. A well-kept Rotary or Challenger column lift routinely runs fifteen to twenty-five years in a busy shop, and it still has real trade value at the end. The budget import is worth scrap plus whatever a hobbyist will pay for the arms. When you frame the decision this way, the crew chief in western Illinois stopped asking what he could afford this month and started asking what he wanted to still be running in 2040.
What Actually Drives Auto Lift Resale Value
Resale on this equipment is not mysterious once you have bought and sold enough of it. Four things move the number. Brand is first: Rotary and Challenger hold value because parts remain available and because any competent installer in the Midwest knows how to service them. Second is documented inspection history. A unit with annual ALI inspection records commands noticeably more than an identical machine with no paperwork, because the buyer is not gambling on hidden cable or cylinder damage. Third is capacity and configuration relative to what the market wants right now, and right now the market wants 12,000 lb and up with tall columns. Fourth is condition of the wear items: cables, arm restraints, pads, and the hydraulic cylinder.
What surprises people is how little cosmetics matter. Faded paint and scuffed columns knock a few hundred off at most. A cracked baseplate weld or a cylinder that weeps takes thousands off, or kills the sale entirely. We have bought back equipment where the owner spent a weekend repainting when he should have spent a Saturday replacing cables and getting an inspection on file. If you plan to sell within five years, keep the service log, replace cables on schedule, and keep the original anchor and installation documentation in a folder. That folder is worth more than the paint.
The Second Branch: Capacity for Transmission Work
Once budget is settled, capacity is the next fork. For a race team doing transmission service on late-model trucks and tow rigs, 10,000 lb is the floor and 12,000 lb is the honest answer. Crew chiefs habitually underestimate what they will roll into the bay. A dually pickup pulling an enclosed trailer, a shop truck loaded with tools, an occasional customer vehicle for a sponsor — all of that adds up fast, and running an undersized machine at the edge of rating every day is how you end up replacing cylinders and cables early. Every early failure you cause knocks value off the trade later.
Capacity also interacts with resale directly. When we take an auto lift on trade, 10,000 lb clearsprice units are common and command modest money because supply is high. A 12,000 or 15,000 lb unit with tall columns is scarcer and sells within days of us listing it. So the extra spend up front buys you both operating headroom and a stronger exit. For transmission work specifically, we also push people toward a clearfloor design rather than an overhead style, because you want to run a transmission jack under the vehicle without an overhead beam limiting how tall the truck can go. That single configuration choice changes how usable the bay is for the next twenty years.
Ceiling Height, Bay Depth, and the Concrete Underneath
The third branch is the building, and this is where a lot of good plans die. Most pole buildings and shop additions we see in western Illinois and eastern Iowa run twelve to sixteen foot sidewalls. Twelve feet will take a standard-column two-post but you lose real lifting height once a full-size truck is on the arms. Fourteen feet is comfortable. Sixteen lets you run tall columns and get a dually up where a crew chief can actually stand under it with a transmission jack instead of crouching. If you are still in the framing stage, spend the money on height. You cannot add it later without a general contractor.
Concrete matters just as much. For a two-post in the 10,000 to 15,000 lb range we want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and we would rather see six inches at 4,000 PSI, cured at least a month. Thin slabs, control joints running right under a column, and old barn floors with rubble fill are all things we have had to core-test before we would set anchors. If the slab is not right we cut it out and pour a proper pad. It costs a day and it protects the equipment, your crew, and the value of the machine when you go to sell it.
Power, Plumbing, and the Question Everyone Asks
The single most common question that hits our inbox is whether you need 220 volt service. The short answer for most two-post equipment is yes, or at least you want it. Standard power units come wired for single-phase 208 to 230 volt on a dedicated 20 to 30 amp circuit, and that is what we recommend. Some manufacturers offer 110 volt options on lighter-duty models, and they do work, but the motor draws hard on startup, cycle times get slower, and you are more likely to nuisance-trip a breaker when the shop compressor kicks on at the same time. For a race shop running the equipment a dozen times a day, 220 is the right call.
Three-phase is a separate conversation. If you already have three-phase service in the building, order the power unit that way and you get a smoother, cooler-running motor. If you do not have it, do not add it just for one auto lift — the utility cost rarely makes sense. Have your electrician run the dedicated circuit and a junction box positioned at the column before the install crew arrives. Two-Post Versus Four-Post When Storage Is Part of the Plan
Race teams almost always have a storage problem alongside a service problem. That pushes some buyers toward a four-post, and it is worth thinking through honestly. A four-post drive-on is the better storage machine, full stop — park a car up top, park another underneath, and you have doubled your floor. It is also easier on the concrete because it does not rely on anchor pull-out the way a two-post does, and rolling jacks let you get wheels free when you need to. Four-post units hold resale value well for exactly this reason: the home and hobby market wants them badly.
But for transmission service, a two-post wins. Open access underneath, nothing in the way of a transmission jack, and no runways blocking the pan or crossmember. Our recommendation for a shop that has the square footage is one of each: a two-post in the working bay and a four-post along the wall for storage and alignment-style work. How We Handle Trade-Ins and What to Expect
When somebody calls us about trading up, the first thing we ask for is photos of the data plate, the columns at floor level, the cables, and the power unit. From that we can usually give a realistic range within a day. We are straightforward about it: a decade-old Rotary with good bones and clean inspection paperwork carries meaningful trade credit toward a new unit. An unbranded import with no serial documentation is worth removal cost at best, and sometimes we quote it as a disposal job rather than a trade. Nobody enjoys hearing that, but it is better than pretending otherwise and wasting your time.
The removal itself matters too. We disconnect, drain the hydraulics, break the anchors loose, patch the holes, and haul the old machine out on the same trip we deliver the new one. That is one shutdown instead of two, which for a race shop mid-season is the whole ballgame.
