We spent a morning last spring at a tire-and-alignment shop in northeast Iowa doing exactly that kind of walkthrough — four columns, three different manufacturers, two decades of accumulated service history, and an owner who mostly wanted to know whether his oldest unit was still safe to put a loaded three-quarter-ton pickup on. That walkthrough is the model for this article. We are going to trace the equipment from the day the brand stamped its serial tag through the parts pipeline that keeps it running, because safety and parts availability are the same conversation whether you want them to be or not.

Why Brand History Matters Before You Touch a Single Bolt

The first question we ask on any safety walkthrough is not “how old is it” but “who owns the brand now.” That sounds like trivia. It is not. The two-post and four-post market has consolidated hard over the last thirty years, and the outcome for a shop owner is simple: some names still have a living engineering department and a warehouse full of legacy parts, and some names exist only as a decal on a column that nobody supports. Rotary has been building in Madison, Indiana since the 1920s and still publishes parts breakdowns for units older than most technicians on the floor. Challenger has a similar depth on the commercial side, particularly in the PKS-style heavy configurations. When we find one of those tags, the walkthrough is straightforward — we can order everything.

Then there are the units that came off a pallet from a name that changed hands three times. At the northeast Iowa shop, the oldest column was one of those. The lock ladder had a proprietary tooth spacing, the carriage sheave used a shoulder bolt nobody stocks, and the original manufacturer had been absorbed and discontinued. That does not automatically mean the equipment is unsafe. It means the risk profile changed, because a lift you cannot get correct parts for is a lift that gets repaired with something approximate — and approximate is how people get hurt. Brand history tells us whether a repair path exists before we start writing down what needs replacing.

Reading the Data Plate and Building the File

The data plate is the single most valuable thing on the equipment and the single most neglected. Every walkthrough starts by finding it, cleaning it, and photographing it. On most two-post columns it lives on the inside face of the power-side column near the top, sometimes behind the wiring cover. Four-post units often carry it on the base of the powerside post or on the cross-tube. What we want is the model number, the serial number, the rated capacity, and the manufacture date. That combination unlocks the correct parts diagram, the correct lifting-point recommendations, and the correct cable length — which matters enormously, because a cable that is two inches off the spec length will never equalize properly no matter how many times you adjust it.

Once we have the plate, we build a file. Physical folder in the office, photos on the phone, whatever the shop will actually maintain. Into that file goes the annual inspection record, every parts invoice, the date of the last cable replacement, and the original installation and anchor torque record if it still exists. The tire shop we worked with had none of this, which is normal. We started the file that morning with photos of all four data plates, and by the end of the visit the owner could tell me the capacity and age of each unit without walking out to look. That is not paperwork for its own sake. When an insurance adjuster or an ANSI/ALI inspector asks, the file is the difference between a five-minute conversation and a shutdown.

The Daily and Weekly Checks That Actually Catch Failures

Most published inspection checklists are too long to survive contact with a busy Monday. So we teach a short one that catches the failures we actually see. Daily, before the first vehicle: eyeball the arm restraint gears and make sure they engage with a positive click when you swing an arm, look at the cables where they exit the carriage for broken strands or birdcaging, and listen for the locks clacking through their travel on the way up. If the locks go quiet on one column, stop. That is the failure that hurts people. It usually means a lock cable stretched, a spring broke, or somebody adjusted a lock release rod out of spec during an unrelated repair.

Weekly, add three things. Check the hydraulic fluid level with the carriages fully down, because a low reservoir is how you get air in the system and a jerky descent. Wipe the columns and look for fluid tracks that indicate a weeping cylinder packing or a leaking hose fitting. And put a wrench on two or three anchor bolts to confirm they are still at spec torque — concrete relaxes, and in an unheated Iowa shop with freeze-thaw cycles it relaxes faster than people expect. At the northeast Iowa shop we found four anchors on one column that had backed off noticeably. Ten minutes with a torque wrench fixed a condition that had been quietly getting worse for a couple of years. Oil Changes and Fluid Service: The Duty Cycle Nobody Accounts For

The northeast Iowa shop we walked lives on tires and alignments, but like almost every shop in the state, it pays the bills between those jobs with oil changes and fluid service. That is a specific duty cycle and it wears equipment in a specific way. A lift used for alignment work goes up once, sits for forty-five minutes, and comes down. A lift used for oil changes cycles eight, ten, fourteen times a day, mostly to knee height. Every one of those cycles is a full pull on the cables, a full stroke on the cylinder packing, and another pass over the lock ladder teeth. The manufacturer rated the equipment for a service life in cycles, not in years, and the express-lube bay burns through that budget three times faster than the alignment bay next to it.

What that means practically: if you have a dedicated fluid-service bay, treat it as your highest-priority inspection target and plan on cables at the short end of the replacement interval rather than the long end. We also push shops doing high-volume oil work toward configurations that suit the job — a mid-rise scissor or a well-placed four-post gets a drain plug and a filter within easy reach without asking the technician to run a two-post all the way to full height fourteen times before lunch. Cutting travel distance cuts wear and cuts labor minutes at the same time. On the two-post units that do carry fluid work, we set the lock stop the tech actually uses and make sure the arms are swung to the correct lifting points every time, not just parked where they landed.

Cables, Locks, and Cylinders: Where the Money Goes

After a decade of walkthroughs, the wear-parts list is remarkably consistent. Equalizer cables are number one. They stretch, they fray at the sheave, and on a chain-drive design the chains do the same thing. Lock components are number two — cables, springs, and the release linkage. Cylinder seals are number three, and they show up as a carriage that drifts down overnight or a lift that gets slower to rise as the season gets colder. Arm restraint gears and pins are number four, and they are the cheapest thing on the list and the one most likely to be ignored until an arm swings under load.

Here is where the parts pipeline argument closes the loop with the safety argument. All four of those items are stocked, cross-referenced, and shippable if the brand is supported. Cables in particular need to be exact-length assemblies with the correct end fittings; we keep the common lengths on the shelf in Ames and can fabricate or source the odd ones. For seals, we would rather send a complete kit for the specific cylinder bore than have somebody guess at an O-ring from a bin. When a customer sends us a data plate photo through the parts lookup, we are matching against the manufacturer’s own breakdown, not eyeballing it. That is the whole reason we stock parts as well as install equipment — the shop that can get the right part on Thursday does not run a compromised auto lift through the weekend.

What a Safety-First Auto Lift Walkthrough Actually Looks Like

A real walkthrough takes about forty minutes per unit and follows the same order every time. We start unloaded and at rest: data plate, capacity label, ALI certification label if present, operating instructions and safety decals, and the condition of the surrounding floor. Cracked or spalled concrete around an anchor is a red flag that outranks everything else on the list, because the strongest column in the world is only as good as the slab holding it. Then we go hands-on with the anchors, the base welds, the column plumb, and the shims. A column out of plumb by more than the manufacturer’s tolerance loads the carriage rollers unevenly and eats slide blocks.

Then we cycle it. Empty first, listening for lock engagement on every step, watching both carriages for synchronization, and checking that the descent is smooth rather than staged. Then loaded, with a vehicle at a realistic weight, and we watch for drift over ten minutes on the locks and again on hydraulic hold. We finish with the electrical: motor mounting, cord condition, disconnect, and whether the control is a proper momentary-contact setup that stops when the operator lets go. At the end of every auto lift walkthrough, the shop gets a written list sorted into three buckets — stop using it now, fix within thirty days, and monitor. Getting the Right Equipment and Keeping It Supported in Iowa

The northeast Iowa shop ended up replacing one column pair and keeping three. That is a typical outcome. We do not walk into a bay looking for a sale — a well-maintained twenty-year-old Rotary with available parts is a better asset than a new import nobody can support in five years, and we will say so. When replacement is the right call, we spec toward what the shop actually does. Tire and alignment work wants a two-post with good drive-through clearance or a proper alignment-rack four-post. Fluid service wants low-cycle-count access. Heavy-duty truck work wants mobile columns or a properly engineered high-capacity setup rather than an overloaded 12,000 lb unit that gets asked to do 16,000.

The part that matters after the install is the pipeline.
