A municipal fleet manager in southern Minnesota called us last spring because his crew had stopped using the middle bay entirely. The auto lift in that bay would creep down about two inches over a lunch break, and the shop foreman — correctly — told his techs not to get under it. They were running differential fluid service on a rotation of plow trucks and one-ton pickups, which means a lot of time spent directly beneath a raised vehicle with a drain pan and a fill pump. Creep is not a nuisance in that situation, it is a hazard. We drove down, put the unit through a full inspection, and walked the crew through what a cylinder seal failure actually looks like before it gets dangerous. This is that walkthrough.

Why Creep Almost Always Means Seals, Not Pumps

When a shop tells us their lift drifts down, the first guess in the bay is usually the power unit. It rarely is. A hydraulic power unit either builds pressure or it does not — it is not a good candidate for a slow, steady, quarter-inch-per-minute descent. What causes that pattern is fluid escaping past a barrier it should not cross, and there are only three realistic places for that: the cylinder piston seal, the velocity fuse or check valve in the base, or a line fitting. Two of those three leak externally and leave evidence on the floor. Piston seal bypass leaks internally, which is why the floor under a creeping unit is often bone dry.

The diagnostic sequence we ran in that Minnesota shop is simple enough for any tech to repeat. Raise the carriage empty to about chest height, mark the column with a grease pencil, and walk away for fifteen minutes. Come back and measure. Then repeat the test with a vehicle on it. If the empty test holds and the loaded test drops, you are almost certainly bypassing internally under load — piston seals. If both drop at the same rate regardless of weight, look harder at the lowering valve and the check assembly. Document those two numbers before you order a single part. Rebuild Kit or Replacement Cylinder?

This is the question we get asked most often, and the honest answer depends less on price than on the condition of the barrel and rod. A rebuild kit gives you new piston seals, rod seals, wipers, and O-rings — everything soft. What it cannot fix is a scored bore or a pitted, rust-flaked chrome rod. If the rod surface has lost its plating in a band where it sits when the carriage is parked at working height, new seals will shred against that band within months. We tell shops to pull the rod, wipe it clean, and run a fingernail down the full stroke. If you can catch a nail in it, buy the cylinder.

The economics matter for a municipal fleet operation with a fixed maintenance budget. Kits typically land in the low-to-mid double digits for a common two-post cylinder and the labor is two to three hours if the bay is accessible. A full replacement cylinder runs several times the kit cost but comes with a warranty and a fresh bore. On older equipment where the cylinder has already been rebuilt once, we lean toward replacement — the second rebuild on a tired barrel tends to fail faster than the first. On a five-year-old auto lift with clean chrome, a kit is the right call and we will say so even though the cylinder is the bigger sale. Locking Latches Are the Actual Safety System

Here is the thing we hammered on hardest with that fleet crew: hydraulics are not a safety device. They are a lifting device. The mechanical locking latches are what keep the vehicle up, and every single time a tech raises a car to working height, the operator should raise past the target, then lower onto the nearest lock and hear both sides click. Doing differential service means lying under a truck for twenty minutes with your torso inside the fall zone. On locks, a seal bypass is an annoyance. Off locks, it is a fatality report.

Latches fail quietly. The spring that returns the pawl gets weak, the cable that releases them stretches, or the ladder rack fills with grease and grit until the pawl can only partially engage. On the Minnesota unit we found one side engaging fully and the other resting on the tip of a tooth — visually similar, mechanically not. Test each latch individually: raise, set down on a lock, then watch and listen to each column as you take the load. Any lock that does not seat with a hard positive stop gets fixed before the bay reopens. Latch springs and release cables are cheap, in stock, and take under an hour per column. There is no version of this job worth deferring to next quarter.

Fluid, Contamination, and the Thing Nobody Checks

Almost every premature seal failure we see traces back to fluid. Hydraulic oil in a shop lift lives a long, quiet life, and because it does, people assume it is fine. It is not. Water condenses in the reservoir through the breather every heating and cooling cycle, and in a Midwest shop that cycles hard between January and July, a reservoir that was never topped or drained will hold a measurable amount of water and rust particles after a decade. Those particles are what scratch the bore and chew the seals you just installed.

When we do a rebuild, we drain the reservoir, wipe it out, replace the filter screen if the unit has one, and refill with the fluid the manufacturer specifies — usually AW-32 or AW-46, and sometimes ATF on older designs. Do not mix them. Then bleed the system properly: raise and lower the carriage through full travel three or four times with the release open at the top of the stroke, because trapped air will make a freshly rebuilt cylinder feel like it still has a seal problem. We also tell shops to check level with the carriage fully down, not up, or you will chronically overfill. What an Auto Lift Inspection Should Actually Cover

ANSI/ALI ALOIM calls for an annual inspection by a qualified inspector, and for a municipal fleet that document is not optional paperwork — it is what your risk manager wants in the file if anything ever goes wrong. But an annual visit is a snapshot. The daily and monthly checks the crew does are what actually keep an auto lift safe between visits, and most shops we walk into have no written routine at all.

The routine we leave behind is short on purpose. Daily: walk the columns for fluid on the floor, confirm arm restraints engage when the arms are loaded, look at the cable and chain slack, and confirm both latches audibly seat. Monthly: grease the carriage slide blocks or check roller condition, torque-check the anchor bolts, inspect the equalizer cables for broken strands or corrosion at the sheaves, and cycle the unit empty to full height listening for changes. Annually: full ALI-style inspection, fluid condition assessment, cylinder inspection, and a documented load test. Every one of those steps takes minutes. We have never once been called to an accident scene where somebody had been doing them. On a well-maintained unit, seal replacement becomes a planned twelve-year event rather than an emergency that costs you a bay in the middle of plow season.

Doing the Rebuild Without Getting Hurt

Servicing a lift cylinder means deliberately defeating the thing that holds a heavy carriage up, so the order of operations matters. Fully lower the carriage to the floor and confirm it is resting on hard stops, not on hydraulic pressure. Disconnect and lock out electrical power at the disconnect — not just the switch on the power unit, because a bumped button while your hands are in the column is how people lose fingers. Then crack the highest fitting first to relieve residual pressure, expecting fluid, and have a pan and rags ready.

On two-post equipment, the cylinder usually pulls up and out of the column once the top pin and the hose are free, but the carriage and its chains or cables need independent support before you drop the pin. We use a rated chain fall or a pair of jack stands rated well above the carriage weight — never a floor jack alone. On four-post units the cylinder often sits under the runway and requires cribbing the deck at a fixed height with steel stands. If any part of that description makes you uneasy, that is good instinct and you should call us instead. We do this work every week across Iowa and into southern Minnesota, and a service call is cheaper than a hospital visit. Either way, once the new seals are in, do a load test with a known vehicle weight and re-check for creep before you sign the bay back over to your techs. A rebuilt auto lift should hold dead still for an hour.

Getting Parts Without Guessing

The most common thing that stalls a rebuild is not skill — it is ordering the wrong kit. Seal kits are dimension-specific, and manufacturers changed bore and rod sizes across production runs without changing model names. We have watched shops lose a week because they ordered by model number off a decal and got a kit for a later revision. The serial tag matters more than the model, and if the tag is unreadable, measured dimensions matter more than either. Bore ID, rod OD, and overall stroke, taken with calipers, will identify a cylinder even when the paperwork is long gone.
