A heavy-duty truck shop owner outside Marion sent us a spreadsheet last winter with six model numbers on it, all quoted by different suppliers, and asked which auto lift he should buy for wheel bearing and hub work on class 6 through 8 trucks. The spreadsheet compared price and capacity and nothing else — no lifting height, no column spread, no pad reach, no power requirement, no note about which units were ALI certified. That is how shops end up with equipment that technically holds the truck but cannot get a duallie hub to a working height. Why Wheel Bearing Work Drives the Spec

Bearing and hub service is one of the most demanding jobs you can put on lifting equipment, and it exposes weak specs fast. You need the wheels completely free, you need the hub centerline somewhere between mid-thigh and chest so a tech can pull a drum, press a race, and set preload without working overhead, and you need the truck stable while a couple hundred pounds of wheel assembly comes off one corner. That last part matters more than people admit — asymmetric load as you pull a dual set off one axle end is exactly when a marginal setup shows you its flex.

For heavy trucks, that combination points at mobile columns or a heavy-duty two-post with the right pad reach, not a drive-on runway. Runways hold the tires, which is the opposite of what bearing work needs unless you add axle jacks. So when we compare an auto lift for a truck shop, the first three numbers we look at are per-column capacity, maximum lifting height, and pick-up point range — how low the forks or pads start and how far they adjust to reach an axle or frame rail. Price comes fourth. A unit that saves you a few thousand and forces techs to work at knee height costs more in labor hours within a year than the difference.

Reading Capacity Ratings Honestly

Capacity is the number everyone quotes and the number most often misunderstood. On a mobile column set, capacity is stated per column — an 18,000 lb column in a set of four gives you 72,000 lb total, which covers nearly any straight truck or tractor. But your real limit is axle weight, not gross vehicle weight, and it is per column. A loaded front axle on a plow truck or a tandem drive with a heavy body can put more on two columns than the arithmetic suggests. Weigh your worst-case vehicle by axle, not by GVWR sticker.

Two-post ratings work differently. A 30,000 lb heavy-duty two-post distributes across four arms, but each arm has its own rating and the asymmetric loading during a wheel-off job matters. Then there is certification. ALI certification means the model was tested to ANSI/ALI ALCTV standards by a third party — load testing, overload, stability, lowering rate, and safety-lock function. Plenty of imported equipment claims a capacity number that was never independently verified. For a commercial shop in Iowa, an uncertified unit can create insurance and OSHA problems on top of the safety question. Mobile Columns Versus Heavy-Duty Two-Post

These two configurations solve the same problem in opposite ways, and the right answer depends on your bay layout and job mix more than on the equipment itself. Mobile columns are wireless or cabled sets you roll into place, position under the tires, and raise as a synchronized group. They take up zero floor space when parked against a wall, handle wildly different wheelbases without repositioning anything permanent, and let one bay serve a pickup in the morning and a tandem dump in the afternoon. For bearing work they are excellent — the forks cradle the tires, the truck goes up, and you pull the wheels with a stand under the axle.

A heavy-duty two-post is faster for repeat work on similar vehicles. Drive in, swing the arms, up. No positioning four columns, no charging batteries, no cable management. The downside is that it is anchored in one place forever, it demands serious concrete, and its arms have a finite reach envelope. We put a 30,000 lb two-post in a Cedar Rapids-area fleet shop that services the same twelve trucks on rotation, and it was clearly the right call. For a general heavy-duty shop in Marion taking whatever rolls in the door, we would take mobile columns almost every time. Column sets also travel — a couple of our customers load them for onsite fleet service.

Height, Reach, and the Specs Nobody Compares

Maximum lifting height on mobile columns typically runs 66 to 72 inches at the fork, which puts a hub centerline right where you want it for bearing work. Cheaper sets stop in the mid-fifties, which sounds fine on paper until a tech is on a creeper seat pressing races. Check it against the tire diameter you actually service, because the fork lifts the tire and the hub sits above that.

Fork width adjustment is the second overlooked spec. A set sized for 22.5 truck tires may not clamp a 19.5 or a super single properly, and adapters cost real money. On two-post units, look at minimum pad height, arm reach at full extension, and drive-through clearance between columns. A wide 30,000 lb unit with plenty of drive-through is worthless if the arms cannot reach a frame rail on your longest chassis. Then power: mobile columns commonly run 208-230V single phase per column or three phase, and the wireless sets need charging infrastructure. Heavy two-post power units are usually three phase in commercial applications. Confirm what your panel supplies before you sign anything, because upgrading service is the single most expensive surprise in an auto lift project. We have seen a panel upgrade cost more than the equipment.

Concrete Requirements for Heavy-Duty Installs

Heavy equipment is unforgiving about slabs. A 30,000 lb two-post typically wants six to eight inches of 3,000 PSI or better concrete under each column, often with reinforced footing pads poured specifically for it. Mobile columns are gentler in one sense — no anchors — but they concentrate the entire vehicle weight onto small wheel footprints that roll across the floor, so a slab with spalling, deep joints, or a thin overpour will complain. We check thickness, look at joint layout, and ask what year the floor went in.

When the slab does not meet spec, the fix is saw-cutting and pouring pads, which typically means a couple of days including cure time before we can set steel. Plan that into your timeline rather than discovering it the week your equipment ships. Drainage slope in truck bays is another factor — floors pitched toward a trench drain can put mobile columns out of level enough to matter, and we will shim or recommend repositioning. One shop we worked with north of Cedar Rapids had a beautiful eight-inch floor with a two-percent pitch across the bay, and we simply laid out the column positions perpendicular to the fall instead of along it. Small adjustment, no concrete work, problem solved. Getting the site right is most of what makes an auto lift last twenty years instead of eight.

Cost Breakdown From Equipment Through Commissioning

Here is the honest structure of a heavy-duty project. Equipment is the biggest line: a four-column mobile set from Rotary or Challenger lands in the mid five figures depending on capacity and whether it is wireless. A 30,000 lb two-post is comparable, sometimes a bit less. Freight on this class of equipment is significant — these ship on flatbed or with liftgate service and the columns are heavy, so budget four figures.

Installation labor for a heavy two-post runs into the low-to-mid four figures depending on concrete work, and mobile columns are cheaper to commission because there is no anchoring, mostly assembly, charging, sync setup, and load testing. Electrical is the wildcard: dropping three-phase power to a bay that already has a suitable panel is modest, while a service upgrade is a serious line item. Concrete pads, if needed, add another chunk. Then commissioning and the initial ALI-standard inspection, plus annual inspections after that. Add it up and a heavy-duty setup is a meaningful capital purchase, but spread across fifteen to twenty years of service it is one of the cheapest things in the building per hour of use.
