This is also where classic truck and muscle car dimensions matter more than people expect. Older vehicles often have different wheelbase and track width than modern cars, and not every four-post runway is set up to safely and accurately position a 1969 truck the same way it handles a current-model sedan. We ask about specific vehicles being restored before recommending runway length and width, because guessing wrong here means redoing part of the install later.
Step Three: Weight Capacity for Restoration Vehicles
Restoration work often involves vehicles that are lighter than modern trucks but sometimes carry unusual weight distribution — a stripped-down project car with the engine still in versus one mid-teardown, or a heavy classic truck with a period-correct engine swap. We recommend sizing capacity around the heaviest realistic state of any vehicle that will go on the lift, not its curb weight on a spec sheet, since project vehicles change weight throughout a build.
Most home restoration shops land comfortably in the 9,000 to 12,000 lb range for a four-post alignment-capable lift, which covers nearly everything short of full-size dual-rear-wheel trucks. Building in that buffer matters more for restoration work than daily-driver use, because vehicles sitting on a lift during a long-term project spend far more cumulative hours loaded than a car that’s up for a twenty-minute service.
Step Four: Concrete Slab Thickness Determines What’s Actually Possible
This is the branch that ends more lift plans than any other. Two-post lifts need reinforced concrete to anchor into safely, and we typically want to see a minimum of 4 inches of slab, properly cured, without significant cracking near proposed anchor locations. Four-post lifts are more forgiving because the weight distributes across runways rather than concentrating at four anchor points, but they’re not immune to slab problems either, especially on older rural pole-building floors that were poured for light storage use rather than raised vehicle weight.
Rebar matters here too. A slab poured with proper rebar reinforcement holds anchors more reliably over years of load-unload cycles than an unreinforced pour, even at the same thickness. If you’re building new or considering a slab replacement specifically to support a lift, we recommend talking to your concrete contractor about rebar spacing before the pour, not after. Retrofitting a lift onto a slab that was never designed for one is one of the most common — and most expensive — surprises we run into on eastern Nebraska farm and shop properties with older buildings.
Step Five: Two-Post, Four-Post, or Both Eventually
Some restoration shop owners end up wanting both configurations over time — a four-post for alignment and long-term project storage, and a two-post for faster underbody access during teardown and mechanical work.
