Weight Capacity for Bearing and Suspension Work

Most home garages and small independent shops land in the 9,000 to 12,000 pound capacity range, which comfortably covers everything from a compact sedan to a three-quarter-ton pickup. If a shop regularly services heavier trucks or fleet vehicles alongside passenger cars, stepping up to a 12,000 or 15,000 pound rated lift is worth the modest price difference rather than working near the edge of a lift’s rating during bearing press operations, which generate real side-loading forces on the arms and columns.

We’ve seen shops try to save money with an undersized lift and then run into arm-locking issues or excessive sway once they’re pressing a bearing at full extension. That sway isn’t just annoying — it’s a safety issue when a tech has their hands inside a wheel well. But baseplate models remain the right call for lower-ceiling buildings, and they’re not a compromise — they’re simply built for a different clearance situation.

It depends entirely on your building’s dimensions, the vehicle mix you service, and how much floor-level obstruction you’re willing to tolerate during hub and bearing jobs.
