Choosing Storage Duty Over Service Duty
The first decision was four-post versus two-post, and for a collector who wants to stack vehicles it is not close. A four-post carries the car on its own tires, which is the right way to leave something parked for six months. There is no suspension loading, no pinch-weld contact, no arms holding a unibody at four points for an entire winter. Roll on, raise, drop onto the locks, walk away. A two-post is the better service lift because wheels hang free, but it is a poor storage lift, and we tell people that even when they’d rather hear otherwise.
The compromise for this particular autolift garage was a 7,000-pound four-post with a rolling jack tray added later. That gives you storage as the primary function and wheel-off capability when you actually need it, at the cost of an extra step and a second lift cycle. Install Day and What Actually Takes the Time
Four-post installs go faster than two-post installs because there is usually no anchoring into concrete required for a freestanding unit, and no core-drilling to verify slab thickness. That said, install day on this job still ran most of a day. Uncrating and staging the columns, runways, and crossbeams takes a while in a building with one overhead door. Then you square the frame, set the runways, route and adjust the four cables, plumb the power unit, fill and bleed the hydraulics, and cycle the lift a dozen times to work air out and check that all four corners land on the same lock tooth.
The cable adjustment is where the real skill lives. On a four-post, level lifting depends entirely on cable tension being equal, and a new lift’s cables stretch during the first weeks of use. We set it level on install day and then told the owner to expect to see one corner lag slightly within a month, which is normal and which we’d come back and correct. He called us about six weeks in, we adjusted, and it stayed put after that. We also installed a caster kit so the whole thing could be repositioned when he reorganized the building, and drip trays under the top runway position so the stored car above wasn’t dropping anything on the car below. The First Real Job: Transmission Service Overhead
About four months in, he pulled a transmission pan on a project car. Transmission work is the job that separates a lift you tolerate from a lift you love, because you’re under the vehicle for hours, you’re catching fluid, and you’re maneuvering a heavy assembly at shoulder height. On a four-post, the runways sit directly under the frame rails, which means the pan area is wide open and there’s nothing in your way. That’s a genuine advantage over a two-post for driveline work, since two-post arms sometimes end up in a spot you’d rather they weren’t.
What he learned, and what we’ve heard from every collector we’ve set up, is that lift height matters more than expected. He’d been raising the car partway to save time. For a transmission job you go all the way up to full height and lock it, because standing fully upright under a vehicle for three hours is the difference between finishing the job and quitting halfway through with a sore neck. He also found out that a fluid catch basin on a low creeper does not work well under a runway lift — the runways are only so far apart and a wide basin fights you. A narrow, deep drain pan solved it. None of these are equipment defects. Month Nine: A Cylinder Starts Weeping

We got out there within a few days, confirmed it was the cylinder rather than a fitting or a hose, and photographed the leak, the serial plate, and the fluid on the floor. Diagnosis matters here because a weeping hose fitting and a bad cylinder seal look similar from six feet away, and a warranty claim on the wrong component wastes everybody’s time. We also checked fluid level and the type of fluid he’d been using, because the wrong fluid can attack seals and manufacturers will ask. How the Warranty Claim Actually Worked
Here’s the part people ask about most. Structural components on a good four-post typically carry a longer warranty term than hydraulic and electrical components — often five years on structure, one to two years on the power unit, cylinders, and electrical, with wear items like cables generally excluded. At nine months, this cylinder was comfortably inside the window. We submitted the claim on the owner’s behalf with photos, the serial number, purchase date, and our written diagnosis. That’s the key difference between buying from a distributor who installs and buying a pallet off the internet: we file the claim, we talk to the factory, and we speak their language.
The manufacturer approved a replacement cylinder and shipped it. We installed it, bled the system, re-leveled the cables, ran the lock tests, and put the lift back in service. Total downtime was about two weeks, most of which was freight. The owner paid nothing for the part. Labor policies vary by brand and by term — some cover labor for a limited period, some cover parts only — and we’re upfront about that before we start rather than after. What we won’t do is what we’ve seen happen to people who bought from a faceless online seller: get told to remove the cylinder themselves, ship it back at their own cost, and wait a month for an inspection. What Year One Taught Us About Maintenance
Twelve months in, the maintenance rhythm for this autolift garage had settled into something simple. Every month: eyeball all four cables for fraying, especially where they pass over sheaves; confirm all four locks engage audibly and simultaneously; look at the power unit for seepage; check that the runway surfaces are clean of oil. Every six months: check hydraulic fluid level with the lift fully lowered, grease the sheaves and slider blocks per the manual, and cycle the lift through its full travel a few times if it’s been sitting parked in one position for months.
That last one matters more than people think for storage lifts. A collector’s lift may sit at the same height for an entire winter, which is fine mechanically but lets seals dry out on the unused portion of the cylinder bore and lets cables sit in one position. Cycling it through full travel monthly keeps everything moving and, honestly, gives you a reason to look at it.
