The most stressful day of building an autolift garage is almost never install day — it is delivery day. A collector down near the Iowa-Missouri border learned that the hard way a couple of years ago. He had a new 30×40 pole building with a good slab and twelve-foot sidewalls, six vehicles he wanted to stack and store, and a four-post lift arriving on a semi. What he did not have was a forklift, a loading dock, or a plan for getting three crated columns and two runways off a fifty-three-foot trailer sitting in gravel. This is the story of that first year, from the freight call through the first wheel bearing job he did on his own lift.

Why he wanted a four-post in the first place
His goal was simple and it is the most common one we hear from collectors: park one vehicle on top, park another underneath, and still be able to do real maintenance. He was not planning to run a business out of the building. He wanted a seven-thousand-pound-class lift for passenger cars and a half-ton pickup, plus the ability to get under something for oil changes, exhaust, brakes, and eventually wheel bearings on a car he was slowly bringing back.
A four-post is the right answer for that brief and a two-post usually is not. Drive-on runways mean you do not have to set arms, find pickup points, or worry about a vehicle sitting on a lift for eight months on rubber pads. The wheels stay loaded, the suspension stays loaded, and long-term storage is what the design is genuinely good at. The tradeoff is that the wheels are captured on the runways, so any job that requires the wheels off needs jack trays or rolling bridge jacks. That is the part people forget when they price a storage lift, and it is the exact reason his wheel bearing job later that year turned into a shopping trip. The freight conversation nobody has before ordering
Here is what shows up on a truck: three or four column crates, two runway sections that are long and awkward, a crated power unit, a pallet of hardware and cables, and sometimes ramps banded separately. Total shipping weight on a typical 8,000 to 9,000 lb four-post runs well over a thousand pounds and is spread across pieces that are individually too heavy for two people to lift by hand. The runways are the problem child — they are long, they are heavy, and they do not have convenient handles.
Freight carriers deliver curbside. That phrase does a lot of work. It means the driver gets the pallets to the back of the trailer and no further. If you do not have a dock or a forklift, you either pay for a liftgate service and hope the pieces fit on the gate, or you have equipment on site. For a rural autolift garage at the end of a gravel lane, there is a third problem: some carriers will not send a fifty-three-foot trailer down a road they cannot turn around on, and you end up meeting the truck at a co-op lot or a grain elevator. We ask about the driveway before we quote, because a delivery that has to be re-brokered costs more than the liftgate would have. Ask your supplier three questions before you order: what is the total piece count, what is the heaviest single piece, and can a semi physically reach my building. Get those answers in writing.
How we actually got it off the trailer
In his case the solution was a borrowed skid loader with forks and one neighbor. That is the most common rural Iowa answer and it works fine if the forks are long enough to get under a runway near its balance point and the machine has the lift capacity with the load out on the tips. A skid loader rated for two thousand pounds at the pins is not rated for that same load two feet out on forks, and runways stick out a long way. We slid runways off onto two sets of jack stands and then walked them into the building with the loader rather than trying to carry them the whole distance in the air.
Columns are easier. They are dense and short enough to strap and set upright. The hardware pallet a person can break down by hand. What matters is having a staging plan before the truck arrives, because the driver has a schedule and detention charges are real. We tell customers to clear a flat spot near the door, have blocking and jack stands ready, and know exactly where each piece is going before anything touches the ground. Dragging a runway across gravel to reposition it is how you scratch a brand-new deck. Slab, sidewalls, and stacking two vehicles
His pole building had twelve-foot sidewalls, which is comfortable but not unlimited. Stacking two vehicles means adding up three numbers: the height of the vehicle underneath, the runway deck thickness plus lift structure, and the height of the vehicle on top. Two sedans fit easily under twelve feet. A sedan under a tall pickup or an SUV gets tight fast, and truss webbing or a garage door track can steal the inches you were counting on. We measure to the lowest obstruction, not to the peak, because the peak is not where the vehicle will be.
Slab requirements for a four-post are more forgiving than a two-post because the load is distributed across four baseplates rather than concentrated in two anchor clusters resisting an overturning moment. Many four-post storage lifts are freestanding and technically do not require anchoring, though we anchor them anyway whenever the slab allows — it keeps the columns square and stops the whole assembly from walking when you drive on. His floor was a good four-inch pour with reinforcement, which is fine for this class of lift. Where we get nervous in an autolift garage is a thin, unreinforced pour with visible cracking, or a slab that was placed over poorly compacted fill and has started to settle. Level matters too: a four-post out of level binds cables and makes the locks engage unevenly. We shim the bases at install and re-check after the first few cycles.
The first wheel bearing job and what it taught him
About eight months in, a front wheel bearing on one of his cars started howling. This is the moment a storage-first buyer discovers the geometry of a four-post. The car was already on the lift at a perfect working height, the underside was fully accessible, and the wheel he needed to pull was sitting solidly on the runway with the whole weight of the car on it. There is no way to get a wheel off a four-post without lifting the vehicle off the runway.
The fix is a rolling bridge jack — a jack that spans the two runways, rolls to wherever you need it, and picks the vehicle up by the frame or subframe so the wheels hang free. Some setups use sliding jack trays with a bottle jack instead. Either way, it is an accessory, it has to match your lift’s runway spacing, and it needs to be ordered as a matched part rather than improvised. He ended up buying one, waiting on freight, and then doing the bearing in an afternoon with the car at chest height, which he described as the single best part of owning the lift. The broader lesson for anyone building an autolift garage: think through every job you plan to do, not just the parking. Wheels off, exhaust drops, transmission out, springs compressed — each of those has an accessory or a clearance implication. Buying them up front costs less and arrives on the same truck.
Maintenance in year one, and what actually wears
A four-post lift is mechanically simple, which lulls people into ignoring it. The things that wear are predictable. Cables stretch during the first several months of use — that is normal, not a defect — and equalizing them keeps the runways level and the locks engaging together. If one corner starts dropping first or the locks clack unevenly, that is your cue. We recommend checking cable tension and lock synchronization after the first month, then a couple times a year for a home lift that cycles a few times a week.
Sheaves and cable ends are the other wear points. Inspect for broken strands, fraying near the sheaves, and any rust that has bloomed on a cable in an unheated Iowa building over winter. A cable with visible broken wires gets replaced, not watched. Hydraulic fluid should be clean and at level; a slow drift down overnight usually means a cylinder seal or a check valve, both of which are serviceable parts we stock. Keep the runways swept — grit ground into a deck under tires does more cosmetic damage over ten years than anything else.
