A municipal fleet manager in Sioux City called us last spring because the second bay in his autolift garage had developed a slow, sneaky problem: after a shock-and-spring job on a plow truck, the passenger-side arms would settle about half an inch overnight. Nobody had been hurt, nobody had dropped a vehicle, and the lift still passed a casual look-over. But his techs were doing suspension and shock replacement all day long — reefing on control arm bolts with a breaker bar while standing under two tons of steel — and half an inch of unexplained drift was enough for him to shut the bay down. That instinct was exactly right, and the cause turned out to be a set of tired cylinder seals.

Why Suspension Work Punishes Cylinders Harder Than Anything Else

Most people assume a lift cylinder wears out on the way up. It doesn’t — it wears out from side load and shock load, and suspension work delivers both in bulk. When a tech is prying a lower control arm free, hammering a ball joint out of a knuckle, or fighting a rusted shock bolt on a Sioux City plow truck that’s eaten five winters of brine, the vehicle rocks. Every one of those jolts transfers through the runways or arms, into the carriage, and down the cylinder rod. The rod doesn’t like being pushed sideways. Over a few thousand cycles the rod seal and the rod bushing take an oval-shaped beating, and the piston packing starts letting fluid slip past on the pressure side.

That’s why the shops with the fastest seal wear in our service territory aren’t the tire shops or the general repair bays — they’re the fleet and suspension shops. A brake job barely disturbs the lift. Pulling coil springs out of six trucks a week is a different animal entirely. If you run that kind of work through an autolift garage, plan on inspecting cylinders on a schedule rather than waiting for symptoms, and budget for a seal kit every few years instead of treating it as a surprise. The good news is that seals are cheap relative to a cylinder, and a rebuild done early keeps you from scoring a rod and turning a modest parts order into a full assembly replacement.

Reading the Symptoms: Drift, Weep, and the Chatter Nobody Reports

Three signs tell us a cylinder is losing its seals. The first is drift — the lift settles when it’s loaded and holding, even a fraction of an inch per hour. That’s internal bypass past the piston packing, fluid crossing from the pressure side to the return side, and it will get worse, never better. The second is external weep. Wipe the rod clean, cycle the lift a few times, then look at the gland area. A trace film is normal on some designs; a running drip or a fluid trail down the cylinder body is not. The third is chatter or stick-slip on the way up, especially in the first foot of travel, which often means the rod bushing is worn and the rod is no longer running true.

The symptom nobody reports is uneven lift height between sides. Techs adapt to it. They’ll shim, they’ll eyeball it, they’ll say “it’s always done that.” In a two-post it usually points to equalization cable stretch, but in a four-post or a scissor it very often points to one cylinder bypassing more than the other. Whenever we get a call about a lift in an autolift garage that no longer comes up level, cylinders and cables are the first two things we check, and one of them is the culprit the overwhelming majority of the time. Document what you see with a tape measure and a phone photo — it turns a vague complaint into a diagnosis we can act on before you ever pay for a service call.

The Safety-First Walkthrough We Use Before Touching a Cylinder

Nothing about a cylinder job starts with a wrench. It starts with getting the vehicle off, the lift down, and the energy out of the system. We clear the bay entirely — no cars, no tool carts, no toolbox parked under the runways. Then we lower the lift fully onto its mechanical stops or, if the design allows, onto stands rated well above the carriage weight. Hydraulic pressure is not a safety device. A locking latch engaged on a solid stop is. We never work under a raised carriage that is being held by fluid alone, and neither should your techs.

Next comes lockout. Breaker off, tagged, and — in a shared fleet building where three departments have keys to the same door — a physical lock on the panel, not a sticky note. Then we crack the fittings slowly to bleed residual pressure and catch fluid in a pan rather than on the floor. Only after all of that do we pull retaining hardware. A fleet shop we support in northwest Iowa built this exact sequence into a laminated card zip-tied to each column in their autolift garage, and their maintenance crew follows it every time. It takes four extra minutes. It has also meant that in years of service work, nobody in that building has been under a lift that wasn’t mechanically supported. If your shop has no written sequence, write one this week — it’s the cheapest safety upgrade available to you.

Rebuild Kit or Replace the Cylinder? How We Decide

Once the cylinder is out and on the bench, the decision is usually made for you by the condition of the rod and the bore. Run a fingernail down the rod. If you can catch a groove, the chrome is compromised, and a new seal will chew itself up in short order sealing against a scratch. Deep pitting from moisture, a bent rod from a side-load event, or a bore that’s been scored by a failed piston are all replace-the-assembly conditions. We don’t fight those; a rebuilt cylinder that leaks again in six months costs more in downtime than the assembly ever would have.

But a huge share of the cylinders we open are perfectly rebuildable. Rod is smooth, bore is clean, and the only thing wrong is that the elastomer has gone hard and taken a set after a decade of heat cycles. In that case a seal kit — rod seal, wiper, piston packing, O-rings, and often a new rod bushing — restores the cylinder to like-new holding. It’s a fraction of the cost of an assembly, and for older lifts where the original assembly is discontinued, it’s frequently the only path that keeps the bay working. That flexibility is what keeps a twenty-year-old lift in a working autolift garage instead of on a scrap trailer. Fluid, Contamination, and the Real Reason Seals Die Young

Seals rarely die of old age alone — they die of dirt. Hydraulic fluid in a lift power unit is a closed system on paper, but in practice the reservoir breathes, techs top it off with whatever’s on the shelf, and grinding dust from a suspension job floats around every bay in the building. Abrasive particles suspended in the oil act like lapping compound on the rod seal and the bore. That’s why two identical lifts, installed the same week, can be five years apart on seal life depending entirely on how the fluid was maintained.

Our standing recommendation for fleet and suspension shops: check the fluid level monthly, look at the fluid’s color and clarity while you’re in there, and change it on the interval the manufacturer specifies rather than never. Use the fluid grade in the manual — an AW-32 or AW-46 hydraulic oil in most cases — and don’t substitute ATF or motor oil because it was handy. Keep the fill cap on and the breather clear. And when you do a cylinder rebuild, flush the reservoir and replace the fluid at the same time; putting clean seals back into dirty oil is a waste of a good afternoon. Annual Inspection: What Fleet and Municipal Shops Owe Their Techs

Municipal and county shops operate under more scrutiny than most independents, and that’s actually an advantage — it forces a paper trail. ANSI/ALI guidance calls for a qualified annual inspection of vehicle lifts, and in practice that means somebody who knows the equipment goes through anchors, cables, chains, latches, arm restraints, cylinders, hoses, overhead shutoffs, and controls, then hands you a written record. We do these inspections across northwest Iowa and southern Minnesota, and the write-ups are rarely dramatic. It’s usually a stretched cable, a latch that isn’t engaging on one notch, a hose rubbing where it shouldn’t, or a cylinder starting to weep.

The value isn’t in finding catastrophes — it’s in catching the small stuff while it’s still a parts order instead of an incident report. For a shop doing suspension and shock replacement all day, that annual look-over is the difference between planned downtime and a bay closed on a Tuesday morning with four trucks waiting. Keep the inspection reports in a binder, keep the repair receipts with them, and note every seal kit and cable set you install. If a supervisor, an insurer, or a safety officer ever asks how the equipment in your autolift garage is maintained, you hand over the binder and the conversation ends. Getting the Right Parts the First Time

The single biggest source of delay in a cylinder job isn’t the labor — it’s ordering the wrong kit. Lift manufacturers changed cylinder suppliers, bore diameters, and gland designs across production runs, and the model number on the nameplate alone often isn’t enough. What we actually need is the serial number, a clear photo of the data tag, and if possible a photo of the cylinder itself with the gland nut visible. From that we can pin down bore, rod diameter, and seal profile and ship the correct kit instead of a close guess.

If you’re mid-teardown and the tag is unreadable — which happens constantly on lifts that have lived through twenty Iowa winters — measure. Rod diameter, bore, stroke, and overall pin-to-pin length get us most of the way there.
