An autolift garage built around a vehicle collection has a different set of priorities than a production shop, and we learned that again last year working with a collector about an hour north of the Iowa line in southern Minnesota. He had six cars, a heated 40×60 outbuilding, and one specific problem: he wanted to store two of them stacked, but he also wanted to actually pull a transmission on a third without renting shop time somewhere else. That combination — long-term storage plus real service work — shapes every decision, from lift style to arm restraint design to how much ceiling you need above the highest roofline. Here is how his first year went, start to finish.

Why a Collector’s Building Is Not a Shop Building
When somebody calls us about equipping a shop, the conversation is about throughput. How many bays, how fast can a tech get a car in the air, what is the duty cycle. A collector’s building is the opposite. The lift may sit loaded for eight months at a stretch, then get cycled hard for a weekend when a project car comes apart. That changes what matters. Duty cycle stops being the constraint and static load-holding becomes the constraint — meaning cable condition, lock ladder engagement, and slack-cable detection all carry more weight than motor amperage or rise time.
It also changes the floor conversation. A production shop pours a bay to spec and everything sits on it. In a collector’s outbuilding, the slab often went in years earlier for a different purpose — equipment storage, a hobby space, sometimes just a place to park the boat. Our southern Minnesota customer had a nominal four-inch pour with unknown reinforcement, which is extremely common in ag-country pole buildings. For a four-post that spreads load across four base plates and does not rely on anchors to resist overturning, that is usually fine. For a two-post it is not, and we told him so before he bought anything. He ended up doing both: a four-post for the stack, and a small saw-cut-and-repour section along one wall so a two-post could go in later. That sequencing saved him money and kept the building usable the whole time.
Picking the Lift for a Two-Car Stack
His heaviest vehicle was a mid-70s land yacht at roughly 5,200 pounds. His tallest was a lifted pickup he was not planning to store up top. That put him comfortably inside a 9,000 lb four-post rating with real margin, which is where we like collectors to land — you never want to be storing at 95 percent of plate capacity for months on end. We spec’d a wide, long-runway configuration so the runways would take both the long-wheelbase car and anything shorter without repositioning approach ramps constantly.
Ceiling height is where most collector projects get decided. He measured 12 feet to the bottom of the truss, and that is the number that matters, not the peak. Stacked storage math is simple but unforgiving: bottom vehicle height, plus runway thickness, plus the top vehicle’s height, plus the clearance you need to actually walk a hood open underneath. He wound up with roughly ten inches of headroom over the top car’s roofline, which is workable but means he pays attention every single time he raises it. We always tell people building a new autolift garage from scratch to go 14 feet if the budget allows, because the incremental cost of taller sidewalls at framing time is a fraction of what it costs to wish you had them later. Nobody has ever called us complaining their ceiling was too high.
Installation Day in a Working Outbuilding
We ran the install in a single day. The four-post arrived on a flatbed, and because his building had a 14-foot overhead door and a clear concrete apron, we could unload directly instead of staging in the yard. That is worth planning for — the difference between a smooth unload and a muddy one in a Minnesota March is about three hours of labor.
Assembly on a four-post is mostly sequencing. Columns get set and squared, crossmembers go in, runways drop on, then cables get routed and tensioned. Cable tensioning is the step where corners get cut by DIY installers and where we spend the most time. All four cables have to carry equal load, or the runways rack under load and the lock ladders engage unevenly. We set tension, cycle the lift several times unloaded, then re-check, because cables seat and stretch slightly on first use. We came back at the 30-day mark and re-tensioned again, which is standard on any new install we do. He also had us plumb the power unit for a remote mount so the motor noise sits away from the seating area he built into one corner — a small thing, but a shop that is pleasant to be in gets used more. That is a real consideration in an autolift garage that doubles as a hangout space.
Arm Restraints and Safety Cams on the Two-Post Side
When the two-post went in that fall, the sub-topic he had the most questions about was arm restraints. Fair enough — it is the single component that keeps a vehicle from walking off the pads when you break a stubborn fastener loose. On a modern asymmetric two-post, restraints are typically a gear-and-pawl arrangement at the arm pivot. As the arm rotates, a pawl drops into a toothed gear and locks the arm’s swing position. It does not lock the arm’s height or the telescoping section; it locks rotation only. That is the part people misunderstand.
Here is what we drill into every owner: the restraint only engages under load. You set the pads, raise the lift until the tires just leave the ground, and you hear or feel the pawl seat. If you do not confirm engagement, you are running with no restraint. On some designs the pawl is spring-loaded and self-engaging; on others there is a lift-and-release collar the installer or owner must understand. We physically walk the customer through engaging and disengaging each of the four arms before we leave. The same goes for safety cams — the ratcheting locks inside the columns. Raise past the lock you want, then lower onto it so the pawl carries the load instead of the hydraulic cylinder. A cylinder holds a car fine right up until a seal decides otherwise. A steel lock does not care. Any serious autolift garage owner should be lowering onto locks every single time, without exception.
The First Real Service: Pulling a Transmission
His first big job on the new setup was a transmission service on a four-speed automatic in one of the collection cars — new fluid, new filter, and a leaking rear seal that had been dripping on the floor for two years. This is exactly the work that separates a storage-only setup from a real working space, and it is where the two-post earned its slab repour.
Transmission work rewards height. You want the car high enough to stand comfortably underneath with a jack under the pan, not crouched over on a creeper. He raised to the second-from-top lock, confirmed all four arm restraints were engaged, and set a transmission jack under the case before touching a crossmember bolt. Weight distribution shifts dramatically when you drop a transmission — you are removing 150 to 200 pounds from behind the centerline, and on a two-post that changes the balance on the pads. We tell people to think about that before they start, not after they hear a creak. He also learned something most first-year owners learn: a drip tray and a bag of oil-dry are not optional. Automatic transmission fluid gets everywhere, and epoxy floors get slick fast. The job took him a full Saturday, which he said was about four times longer than a shop would have taken and roughly one-tenth the enjoyment cost. That is the collector’s math, and it is why an autolift garage pays for itself in ways a spreadsheet does not capture.
Maintenance Rhythm for a Lift That Sits Loaded
A lift that holds a car for eight months needs a different maintenance rhythm than one that cycles forty times a day. The wear mechanism is not cycles, it is corrosion and set. Cables sitting under constant tension in an unheated or intermittently heated building go through humidity swings, and that is where surface rust starts — particularly at the sheave contact points where the cable flexes and the lubricant gets squeezed out.
Our recommendation for storage-heavy use is a quarterly visual on all four cables, running a rag along each one to feel for broken strands or flat spots. Any broken wire means the cable comes out of service. We stock replacement cables for most major four-post platforms, and we would rather sell somebody a set early than get the phone call after. Beyond cables: check lock ladder engagement at each height, verify the slack-cable safety trips when you test it, grease the sheaves and slider blocks per the manual, and look at the hydraulic hose where it flexes at the column. Also — and this one gets ignored constantly — cycle the lift even when you are not using it. A lift that sits at the same height for a year develops uneven wear on the lock pawls and lets seals take a set in the cylinder. Run it up and down a few times each season. What We Would Tell the Next Collector
Twelve months in, our southern Minnesota customer has stacked storage that works, a two-post that handles real service, and a punch list of things he would do differently. Top of that list: taller sidewalls. Second: run more electrical than you think you need, on more circuits than you think you need, before the interior gets finished. Third: think about the door swing and approach angles before the concrete goes down, because a lift positioned two feet off ideal will annoy you every week for twenty years.
The other thing we would say is do not buy on price alone. The market is full of imported equipment with no parts pipeline behind it, and a collector’s lift is a twenty-year purchase. When a cable or a cylinder or a lock pawl fails on a name-brand unit, we can get the part. When it fails on a no-name unit that came off a container six years ago, sometimes nobody can.
