An RV and trailer service shop north of Waterloo called us in early spring wanting to build out an autolift garage, and the first question out of the owner’s mouth was whether he should buy used. Fair question. He was looking at a listing for a decommissioned four-post out of a closed dealership, priced at maybe a third of new, and he had winter storage customers stacking up faster than he had floor space. What followed was a twelve-month arc we have watched play out dozens of times across northeast Iowa: the used-versus-new math, an install day that ran longer than anybody planned, a full storage season, and a first service call that told us more about the equipment than any spec sheet would have.

The Used Listing That Almost Happened

The used four-post he found was a real machine from a known brand, roughly fifteen years old, pulled out of a dealership that closed. Photos looked decent. The price was genuinely attractive. We drove over and looked at it with him, because that is usually the only way to settle the question. What we found was typical for equipment of that age: the runways were solid, the columns were straight, but the cables had visible strand breaks at the sheave contact points, three of the four sheaves had flat spots, the power unit was leaking at the shaft seal, and the lock ladder on one column had a bent rung somebody had hammered back.

None of that is fatal. All of it costs money. Cables, sheaves, a power unit, and lock hardware on a four-post of that size added up to a meaningful fraction of what a new mid-tier unit costs, and that is before install labor and before you account for the fact that a fifteen-year-old model may have obsolete parts nobody stocks. That is the actual used-versus-new calculation for an autolift garage: not sticker price against sticker price, but sticker plus refurbishment plus parts availability plus downtime risk, against new with a warranty. In his case the gap closed to maybe fifteen percent, and he bought new. In other cases we have told customers the opposite — a five-year-old unit from a current production line with good cables is often a genuinely smart buy.

How to Actually Inspect a Used Lift

If you are going to look at used equipment, look at the right things. Start with the serial plate and confirm the model is still in production or at least still supported. Then go straight to the cables. Run a rag along the full length — snags mean broken strands, and a cable with broken strands is scrap regardless of how the rest of the machine looks. Check sheaves for flat spots and check that they spin freely by hand. Look at the lock ladders on all four columns for bent, cracked, or repaired rungs. Pull the power unit reservoir cap and look at the fluid: milky means water intrusion, black and gritty means it has been run hard without service.

On the structure, sight down each column for bow and look hard at every weld, especially where the runways meet the crossmembers. Surface rust is cosmetic. Scaling rust or pitting at a weld toe is not. Ask whether it was ever load tested and whether the seller has any inspection paperwork — most will not, and that tells you something too. Finally, ask how it will come out of the building. Disassembly, transport, and reassembly on a used four-post is a full day of labor, sometimes two, and buyers routinely forget to price it. We do that work, and we will also just come look at a machine with you before you commit. An hour of our time has saved a lot of Waterloo shop owners from an autolift garage full of somebody else’s problem.

Install Day and What Went Sideways

He ended up with a new commercial-duty four-post, 14,000 lb capacity, extended-length runways sized for dual-wheel trailers and small motorhome chassis. Install was scheduled for a Tuesday. We showed up, unloaded, and immediately hit the thing that delays half of all installs: the slab. His building was a 1980s shop addition and the pour under the planned footprint was thinner than the rest of the floor, with an expansion joint running right where a column base wanted to sit. A four-post is less anchor-critical than a two-post, but it still needs consistent bearing, and setting a column across a joint is asking for a shifted lock ladder inside two years.

We moved the whole footprint about three feet, which meant repositioning where the air drop and the electrical would land and reworking his traffic flow. That cost half a day. The rest went normally: columns set and plumbed, runways lifted into place, cables routed and equalized, hydraulics connected and bled, locks cycled through every position, and a full-load test with a loaded trailer he had sitting outside. By late afternoon it was working. The lesson we repeat to everyone planning an autolift garage is to have us look at the floor before the equipment ships, not the morning it arrives. Ten minutes with a core sample and a straightedge prevents a lost half-day.

Seasonal Storage: What Changes When a Vehicle Sits for Six Months

His main use case was seasonal storage — boats, campers, collector cars, and customer vehicles parked from October through April. That is a different duty cycle than service work, and it changes maintenance in ways people do not anticipate. A lift holding a load for six straight months is sitting on its mechanical locks the entire time, which is exactly what locks are for, but it also means the cables are under sustained tension with no cycling. Cables stretch. When you drop that vehicle in spring, the equalization will almost certainly be off, and if you do not readjust it, one corner carries more than its share all next season.

Long-term storage also means dust and, in an unheated northeast Iowa shop, condensation. We tell storage customers to cycle the lift empty at least once a month through the off-season if they can, and if they cannot, to plan on a full equalization check and a hydraulic bleed every spring. Keep the hydraulic reservoir topped, because a low reservoir pulls in humid air and you get water in the fluid over a winter. Cover exposed cylinder rods if the lift sits fully down for months. And do not stack storage weight beyond rating just because “it’s only sitting” — static load is still load, and a 14,000 lb rating is a 14,000 lb rating whether the vehicle is up for an hour or a season. The First Service Call, Eight Months In

June of the following year, he called. The lift was drifting — coming down maybe an inch over a couple of hours with a camper on it. He assumed cylinder seals and was already bracing for a bill. It was not the cylinder. It was a small weep at a hydraulic fitting where the line had been rubbing against a runway edge, plus air still in the system from a top-off he had done himself with the wrong fluid weight. Two hours, a new fitting, a length of line rerouted with a clamp, a full flush and bleed with correct fluid, and it held perfectly.

That call is worth telling because it is the most common first-year service event we see on a new autolift garage installation, and it is almost never the expensive thing people fear. Drift usually traces to fittings, air, or a lock not being used. Uneven lift usually traces to cable equalization. Noisy operation usually traces to dry slider surfaces or a sheave that wants grease. Genuine cylinder seal failure inside the first several years is rare on quality equipment that gets clean fluid. What we do ask is that owners call before they start swapping parts — we have shipped cylinders to people who needed a five-dollar fitting, and we would rather diagnose over the phone for free. What the First Year Actually Cost Him

By the twelve-month mark he had the equipment, professional install, the half-day slab rework, one service call, and a spring maintenance visit into it. Against that, he had added indoor storage revenue through a full winter, quit renting overflow space, and could suddenly do underbody work on trailers and small RV chassis that he had previously turned away or sent down the road. The lift paid its own way inside the first storage season, which is the pattern we see when a shop’s constraint is genuinely floor space and time under a vehicle rather than headcount.

Would used have worked? Possibly. If that first listing had come with sound cables and current-production parts support, we would have told him to buy it, and we tell people that regularly — there is no upsell in selling someone a hoist that puts them out of service in year two. The honest framework is simple: price the refurbishment realistically, verify parts availability by model number before you commit, price disassembly and transport, and then compare against new with warranty and a documented install. Do that math on paper and the answer usually declares itself. Sizing Advice for RV, Trailer, and Storage Shops

A few things we have learned repeatedly from shops in this niche. Capacity is rarely the binding constraint — length and width are. Standard four-post runways are built for passenger vehicles and light trucks; if you handle dual-axle trailers, toy haulers, or Class B chassis, you want extended runways and a wider drive-through, and you want to measure the actual longest unit you intend to service, not the average. Ramp approach angle matters too, since low-clearance trailers and lowered vehicles will drag on a standard ramp. Extended approach ramps are cheap when ordered with the lift and awkward to add later.

Ceiling height governs everything else. For an autolift garage doing storage stacking, you need the parked vehicle height plus the vehicle underneath plus runway thickness plus a safety margin, and in most Iowa pole buildings with 12 to 14 foot sidewalls that math works for cars but not for anything tall. Check your truss bottom chord, not the sidewall number. Also plan for a caster kit if you might reposition the lift seasonally, and plan for rolling jacks if you want to pull wheels — a four-post without jacks limits you to underbody work only. Get those decisions right up front and the equipment will serve fifteen or twenty years. Get them wrong and you will be shopping again in three.
