A collector in western Illinois reached out to us a couple of winters ago with a 30×40 pole building, a concrete floor, twelve-foot sidewalls, and six vehicles that needed to live somewhere better than under car covers. He wanted to store one car up and park another underneath, and he wanted to do his own maintenance and get the whole fleet through annual state inspections without hauling anything to town. That is a textbook autolift garage project, and it is one of the most common calls we get. What follows is roughly how that first year went — the spec conversation, why ALI Gold certification came up, install day, and the first service call about eight months in.

The First Phone Call: Weight, Height, and What Goes Underneath

He opened with a number: 7,000 lb or less. Passenger cars, nothing heavy, no dually pickups. That is a useful starting point but it is not the whole spec, because for a stacking setup the limiting factor is almost never capacity — it is height. Twelve-foot sidewalls sound generous until you account for the truss bottom chord, any lights or conduit hanging below it, the height of the lift’s own runways and crossbeams, and the height of the car you want to park underneath. Stack a sedan on top and a sedan below and you need roughly nine and a half to ten feet of usable rise. Put an SUV on either level and the math tightens fast.

So the first conversation was measuring, not shopping. We asked him to measure from the finished floor to the lowest obstruction at the actual spot he wanted the lift, then to measure his overhead door header, then to get us the roof heights of the two tallest vehicles in the fleet. It turned out he had about eleven feet two inches of clear height and a nine-foot door. That is workable for a four-post stacking two cars, provided he kept a low sedan on the bottom. Building an autolift garage in a pole barn is mostly this kind of arithmetic, and doing it before you order is the difference between a good year and a very frustrating one.

Why ALI Gold Certification Came Up Immediately

He asked a good question on that first call: how do I know the thing is actually safe? The honest answer is that the lift industry has a real, independent third-party program for exactly this, and it is worth understanding. ALI — the Automotive Lift Institute — runs a certification program where lifts are tested by an independent lab against the ANSI/ALI ALCTV safety standard, covering load-holding, stability, structural integrity, and control function. Certified models carry the ALI Gold label, and the certification is model-specific, not brand-wide. A manufacturer can have some certified models and some that are not.

That distinction matters more than most buyers realize. Plenty of imported lifts on the internet make safety claims without any third-party testing behind them. For a home autolift garage where you will be under the car yourself, and where your kids may be in the building, paying the modest premium for an ALI Gold certified model is the easiest good decision in the whole project. We steered him toward certified four-post models from the brands we stand behind, and we told him where to look up the certification directory himself rather than just taking our word for it. The Slab Question in a Pole Building

Pole barn slabs are a mixed bag. Some are beautifully done — proper subgrade, rebar or fiber, 4,000 PSI, four to five inches thick. Others are a thin pour over loose fill because the building was originally meant for hay and a tractor. Ours was somewhere in between: about four and a half inches, decent mix, poured six years earlier, with saw cuts running through the middle of the building.

For a four-post that is usually fine, and that is one of the reasons we recommend four-posts for storage-focused home shops. The load spreads across four baseplates, and most four-posts do not require anchoring at all for basic storage duty — though we anchor them anyway, because a lift that cannot shift is a lift that stays level. What we did care about was where the saw cuts ran, because you do not want an anchor within a few inches of a joint, and you do not want two columns on opposite sides of a cut that might settle differentially. We shifted the layout about two feet to keep all four baseplates on the same slab panel. Small change, made during the walkthrough, no cost. Skipping that step in an autolift garage build is how you end up chasing level every spring.

Install Day and What Actually Takes the Time

Install on a four-post in a clean, empty pole building is a same-day job for our crew. The parts that take time are not the ones people expect. Uncrating and laying out components goes quick. Setting the columns plumb and getting the runways square and level in both directions is the fussy part, and it is worth doing slowly, because everything downstream — smooth lock engagement, even cable tension, no drift — depends on it. Then we run the power, bleed the hydraulic system, and cycle the lift through full travel repeatedly, watching that all four locks engage simultaneously and audibly.

The last hour is the part that matters most for a homeowner: the walkthrough. Where the lock release is and how it works. Why you never leave a lift resting on hydraulic pressure instead of the mechanical locks. How to read the cable condition. What the monthly and annual checks look like. Where the manual lives so it does not disappear into a drawer. We also talked through wheel positioning on the runways for long-term storage and why he should roll each stored car a few inches every couple of months. A well-set-up autolift garage is a system the owner understands, not just a piece of equipment sitting in a building. He had a car in the air and one parked underneath before we left the driveway.

Months Two Through Eight: Inspections and Real Use

The practical payoff showed up during annual inspection season. Getting six vehicles through Illinois annual inspections used to mean scheduling, hauling, and waiting. With the lift in place, he could put each car up, walk the undercarriage, check brake line condition, look at exhaust hangers, verify tire condition and wear patterns, and fix whatever needed fixing before anything went in front of an inspector. Nothing failed. That alone, he told us later, justified a meaningful chunk of the purchase.

The other thing that changed was how much maintenance actually got done. This is consistent across nearly every home shop we equip. When getting under a car means twenty minutes with a floor jack and stands, oil changes slip and brake inspections become “next month.” When it takes 90 seconds, the work happens. He did fluid services on all six vehicles that year, caught a leaking rear main on one project car early enough that it was a scheduled job instead of a driveway emergency, and rotated tires on schedule for the first time in years. The First Service Call and What It Cost

About eight months in, he called with a symptom we hear constantly: the lift was drifting down slowly overnight, maybe an inch or two. He was worried it was something serious. It was not. Slow settle on a four-post is almost always one of three things — a weeping cylinder seal, a leaking hose fitting, or trapped air in the system. In his case it was a fitting that had backed off slightly, likely never torqued perfectly at the factory. Fifteen minutes and a wrench.

What we used the visit for was the first annual inspection: cable condition and tension at all four corners, lock engagement, hydraulic hose condition, power unit reservoir level, baseplate condition, and a check that the runways were still dead level. Everything checked out. We also swapped the hydraulic fluid, which nobody thinks about and which quietly determines how long a power unit lasts. That is what year-one ownership of an autolift garage typically looks like — a small hydraulic gremlin, a scheduled inspection, and otherwise nothing.
