Planning an autolift garage around a restoration hobby is a very different exercise than planning one around oil changes, and we get calls about it constantly from farm shops across western Illinois and eastern Iowa. A gentleman put up a 40×60 machine shed outside Galesburg last year, ran a wire feed welder and a media blast cabinet in one bay, and wanted a lift in the other so he could finish a ’68 pickup frame-off without spending three winters on a creeper. He called us before the concrete truck showed up, which is exactly the right order to do things in. Start With the Slab, Not the Lift Model
Every conversation about a restoration shop lift eventually collapses into one question: what’s under it? For most two-post lifts in the 10,000 to 12,000 lb class, manufacturers want a minimum of four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and most spec sheets call for four and a quarter or better once you get above 12,000 lb. Post-tension slabs are a hard no without engineering review. Fiber mesh alone doesn’t substitute for depth. And in a pole building, the slab often stops short of full thickness near the perimeter because the crew feathered it out toward the skirt board — which is precisely where people want to tuck a lift to keep the center bay open.
If your concrete is already poured, we’d rather you core a small test hole than guess. A one-inch core in an inconspicuous spot tells you thickness and gives you a look at aggregate quality for a couple hundred dollars of trouble. If it comes back thin, you have real options: a poured pad of 4×4 feet by six inches under each post, tied into the existing slab with epoxy dowels, is standard practice and we’ve supervised dozens. What you cannot do is anchor a two-post into three inches of driveway-grade concrete and hope. Anchor pull-out failures are the single ugliest thing we see in the field, and they never happen at a convenient moment. Get the slab right and the rest of the autolift garage build is straightforward carpentry and wiring.
Ceiling Height Math for Frame-Off Work
Restoration people underestimate vertical clearance more than any other group, because a bare frame on a lift sits low but a body on a rotisserie or a cab on jack stands on top of a 4-post runway does not. Standard clearfloor two-post lifts want roughly 12 feet of clear ceiling to the underside of the overhead beam, and the beam eats about 14 inches of that. If your shed has 12-foot sidewalls with a truss above, you may have more usable height in the center than at the wall — or none at all if there’s a purlin in the way. Baseplate models exist for exactly this reason and give up only the convenience of an unobstructed drive-through.
Then do the math on what you’re actually lifting. A crew-cab pickup on a two-post at full rise puts the roof around 11 feet off the floor. Add a light fixture hanging on a chain and you’ve found your ceiling with the truck. We tell customers in our region to plan for 13 to 14 feet of clear height if they’re building new and want a two-post that goes to full rise with a tall vehicle. If you’re stuck at 12, a mid-rise scissor or a low-profile 4-post gets you comfortable working height without the overhead structure. Nobody regrets the extra two feet of wall on a new build; plenty of people regret the two feet they saved.
Sequencing the Build So You’re Not Re-Doing Work
The right order is: decide the lift model, then pour, then wire, then install. That sounds obvious and it almost never happens. The most common sequence we actually encounter is: shed goes up, slab gets poured to whatever the concrete crew thought was fine, electrical gets roughed in at the panel wall, and then someone calls us in February asking where the lift can go. At that point we’re working around three fixed constraints instead of designing to one.
If you’re still in planning, mark the lift footprint on your floor plan before the concrete crew bids. Two-post lifts in the 10K class need roughly 12 to 13 feet of bay width post-to-post plus door swing room on either side, and you want at least three feet of walk space behind the vehicle for a transmission jack or an engine hoist. Restoration work multiplies floor traffic — parts carts, a bench, a rotisserie, the blast cabinet — so the bay that felt generous on paper gets tight fast. We also ask people to think about where the power unit lives, because a 2-post power unit mounted on the driver-side post is in the way if that’s your primary walk path. Planning an autolift garage on paper costs nothing; moving anchors costs a Saturday and a rented rotary hammer.
Power, Air, and the Stuff Behind the Wall
Most two-post and 4-post lifts in the home and light-commercial range come with a 220V single-phase power unit drawing on a 30-amp circuit, though some ship configured for 110V at reduced lift speed. In a farm shop with a 200-amp service you’re usually fine, but we’ve walked into buildings fed by a 60-amp subpanel off the house that were already running a welder, a compressor, and a heater. Add a lift and you’re tripping breakers mid-lift, which is exactly when you don’t want the motor to quit.
Put a dedicated circuit at the lift location and put the disconnect where you can reach it from the control side. Run conduit in the slab or overhead before drywall if you’re finishing the interior — chasing wire later in a metal building means either surface conduit or creative ceiling work. Air matters too: most two-posts use an air line for the lock release, and while you can operate them by pulling locks manually, nobody does that twice. Half-inch line to the lift, a drip leg, and a quick-connect at each post is the setup we recommend. For restoration work specifically, plan a second air drop for the blaster and a third for the DA sander, because sharing one line with the lift lock circuit gets annoying the first time the compressor cycles low. A well-planned autolift garage has more air outlets than you think you need.
Two-Post vs. Four-Post for Restoration and Storage
This is the fork in the road for almost every project we quote. A two-post gives you wheels-free access, which is what you want for suspension, brakes, exhaust, and any frame or floor pan work. A 4-post gives you drive-on convenience and doubles as vehicle storage, which matters if you’ve got a project car sitting for eighteen months and a daily driver that needs to park somewhere. Restoration guys generally want the two-post and then discover they also wanted the storage.
Our honest read: if the shop is 40 feet deep or better, do both eventually and start with whichever solves the immediate pain. If the frame-off is the priority and the car’s coming apart on stands anyway, buy the two-post first — a Rotary SPO12 or a Challenger 10,000 lb asymmetric handles anything a restoration shop will see. If you need to get two cars in a one-car footprint while you work on a third, the 4-post with a caster kit is more useful, because you can roll it out of the way and park it in a corner during welding season. For wheels-free work on a 4-post you’ll add a rolling bridge jack, which gets you most of the way there for suspension work but isn’t as comfortable as a true two-post for exhaust and floor pan fabrication. We’d rather help you pick once than sell you twice.
Anchoring, Shimming, and Getting It Plumb
Installation is where the difference between a lift that lasts twenty-five years and one that irritates you weekly gets decided. Anchors go in with a rotary hammer at the manufacturer’s specified diameter and depth — not close, exact — and get torqued to spec with a real torque wrench, then re-checked after the first few cycles. Pole building slabs are rarely dead level; two-post posts get shimmed with steel shim plates under the base so the posts sit plumb, and the shim stack can’t exceed what the manual allows without engineered support.
Then there’s the part people skip: setting the carriages even, running the equalization cables to correct tension, and cycling the lift empty through full travel several times to seat everything. Locks should engage on both columns at the same height and release together. If one side clicks a beat behind the other, the cable tension is off and it’ll wear the sheaves unevenly for the next decade. We check overhead cutoff bar function, we verify the arm restraints engage, and we test the lock release at working height with a vehicle on it. When we install a lift for a customer in western Illinois or anywhere in our service area, we leave a checklist behind with anchor torque values and a service interval. If you’re installing yourself, do the same for your own records — the next owner of that autolift garage will thank you, and so will your insurance carrier.
Budgeting, Lead Time, and What We’d Do Differently
Price tiers run roughly like this: entry-level 9,000 to 10,000 lb two-post lifts sit at the low end, mid-tier commercial-grade asymmetric units with better hardware and warranty land in the middle, and 4-post storage lifts with caster kits and drip trays come in slightly above the low-end two-posts once you add accessories. Installation is typically a fraction of the equipment cost for a straightforward job, more if we’re pouring pads or coring for a test. Freight to a rural address in western Illinois is real money and worth quoting before you commit, because a residential-delivery surcharge plus liftgate can add a meaningful chunk.
Lead times fluctuate. Common two-post models are usually in stock or a few weeks out; specialty configurations and inground work stretch longer. If your shed’s going up in spring, start the lift conversation in winter. The thing we’d tell every restoration builder to do differently: buy more capacity than your current project needs. The guy who bought a 9,000 lb lift for a Camaro inevitably buys a three-quarter-ton truck two years later and calls us about trading up. The incremental cost between 10K and 12K is small compared to replacing the whole unit.
