The Site Survey That Should Happen Before You Buy
Almost every problem we untangle in a home shop traces back to a purchase made before anyone measured. Our survey is not complicated. We check finished ceiling height at the lowest obstruction — not the peak, the lowest point, which in a post-frame building is usually the bottom of a truss chord, a light fixture, or a garage door track in the open position. We measure the slab, verify thickness where we can, and ask about the pour: age, reinforcement, control joint spacing, and whether there is a thickened footing along the perimeter. We look at where the electrical panel sits and how far a 220V circuit has to travel. And we walk the door approach, because a lift you cannot drive onto squarely is a lift you will resent.
In Cedar Falls, the building was 40 by 48 with what the owner believed was a four-inch slab. Two core checks told a different story: solid four inches through the middle bays, but a thin, ragged edge within about three feet of the overhead door where the pour had been feathered. Slab Requirements, Anchors, and Iowa Frost Realities
Concrete is the whole foundation of the conversation. Four-post storage lifts spread load across four columns and are more forgiving, which is one reason collectors gravitate toward them. But forgiving is not the same as unlimited — you still need a flat, sound slab and anchors that bite into real material, not into the crumbly top skin of a rushed finish.
Iowa adds its own wrinkle. Buildings that go up fast with a floating slab and no perimeter frost footing can move seasonally. We have seen shops where a two-post that was plumb in October needed shimming by April because one corner of the floor heaved. Choosing Between Storage and Service in One Bay
The collector’s stated goal was simple: park one car up, work on another below, and still be able to do real maintenance. Those two jobs pull in opposite directions. A four-post is the storage answer — drive on, no anchoring required in most cases, rock-solid parking, and casters if you want to reposition it. But a four-post puts runways under the tires, which means brake and suspension work requires rolling bridge jacks to get the wheels free. A two-post gives you open wheels and unobstructed underbody access, which is what you want for rotor swaps, but it is not designed for long-term vehicle storage and it eats a permanent footprint.
We laid out both options honestly. For a collector who mostly stores and occasionally services, a four-post with a rolling jack is the better long-term buy — it does 90 percent of what he wanted with none of the anchoring anxiety. For someone who wrenches every weekend and only stores seasonally, a two-post plus a set of jack stands makes more sense. He went four-post, 8,000 lb capacity, with a single rolling bridge jack. The deciding factor was not the lift at all; it was that he wanted a winter-storage solution first and a service tool second. Ceiling Height, Door Tracks, and the Overhead Problem
Ceiling height is where enthusiasm collides with arithmetic. To stack two vehicles you need the height of the bottom car, plus the runway or platform thickness, plus the height of the top car, plus a few inches of breathing room. A modern crossover is easily 68 to 72 inches tall. Two of them plus a runway assembly puts you well past 12 feet before you have parked anything comfortably. The Cedar Falls building had 14-foot sidewalls, which sounds generous until you account for the truss bottom chord and a run of conduit.
We also had to deal with the overhead door. In the open position, a standard-lift door track sits horizontally right where the lift wanted to be. Two fixes exist: relocate the lift out of the track’s swing, or convert the door to a high-lift or jackshaft opener that pulls the panels up closer to the ceiling. He chose the first, because it was free. Beyond that, we mapped lighting before install rather than after — nothing is more annoying than raising a car into a shop light. LED strips went between the truss bays, off the lift centerline. Radiant tube heaters, common in Iowa post-frame shops, need clearance too; a car roof rising toward a hot tube is a real hazard, not a theoretical one. Power, Air, and the Utilities Nobody Budgets For
The lift itself is the visible cost. The utilities to run it are the ones that surprise people. Most residential-duty lifts run a 220V single-phase motor and want a dedicated 20 or 30 amp circuit depending on the power unit. Running that circuit forty feet across a finished building, in conduit, with a disconnect near the lift, is real electrician work. Budget for it up front rather than discovering it the week the equipment arrives on a freight truck.
Air is the other one. Four-post lifts use an air-actuated lock release on most designs, and rolling bridge jacks are frequently air-over-hydraulic. That means you need a compressor and a line to the lift, not just a portable pancake unit in the corner. We suggest a hard air line run with a drop near the lift and a water separator inline, because Iowa humidity will put moisture in your air system and moisture will eventually foul a lock cylinder. Install Day and the First Brake Job
Install day on a four-post in a prepped building is a straightforward six to eight hours for our crew. Columns get positioned and squared, runways set, cables routed and tensioned, hydraulic lines connected, the power unit mounted and wired, then a full cycle test with locks verified at every position. We level the runways with shims, bleed the system, and cycle it loaded and unloaded. That last one gets ignored more than anything else on the list.
His first real job on it was a front rotor and pad replacement on a mid-2000s coupe. Maintenance, Inspection, and Getting Help in Iowa
