A mobile mechanic in the Sioux City area called us last spring because he was tired of pressing wheel bearings on a creeper in a gravel driveway, and he wanted a proper autolift garage set up in the 28×36 shop he’d just poured behind his house. He ran a good business out of a service van, but hub and bearing jobs were eating him alive — no way to get a car up high, no way to fight a seized knuckle with any leverage, and no way to work in February without losing feeling in his hands. What follows is that install, start to finish, including how the warranty on the lift is actually written and what filing a claim looks like when something goes sideways.

The Problem: Wheel Bearing Work Without a Lift

Wheel bearing and hub assembly service is one of those jobs that separates a real shop from a driveway operation. On late-model front-drive cars you’re fighting a press-fit hub in an aluminum knuckle, an axle nut torqued past 200 ft-lbs, and ABS wiring that snaps if you look at it wrong. Doing that on jack stands means you’re lying on your side swinging a hammer at an angle you can’t see. Our Sioux City customer had gotten decent at it, but each job was taking him nearly twice as long as it should, and he was turning down work because he couldn’t guarantee a timeline.

He also had a specific complaint we hear constantly: he couldn’t get the vehicle high enough to use a slide hammer or a bearing puller kit properly. Those tools need swing room. When the rotor face is 14 inches off the ground, you’re working in a box. Once he had the car at chest height on a two-post, the same hub job dropped to under an hour, and he could actually inspect the lower ball joint, the CV boot, and the brake hose at the same time — which is where the real money in a bearing job lives, because customers approve the work when they can see it. That’s the entire argument for building out an autolift garage instead of hauling a floor jack around.

Site Survey: What We Checked Before Quoting

Before we quoted anything, we asked for three numbers and a photo. Ceiling height at the lowest obstruction — not the peak, the lowest point, which is usually a truss chord, a garage door track, or a light fixture nobody thinks about. Slab thickness and age. And the door opening width, because a two-post needs the vehicle centered between the columns and a narrow door forces an awkward approach angle. His building had 12-foot sidewalls with an open truss, so overhead clearance wasn’t the constraint. The slab was six months old, four inches nominal, 3,000 PSI mix, no fiber, no rebar in the pad area.

Four inches at 3,000 PSI is the published minimum for most 10,000 lb two-post lifts, and it’s a minimum, not a target. We told him what we tell everybody: it will hold, but if he ever wanted to go heavier or if the pour was thin in spots, we’d rather cut and repour footing pads now than deal with an anchor pulling later. He opted for two 4×4-foot pads at 8 inches, which cost him a weekend and a couple bags of concrete. That decision is why his autolift garage still passes an anchor torque check two years in. We also confirmed his panel could support a 220V single-phase circuit at 30 amps, which it could, though he needed a new run and a disconnect near the column.

What We Installed and Why That Model

We put in an asymmetric two-post rated at 10,000 lbs — more capacity than the 7,000 lb range he’d originally asked about. That’s a deliberate recommendation, not an upsell. The vehicles rolling into a Sioux City shop are half three-quarter-ton pickups, and a loaded crew cab diesel gets close to 8,000 lbs before you add a topper and a toolbox. Buying at your current maximum leaves you nothing. Ten thousand pounds is the volume sweet spot in the industry, which means the columns, carriages, arms, and hydraulics are the most proven and the most-stocked parts on the shelf.

We chose asymmetric over symmetric because he works on cars more than trucks. Asymmetric columns are rotated and the arms are staggered so the vehicle sits farther back in the bay, which means driver and passenger doors open past the column. If you’ve ever tried to climb out of a sedan on a symmetric lift, you know why that matters — you either squeeze through a six-inch gap or you get in and out before you raise it. For a one-man operation doing bearing work, brakes, and general maintenance, asymmetric is almost always the right call. We also spec’d screw-pad adapters and a set of truck adapters so he could reach the pinch welds on unibody cars and the frame rails on trucks without stacking blocks, which is the single most common unsafe habit we see in a home autolift garage.

Install Day in the Autolift Garage

The install itself took our two-man crew most of a day. We laid out the bay centerline first, checked it against the door opening and the wall, then chalked column positions and drilled for the anchors. Anchor drilling is the step where corners get cut by people installing their own equipment — the hole has to be the right diameter, drilled to full depth, blown clean of dust, and the anchor has to be torqued to the manufacturer’s spec with a calibrated wrench. Dust in the hole is the number one cause of an anchor that reads correct at install and loosens six months later.

After the columns were plumbed and shimmed, we ran the overhead beam, set the equalization cables, plumbed the hydraulic lines, wired the power unit, and bled the system. Then we cycled the lift empty a dozen times, checked that both carriages arrived at the same height at every lock position, and load-tested with his own truck. We walked him through the safety lock release, the arm restraints, the correct lift points on the three vehicle types he sees most, and the daily and monthly inspection items. Before we left, we handed him the manual, the anchor torque values written on a card, and a photo log of the install — which turned out to matter later. A properly documented autolift garage install is the difference between a warranty claim that gets paid and one that gets argued about.

Warranty Coverage: What’s Actually Covered

Warranty language on lifts confuses almost everybody, so here’s the plain version. Most commercial-grade two-post lifts carry a structural warranty on the columns, carriages, and arms measured in years — often five, sometimes longer on the steel. Hydraulic and electrical components carry a shorter term, commonly one to two years, because they’re wear items with seals, brushes, and contactors. Cables, sheaves, lock dogs, rubber pads, and hoses are generally consumables and excluded once the initial period is up. That split isn’t a manufacturer being cheap; it reflects the fact that structure doesn’t wear out and pumps do.

What voids coverage is more important than what it covers. Improper installation is the big one — undersized or cracked concrete, wrong anchors, missing shims, out-of-spec anchor torque. Overloading is next; every lift has a per-arm rating in addition to a total rating, and lifting a truck with all the weight biased to one end can exceed the arm rating while staying under total capacity. Then there’s missed maintenance. If a manufacturer asks for an annual inspection and cable adjustment and you can’t show it was done, a cable claim gets tough. Modification is automatic denial: welding on a column, drilling a carriage, swapping in a non-OEM power unit. We tell every autolift garage owner to keep a one-page log in a drawer by the power unit. It takes thirty seconds a month and it settles arguments.

The Claim: How It Actually Went

About fourteen months in, our Sioux City customer noticed the passenger-side carriage was arriving roughly three-quarters of an inch low and the safety locks weren’t dropping into the same slot on both sides. He called us instead of trying to crank the cables himself, which was the right move. We drove up, measured, and found the equalization cable on that side had stretched beyond its adjustment range — not a wear failure, a manufacturing defect in the swage at the fitting. That’s covered.

The workflow from there is worth understanding, because it’s the same for any brand. We photographed the failed component, recorded the lift serial number and install date, pulled his maintenance log, and submitted the claim through the manufacturer’s distributor portal with our own install documentation attached. Because we were the installing dealer and had the original photo log, there was no back-and-forth about whether the anchors were right or whether the cable was misadjusted from day one. The replacement cable set shipped in under a week; we installed it, re-tensioned both sides, re-checked lock synchronization, and load-tested. His only cost was labor, and we discounted that because we’d sold and set the equipment. That’s the practical value of buying from a distributor who installs rather than a freight-drop website — a defect in a lift that came off a truck with no installer behind it becomes your problem, your paperwork, and your downtime. What This Install Cost Him and What We’d Change

Without quoting exact figures, here’s the honest shape of the budget. The lift itself, in commercial-grade 10,000 lb asymmetric, sits in the mid four-figure range for a quality name-brand unit. Professional installation with anchor certification and load testing runs in the high hundreds to low four figures depending on distance and site conditions. Electrical — a dedicated 220V circuit, disconnect, and conduit — was a few hundred through a local electrician. His footing repour was under two hundred in materials. Adapters, screw pads, and truck extensions added a couple hundred more. All in, he was in the mid-to-high four figures, and the equipment paid for itself in recovered labor hours inside the first year of bearing and brake work.

Two things we’d do differently. First, we’d have run the air line and a reel at the same time as the electrical, because he ended up trenching and drilling twice. Bundle the utilities. Second, we’d have pushed harder on lighting. He installed the lift under a single row of shop lights, and once a truck is at working height it throws a shadow over exactly the area you’re trying to see. LED strips on the walls at roughly six feet, aimed inward, fixed it for under a hundred dollars — but doing it after the lift was in meant working around the columns.
