The Waterloo Shop and What He Was Actually Trying to Do
The building was newer construction — 36 feet wide, 48 deep, 14-foot sidewalls, and a slab the builder had poured at five inches with fiber mesh. That last detail mattered more than anything else in the conversation. He owned two overland builds: a 3/4-ton diesel with a flatbed camper and a mid-size rig running 35s on a three-inch lift. Combined, those two vehicles ate his floor space, and neither one fit comfortably under a low-hanging garage door track. He wanted to park one and work on the other, and he wanted to be able to drop an oil pan without renting a bay somewhere.
Engine oil pan gasket work is the job that exposes every weakness in a home setup. You need consistent height for hours at a stretch, you need to get a drain pan and a jack under the vehicle without fighting a post, and you need enough clearance to pull the crossmember on some of these platforms. Ramps don’t give you that. A floor jack and stands technically will, but nobody enjoys spending a Saturday under 7,000 pounds of steel resting on four points of contact they set themselves. When we scoped his autolift garage project, the oil pan job became the benchmark we designed around — if the setup worked for that, it would work for brakes, exhaust, driveline, and everything else.
Why We Steered Him Toward a Four-Post Instead of a Two-Post
He came in wanting a two-post. Most people do, because that’s what they’ve seen at the tire shop. We talked him out of it, and here’s the honest reasoning. His slab was five inches of fiber-mesh concrete. A two-post concentrates the entire vehicle load into anchor bolts in two footprints, and the ALI-referenced standard most manufacturers publish is four inches of 3,000 PSI concrete minimum — but “minimum” and “comfortable” aren’t the same word when you’re hanging a loaded flatbed camper truck overhead. Fiber mesh isn’t rebar. We could have made it work with a core-out and repour, but that’s a real expense and a real delay.
The bigger factor was storage. He explicitly wanted to park one rig and work on the other, and a four-post does that natively. Drive on, raise it, roll the second vehicle underneath. No anchoring required — a four-post is a freestanding structure that distributes load across four base plates, and on his slab that was the safer engineering answer. He also runs 35s and a lifted suspension, which makes two-post arm placement genuinely annoying; you spend twenty minutes finding pinch weld pads that aren’t there anymore. Rolling jacks on a four-post solve wheels-free service when he needs it. For his particular autolift garage, four posts was simply the right tool.
Ceiling Height, Rig Height, and the Math That Actually Matters
Fourteen-foot sidewalls sound like plenty until you start stacking. Here’s how we ran the numbers with him standing in the shop with a tape measure. The 3/4-ton with the camper shell measured 82 inches at the tallest point. The mid-size rig on 35s measured 78 inches. A typical 9,000-pound-class four-post gives you somewhere in the neighborhood of 72 to 84 inches of lifting height depending on model and configuration, and the runways themselves sit a few inches off the deck at rest.
Do the arithmetic: 78-inch vehicle underneath, plus runway thickness, plus the stored vehicle’s 82-inch height, and you’re at roughly 13 feet 6 inches before you account for the lift’s own overhead structure. That’s tight in a 14-foot building, and it left no room for a hoist or a light fixture where he’d planned one. We solved it by specifying a taller-column configuration and moving the lift to a bay where the trusses gave him an extra eight inches of clear height, then relocating two of his LED fixtures. This is the single most common thing people get wrong when they plan an autolift garage — they measure the ceiling and forget that the vehicle on top has height too. Measure both rigs, measure the actual clear height under the lowest obstruction, and add four inches of slop.
Brand History: Why We Sell What We Sell
Customers ask us constantly why we push certain brands. It isn’t a distribution contract talking. On the commercial side we lead with Rotary and Challenger because both have manufacturing history measured in decades and, critically, both maintain parts availability on equipment that’s twenty and thirty years old. Four-post lifts wear cables — they’re the primary consumable, and on a unit that cycles daily you’re looking at inspection annually and replacement somewhere in the five-to-ten-year window depending on duty and environment. Sheaves wear. Slack-cable safety switches gum up. Hydraulic cylinders eventually weep at the seal.

Installation Day: Anchors, Levels, and the Oil Pan Test
The install itself took our two-man crew most of a day. Four-post lifts don’t require concrete anchors for structural hold the way a two-post does, but we still shim and level each base plate meticulously, because a four-post that isn’t level will bind in the columns and wear cables unevenly on one corner. Every slab has a slope — his was pitched toward the overhead door for drainage, which is correct construction practice and slightly annoying for lift setup. We shimmed the two downhill posts and checked runway level across the diagonal.
Then we ran cables, set the hydraulic lines, bled the system, and cycled it a dozen times empty before putting weight on it. We check that all four locks engage simultaneously — audible, all four, every time. If one latch lags, something’s out of adjustment and we fix it before we leave. Once it passed, he drove the diesel on and we ran it to full height, then dropped it onto locks and left it sitting for twenty minutes while we cleaned up. No creep, no drift. He did his first oil pan gasket job the following weekend and sent us a photo of the underside with a work light clamped to a runway. Add rolling jacks, drip trays, casters, and a jack tray and you’re adding a meaningful percentage on top — those accessories are what turn a storage lift into a service lift, and we’d argue rolling jacks are non-optional if you plan on brake or suspension work.
Freight on a lift is real money because it’s a heavy, oversized LTL shipment. Installation runs a separate line depending on travel distance from Ames and whether we’re dealing with concrete work.
