A tire and alignment shop owner in Davenport called us last spring because his newest tech refused to work under one of the bays, and honestly, the kid was right. The autolift garage layout he’d inherited when he bought the building had two columns anchored into a slab nobody could document, arms that drifted under load, and a gold ALI label on one post that turned out to belong to a completely different machine. He was doing CV axle and half-shaft replacements all day long — work that puts a tech’s head and shoulders directly under a raised vehicle for twenty minutes at a stretch. We drove east, put eyes on it, and walked the whole shop with him. This article is that walkthrough, written out.

What ALI Gold Certification Actually Certifies
The gold label confuses people, so let’s be precise. The Automotive Lift Institute runs a third-party certification program administered through an accredited lab. A lift model that carries the gold label has been physically tested to the ANSI/ALI ALCTV standard — structural load testing well above rated capacity, load-holding device verification, control and electrical checks, and a review of the installation and operation manuals that ship with it. The manufacturer’s plant is also audited on an ongoing basis. That last part matters more than most buyers realize, because it means the certification is a living thing, not a one-time trophy.
Here’s what it does not certify: your floor, your anchors, your installer, or your maintenance habits. We’ve seen a properly certified Rotary SPOA10 turned into a hazard by a slab that was four inches of unreinforced concrete over sand. The label on the column says the equipment left the factory correct. Everything after that is on the shop. When we evaluate an autolift garage, we treat the gold label as the starting line — the minimum condition for a conversation — and then spend our real time on the slab, the anchor torque, the arm restraints, and the cable or chain equalization. A shop that buys certified equipment and then skips every inspection has bought a false sense of security, and that is arguably more dangerous than knowing your lift is questionable.
Reading the Label on Equipment You Inherited
The Davenport shop is a common story. Somebody buys an existing building, the lifts come with it, and there is no paperwork anywhere. Start by finding the serial plate — usually on the power-side column, sometimes on the inside face where it’s been painted over three times. Write down the manufacturer, model number, serial, and rated capacity. Then find the ALI label if there is one, and check that the model number on the label matches the model number on the serial plate. On that Davenport job it didn’t, which told us somebody had swapped a column or scavenged parts from a second machine.
Next, look up the model against the ALI directory of certified lifts. If the model isn’t listed, that doesn’t automatically mean the equipment is unsafe — plenty of older, well-built lifts predate the current program — but it does mean you’re now responsible for demonstrating it’s fit for service. In an autolift garage running production work, we generally recommend an annual inspection by a qualified lift inspector regardless of label status, and we’ll document what we find in writing. Insurance carriers increasingly ask for that documentation, and after an incident it’s the first thing anyone requests. Keep the manual too. If it’s gone, we can usually get you a replacement PDF from the manufacturer.
Why CV Axle Work Raises the Stakes
Half-shaft and CV axle replacement is not a quick brake job. The tech is under the vehicle for a long stretch, often with a pry bar, sometimes with a slide hammer, and always applying lateral force to a component bolted to the vehicle he’s standing beneath. That lateral input is exactly what exposes a lift with worn arm restraints or a sloppy carriage. A vehicle that shifts a quarter inch on the pads while somebody is hammering an inner joint out of a transaxle is how people get hurt.
For this work we push shops toward two things. First, arm restraint gears that actually engage — pull each arm side to side at height and feel for movement. Worn restraints are a common and cheap fix, and we stock the gear and pin kits for most Rotary and Challenger models. Second, adequate lift height so the tech isn’t crouching. A cramped stance means less control over the tools, and less control means more force in unpredictable directions. If your ceiling allows it, a taller column with more rise transforms the ergonomics of a shop doing driveline work daily. We also tell techs to set the lift down onto the mechanical locks before ever putting a pry bar to an axle. Hydraulic pressure holds a vehicle; steel locks hold it when something goes wrong with the hydraulics.
The Slab Is the Part Nobody Inspects
Every two-post lift transfers the entire vehicle load into two small anchor patterns in your concrete. The manufacturer specifies minimum slab thickness and compressive strength — typically four to six inches of 3,000 PSI or better, depending on model and capacity, with minimum edge distances from joints and trenches. Most Iowa shop buildings from the 1970s and 80s do not meet that spec, and nobody knew until we cored a test hole.
We core rather than guess. It takes twenty minutes and tells you whether you’re anchoring into structural concrete or into a topping slab over fill. If the slab is short, the fix is a poured pad — cut out a section, dig down, tie in rebar, and place new concrete to the manufacturer’s spec. It adds cost and a cure delay of a week or more, but it’s the difference between a lift that stays put and one that walks under load. We’ve also found trenches, radiant heat tubing, and buried drain lines exactly where anchors needed to go, which is why we scan before we drill. In a working autolift garage, discovering a heat line with a hammer drill is a very expensive afternoon. Anchor torque matters too: check it after the first week of use and annually after that, because concrete relaxes around wedge anchors as they seat.
A Daily and Monthly Inspection Routine That Sticks
Written inspection programs fail because they’re too long. The ones that survive in a real shop fit on an index card. Daily, before the first vehicle: walk both columns, look for hydraulic weeping at the cylinder and fittings, confirm the lock mechanism audibly clicks on the way up, and check that the arm restraints drop into place. Thirty seconds, done by whoever opens.
Monthly, take fifteen minutes. Grease the carriage slide blocks or check them for wear. Inspect equalization cables or chains for broken strands, kinks, and correct tension — a cable that’s stretched unevenly means one carriage is carrying more than its share. Check anchor bolt torque with a wrench, not by eye. Look at the pad rubbers; cracked or missing pads let steel touch pinch welds and create slip risk. Inspect the overhead shutoff bar on overhead-style units, and cycle the lift full travel unloaded, listening for anything that changed since last month. Log it. A composition notebook on a shelf by the compressor is a perfectly adequate record. Annually, bring in a qualified inspector. We do this work throughout Iowa and Illinois, and we’d rather find a stretched cable during a scheduled visit than get a Saturday call from a shop with a vehicle stuck at eight feet. Buying New: What to Insist On
If you’re replacing questionable equipment, spec the new lift around the work you actually do, not the work you might do someday. A tire and alignment shop doing CV axles, brakes, and suspension is well served by a 10,000 to 12,000 lb clearfloor two-post with three-stage front arms. Clearfloor keeps the bay open for alignment racks and floor jacks; three-stage arms reach the pickup points on both a Civic and a half-ton. Confirm the model is currently ALI Gold certified before you sign anything, and confirm your ceiling height supports the column and, on overhead models, the crossbar.
Ask about installation specifically. Plenty of online sellers ship a lift to your curb on a semi and wish you luck. We deliver, set, anchor, shim to level, fill and bleed the hydraulics, cycle and adjust the locks, and hand you a signed installation record. That record is part of what makes an autolift garage defensible if anything ever goes sideways. We also register the equipment with the manufacturer so warranty claims don’t turn into a paperwork fight two years down the road. And we stock parts — cables, cylinders, lock assemblies, arm restraint kits, pads — for Rotary, Challenger, BendPak, and most legacy brands, so a down bay is a same-week problem and not a six-week one. Getting a Bay Evaluated Before You Commit
The Davenport shop ended up replacing one lift and keeping the other after we re-anchored it, replaced both arm restraint assemblies, and swapped a weeping cylinder seal. That’s typical. Most of the time an autolift garage doesn’t need a full teardown — it needs somebody to look at it honestly and separate the genuine problems from the cosmetic ones. We’re not interested in selling you two new lifts when one repair and one replacement gets you where you need to be.
What we ask for before a site visit is simple: photos of each column and serial plate, your ceiling height, your slab age if you know it, and a description of the heaviest vehicle you service.
