A city public works director in northeast Iowa emailed us in the middle of a February cold snap because his crew had been changing oil on pickups and one-ton service trucks by crawling on a cold shop floor for eleven years, and the county had finally freed up money for a lift. His first question was not about brands. It was whether the slab in a 1970s municipal garage could take one at all. That is the right first question, and it is the one we ask before anything else on every autolift garage project we walk. Steel and hydraulics are the easy part. Concrete is what actually holds a vehicle over a technician’s head, and concrete is what most buyers never check.

Step One: Find Out What Your Slab Actually Is
Nobody knows their slab thickness. Building plans get lost, additions get poured to different specs, and the section under the wash bay is almost never the same as the section by the overhead door. We core-drill or use a rotary hammer test hole in the exact spot the columns will land, because a measurement 15 feet away is a guess. In older municipal shops in northeast Iowa we routinely find 4 inches where the drawings claimed 6, and we occasionally find 8 inches with heavy mesh because the original building housed a road grader.
Most commercial two-post lifts require a minimum of 4 inches of 3,000 PSI concrete, and many 12,000 lb and larger models want 6 inches or more. Those minimums assume the concrete is sound, fully cured, and not sitting on soft fill. A 4-inch slab poured over unconsolidated dirt is worse than a 3.5-inch slab over compacted base. We also check for cracking patterns, because a slab that has already heaved tells you the subgrade moves seasonally. That matters in Iowa, where frost gets deep. If the test hole comes back thin, we do not walk away from the project — we change the approach. That is the whole point of doing this before you order equipment for an autolift garage instead of after the freight truck arrives.
Rebar, Mesh, and What They Do for a Lift Anchor
Reinforcement does not carry the anchor load directly. A wedge anchor or an adhesive anchor gets its capacity from friction and bearing against the concrete inside the hole. What rebar does is keep the slab from cracking apart under the concentrated point load at the column base, and that is genuinely important. A 6-inch slab with #4 rebar on 18-inch centers behaves like a structural element. A 6-inch slab with nothing in it behaves like a stack of tiles waiting to find a crack line.
Here is the practical wrinkle: rebar in the wrong place ruins your anchor hole. When we drill and hit steel 3 inches down, we cannot just move over 4 inches, because anchor spacing and the distance from the column edge are fixed by the manufacturer. We use a rebar scanner before drilling on any reinforced pour so we can shift the whole column footprint an inch or two and thread between bars. For new construction, we give the concrete contractor the anchor pattern in advance so the mat can be laid out around it. When the Slab Is Too Thin: Three Honest Options
The northeast Iowa city shop came back at 4 inches with light mesh and one visible crack running diagonally through the intended bay. We gave them three options and no sales pressure on any of them. Option one: cut out a section of slab, excavate, compact, and pour a properly reinforced pad at 8 to 10 inches with dowels tied into the existing floor. That is the gold standard and it is a two-to-three day job with cure time before anchors go in.
Option two: choose a four-post runway lift instead of a two-post. A four-post distributes the same vehicle weight across eight base plates instead of four, and the per-anchor load drops substantially. For a fleet shop doing oil changes and fluid service on pickups, a four-post is arguably the better tool anyway — drive on, chock, raise, work. Option three: go with a portable mid-rise or a mobile column set that requires no anchoring at all, accepting the tradeoff in working height. The city chose the four-post plus a modest 6-inch reinforced pad under the runway ends, which was the cost-effective middle path. The lesson for anyone planning an autolift garage on an older floor is that a thin slab narrows your choices but almost never eliminates them. It just needs to be discovered in the planning phase rather than on install day with a crew standing around.
Anchor Installation Is Where Safety Is Won or Lost
We have been called to inspect lifts where the installer used the wrong anchor length, skipped the required embedment, never vacuumed the hole, or torqued to feel instead of to spec. Every one of those is a latent failure. Anchor holes must be drilled to the correct diameter and depth, cleaned of dust so the wedge can bite, driven so the specified number of threads remain above the base plate, and torqued to the manufacturer’s stated value with a calibrated wrench. Shims under a base plate are allowed only up to the manufacturer’s limit, and only full-width shims — not a stack of washers in one corner.
Then you load test. We raise the lift empty through full travel, check lock engagement at every position, lower it, put the heaviest vehicle on site on it, and re-check torque on all anchors after that first loaded cycle. Anchors seat and settle, and the re-torque catches it. In a municipal autolift garage where a dozen different employees will use the equipment, we also do a hands-on orientation: where the lock release is, what the lock clicks should sound like, how to set arm restraints, and why you never leave a vehicle at an unlocked height. Documentation goes in the shop binder with the load test results. Public entities get audited, and a written record of a proper install and load test is worth having. Oil Changes and Fluid Service: Designing the Workflow
A fleet shop doing high-volume oil and fluid service has different needs than a diagnostic bay. The vehicle goes up, a drain plug comes out, a filter comes off, fluid goes into a catch, and the vehicle comes down — often three or four times an hour during a maintenance push. Cycle time matters, and so does drainage. We recommend positioning the lift so the drain path and the used-oil tank are on the same side, ideally with a dedicated evacuation drain or a low catch cart that rolls under a raised runway without fighting a column.
For four-post installs we push customers toward open-center runways or a rolling bridge jack setup so a tech can reach the drain plug and the filter without leaning around structure. Lighting is underrated: a fleet shop working under a truck at 5 feet needs dedicated overhead or under-runway lighting, not the ambient fixtures 14 feet up. We also strongly suggest a spill containment mat under the working area, because a municipal shop with a floor drain has environmental reporting obligations that a private garage does not. None of this is exotic, but it is the difference between a bay that saves an hour a day and one that just relocates the awkwardness upward. Cold-Weather Realities in a Northeast Iowa Shop
Unheated or intermittently heated bays are common in municipal buildings, and cold changes how hydraulic equipment behaves. Standard lift fluid thickens below freezing, which makes the pump work harder and slows the rise. We spec a cold-weather-rated hydraulic fluid or an ISO 22 grade for shops that let temperatures drop overnight, and we tell crews to cycle the lift once without a load in the morning to warm the fluid before putting a truck on it. That thirty seconds saves pump motors.
Salt is the other winter enemy. Brine drips off every fleet truck onto columns, base plates, anchors, and cable sheaves. We have pulled lock assemblies out of northeast Iowa shops where the pawl was frozen in place by corrosion, which means the safety system was not going to catch anything. Wash the columns down periodically, keep the lock and cable areas clean and lubricated, and inspect base plates for rust jacking under the plate edge. A quarterly wipe-down and lube routine costs a technician twenty minutes and adds years of service life. What a Fleet Manager Should Do Next
Start with three measurements and one phone call. Measure ceiling height to the lowest obstruction — sprinkler head, heater tube, door track, whatever hangs lowest. Measure bay width between obstructions and bay depth from door to back wall. Then find out your slab thickness with a test hole, or have us do it. With those numbers, a real recommendation takes about ten minutes instead of three weeks of catalog browsing.
Be honest about your heaviest vehicle and how often it comes in. A shop that services one-ton service bodies and the occasional dump truck front end needs different capacity than a shop doing squad cars and half-tons. Overbuying capacity is a small waste of money. Underbuying is a safety incident.
