Building out an autolift garage for RV and trailer work is a different animal than outfitting a general repair bay, and a shop in the West Des Moines area learned that the hard way before they ever called us. They had been quoted a lift by a catalog salesman who never asked what a Class A motorhome weighs, never asked how long their bays were, and never asked whether they planned to pull differential covers on dually axles at chest height. We spent an afternoon walking the building with a tape measure and a spec sheet, and what follows is essentially the first year of that project — model number comparisons, the install, the first real differential fluid service, and the things nobody warns you about until you own the equipment.

Why Spec Sheets Beat Sales Pitches

The first thing we told this shop was to stop shopping by price and start shopping by four numbers: rated capacity, overall length, drive-through width, and minimum ceiling requirement. Every reputable manufacturer publishes those figures, and every one of them is a hard constraint that no amount of clever installation will bend. A 14,000 lb four-post with 172-inch runways sounds enormous until you park a 24-foot travel trailer on it and discover the tongue is hanging over the approach ramps. Conversely, a shop that buys the longest runway on the market and then can’t open its overhead door with a vehicle raised has wasted real money on capability it can’t reach.

We built a simple comparison table for them on a legal pad. On one side, the Rotary four-post options with extended runways and the capacity headroom to handle a loaded dual-axle trailer. On the other, a Challenger commercial model with a lower overall height that fit under their 14-foot trusses without modification. Both were legitimate answers. The deciding factor turned out to be something not printed on any brochure: the concrete. Their slab was a good pour, but the section nearest the overhead door had been patched years earlier, and we weren’t going to anchor a lift into a patch. That single observation moved the whole layout eight feet north and changed which model fit. Spec sheets get you close; a site visit gets you right.

Sizing an Autolift Garage for RV and Trailer Work

RV and trailer service breaks most of the assumptions built into automotive lift marketing. A passenger car is roughly 15 feet long, weighs under 5,000 lb, and has a predictable center of gravity. A fifth-wheel toy hauler is none of those things. Weight distribution shifts dramatically depending on whether the fresh water tank is full, whether the generator is mounted forward, and whether somebody left a motorcycle strapped in the back. When we spec an autolift garage for this kind of work, we assume the customer will eventually put something on it that we didn’t plan for, and we build in margin.

For this West Des Moines shop that meant a capacity rating well above their stated maximum and runways long enough to support both axles of a tandem trailer without the rear wheels hanging past the end. We also pushed hard for rolling jack compatibility. On a four-post, you cannot service suspension, brakes, or wheel bearings without a way to get the tires off the runway, and retrofitting jacks later is always more expensive than ordering them with the lift. The other spec line that mattered was column placement relative to their air drops and lighting. We moved two overhead lights before the lift ever arrived, which cost an afternoon of electrician time and saved them from squinting into a dark differential housing every week for the next decade. Small decisions made early tend to compound.

Install Week: Concrete, Anchors, and Power

Installation took two days, which is typical for a four-post of this size with rolling jacks and an extended runway package. Day one was layout, unloading, and column placement. Day two was runway assembly, cable routing, hydraulic connection, power hookup, and the shakedown cycles. We ran the lift up and down unloaded a dozen times, then with a shop truck, then with a loaded trailer, checking cable tension and equalization at each stage. A four-post that isn’t equalized will let one corner sag over time, and catching it during commissioning is far cheaper than catching it in year three.

Concrete was the item we watched most closely. Their slab measured just over five inches with decent aggregate, which is workable, but we cored a test hole first rather than trusting a claim from the builder. Anchor embedment matters more than most owners realize — a lift is only as strong as the six inches of concrete holding its base plate down. On power, the shop had 240-volt single phase available, which handled the power unit fine, though we told them a dedicated circuit was non-negotiable. Sharing a circuit with a compressor is how you cook a motor. If you are planning an autolift garage build from scratch, run the electrical before the slab goes in and you will save yourself a surface-mounted conduit run that you will look at with mild irritation forever.

The First Differential Fluid Service

About six weeks after install, they pulled in a dually service truck with a rear differential that hadn’t been touched in 90,000 miles. This was the first real test of the layout, and it went about as well as anyone could hope. With the truck up at working height, the tech stood flat-footed under the axle with the drain pan on a rolling cart, cracked the cover, and let it drain without a single awkward reach. On a two-post, the same job would have meant working around swing arms; on jack stands, it would have meant lying on the floor with a pan on his chest.

The detail that made the difference was height. They had specified a lift that raised high enough for a six-foot-two technician to work under a truck with a 34-inch differential centerline without ducking. That sounds like a luxury until you do the job four times a week. The other thing they discovered was that a four-post makes fluid services genuinely cleaner. The runways catch the inevitable drips instead of the floor, and the rolling jacks let them lift one axle for gear-pattern checks without repositioning the whole vehicle. Differential service is not glamorous work, but it is steady revenue in a market full of tow vehicles and service trucks, and an autolift garage laid out with that job in mind pays for itself faster than one built around generic assumptions about what will roll through the door.

Comparing Model Numbers Without Getting Lost

Manufacturer model numbers look like alphabet soup until you learn the pattern, and once you do, comparison shopping gets a lot faster. Most brands encode capacity and configuration directly into the designation — the digits often reference thousands of pounds, and the letters typically flag whether the unit is a two-post, four-post, symmetric, asymmetric, or an open-front variant. Rotary and Challenger both follow reasonably logical conventions in their commercial lines. Once you know that, you can scan a page of options and eliminate two-thirds of them in about a minute.

What you cannot read from a model number is the stuff that determines whether you will still like the lift in year five. Cable quality and routing geometry vary between manufacturers even at identical capacity ratings. Lock mechanisms differ in how much noise they make and how easily they can be adjusted. Power unit brands vary, and so does the availability of replacement seals and solenoids five years down the road. We steer customers toward brands we can actually get parts for, because a lift with a discontinued power unit becomes a very expensive piece of shop furniture. What the First Year Actually Cost

Nobody likes vague answers about money, so here is an honest framing without pretending every shop’s numbers are the same. The lift itself, in the commercial four-post class with extended runways and rolling jacks, landed in the mid-to-upper range for that category. Installation added a meaningful but not shocking amount — figure a couple thousand for a straightforward two-day install with good concrete and accessible power. Then there were the items nobody budgets: the electrical work to add a dedicated circuit, the lighting relocation, a set of taller jack adapters for high-clearance trucks, and a drip tray they decided they wanted after the third messy job.

Year-one maintenance costs were minimal, which is normal. Cable tension check, a lock function inspection, hydraulic fluid top-off, and a visual on the anchor bolts. We recommend an annual inspection, and for a shop running commercial volume that is not optional — it is a liability and insurance question as much as a mechanical one. The bigger financial story was on the revenue side. Being able to take RV and trailer work that competitors turned away because they had nowhere to put it changed the mix of jobs coming through the door. That is the argument for buying the right spec the first time rather than the cheapest thing that technically lifts. Lessons We’d Pass Along to the Next Shop

Measure your building before you shop, not after. We have shown up to installs where the lift was already sitting in crates and the ceiling was three inches too low for the specified rise. That situation has no good outcome — you either eat a restocking fee or you own a lift you can only raise partway. Take fifteen minutes with a tape measure and write down ceiling height at the lowest obstruction, door opening height, slab thickness if you know it, and the distance from your planned lift centerline to the nearest wall and to the next bay.

Second, buy for the job you want in three years, not the job you have today. This shop’s original plan was passenger cars and light trucks; within a year they were doing trailer axle work and motorhome undercarriage inspections because they were the only place in the area set up for it. Third, get the accessories with the lift. Rolling jacks, drip trays, jack adapters, and caster kits all cost more as afterthoughts. Fourth, keep the manual. Sounds trivial, but when a lock solenoid quits at 4 p.m. on a Friday, having the part number in hand cuts the repair from days to hours.
