An autolift garage is one of the few pieces of shop equipment that will outlive the building’s roof if you treat it right, and we say that as the crew that installs and services this equipment across Iowa every week. A couple of winters back we set a pair of two-post lifts in a small RV and trailer service shop in southwest Iowa. The owner had been doing oil changes and fluid service on motorhomes, fifth-wheel running gear, and the occasional tow vehicle on jack stands and ramps for eleven years. He asked us a fair question before he signed anything: what is this going to cost me over twenty years, not over twenty minutes? This article is our honest answer, built from his first year of ownership.

Year Zero: The Install Line Item Nobody Budgets For
The purchase price of the lift is the number everybody fixates on, and it is usually the smaller half of the story in the first year. This shop’s building was a 40×60 steel structure with a six-inch slab poured in two pours — which sounds fine until you find out where the cold joint runs. We core-tested before we anchored, because a two-post lift transfers everything it lifts into a few square feet of concrete. He needed a partial saw-cut and repour under one column, and that was a real cost he had not planned for. It is also the cheapest money he spent all year, because the alternative is anchor pullout three years in.
Then there’s power and air. Most single-vehicle setups run a 208-230V single-phase circuit, and running that circuit thirty feet across a shop with conduit and a disconnect adds up. Add freight, a lift-gate delivery if you don’t have a forklift, and an overhead run for the equalization cable if you go with a clear-floor model. Our rule of thumb for anybody planning an autolift garage in Iowa: budget the equipment, then add roughly fifteen to thirty percent for install, electrical, and concrete work. If your slab is new and thick and your panel has capacity, you’ll land at the low end. If you’re retrofitting a 1970s pole building with a four-inch floor, you’ll be at the high end and you’ll be glad you knew that in March instead of finding out in October.
Months One Through Three: Oil Changes and Fluid Service Change First
The first thing the owner noticed was not speed. It was his back. Fluid service on a Class C motorhome chassis had meant crawling under on a creeper with a drain pan balanced on his chest, and he’d been doing four or five of those a week. On the lift, the same job happens standing up at shoulder height with a lube caddy under the pan and both hands free. His logged time on a straightforward oil and filter service went from about fifty minutes to about twenty-five, and — this matters more than the clock — he stopped skipping the walkaround inspection. When you’re already standing under the vehicle with good light, you look at the driveshaft, the exhaust hangers, and the leaf spring bushings.
That inspection habit turned into revenue inside the first quarter. He found a weeping rear axle seal on a towable trailer and two rotted brake lines on a tow vehicle, both of which became work orders he never would have written before. That is the part of the return that spreadsheets miss. An autolift garage does not just make existing jobs faster; it makes you see the jobs that were always there. He also stopped turning away chassis work he used to send down the road because it required real undercar access. Over three months that added enough billable hours that the monthly payment on the equipment stopped feeling like a payment and started feeling like overhead he’d have paid anyway.
The Wear Items: What You Actually Replace and When
Twenty-year cost of ownership on a lift comes down to a short list of consumables, and none of them are exotic. On a two-post, the equalization cables are the headline item. Under normal shop duty they run somewhere in the eight-to-twelve-year range before the strands start to bird-cage near the sheaves, and in a dusty or salty environment — which is every Iowa shop between November and April — you plan closer to eight. Sheaves and their bushings go with the cables, because putting new cable over a grooved sheave is throwing money away. Slider blocks on the carriages wear steadily and cost almost nothing; ignore them and you’ll be chasing carriage slop and cable tracking issues instead.
The hydraulic side is simpler than people expect. Cylinder seal kits are the main event, and a well-installed cylinder that isn’t side-loaded often goes a decade or more before it starts weeping past the rod seal. Power unit motors last a long time; pumps and reservoirs occasionally need attention if somebody let the fluid get contaminated. Arm restraint gears, lock pawls, and latch springs are cheap and get replaced during annual inspection. Spread across twenty years, a well-maintained autolift garage setup typically eats a few hundred dollars a year in wear parts on average — with one or two bigger years when cables and seals come due at the same time. Annual Inspection: The Cheapest Insurance in the Building
ANSI/ALI ALOIM calls for a qualified annual inspection on every lift in commercial service, and every insurance carrier we’ve dealt with in Iowa cares about it whether they say so up front or not. This shop put us on the calendar in the same week every February. The inspection is not a formality: we cycle the lift, check lock engagement at every position, measure cable tension and equalization, look for elongation at the anchor bolts, torque-check anchors to spec, inspect the arm restraints, check the hydraulic circuit for weeping, and verify the overhead shutoff or automatic lock release actually works.
What that buys you over twenty years is nothing dramatic — which is the point. On his first inspection we caught two anchors that had lost torque during the first year of settling and one arm restraint gear that was starting to skip a tooth. Both were ten-minute fixes. Left alone for another year, the restraint would have let an arm swing under load, and that is how vehicles come off lifts. The annual inspection also gives you a written record, which matters if you ever sell the shop or file a claim. Cost-wise, an annual inspection on a single lift is one of the smallest line items in an autolift garage budget and it is the one we’d tell you never to skip. If you’ve got three or four lifts, we do them in one visit and the per-lift number drops.
Downtime Is the Real Expense
Ask any shop owner what a broken lift costs and the honest answer isn’t the repair invoice. It’s the bay sitting empty. This RV shop runs two bays. If one lift goes down in July, half his capacity disappears during his busiest month, and the customers he reschedules don’t always come back. We’ve watched shops lose more money in four days of waiting on a cable set than they’d spend on a decade of preventive maintenance.
That’s the argument for two things: buying a brand with real parts availability, and buying from somebody who stocks. There are lifts on the market at attractive prices from importers who vanish, rebrand, or simply can’t tell you what cylinder is in your own equipment three years later. We field those calls constantly — somebody with an orphaned lift, no serial plate data, and a cylinder nobody makes. Sometimes we can cross-reference it and get them running. Sometimes we can’t, and the honest answer is that the lift is scrap. When you’re pricing an autolift garage on a twenty-year horizon, factor in whether the brand will still exist and whether anybody within 300 miles carries the wear parts. Twenty-Year Math: Where the Money Actually Goes
Here’s how we lay it out for owners who want the whole picture. Over two decades, the initial equipment purchase typically accounts for roughly half to two-thirds of total lifetime spend on a well-chosen commercial two-post. Install, concrete, and electrical are a one-time chunk in year zero. Annual inspections are a small, predictable recurring cost. Wear parts — cables, sheaves, slider blocks, seal kits, latch hardware — come in lumps around years eight to ten and again around years sixteen to eighteen. Hydraulic fluid changes are trivial. If nothing gets abused, that’s the whole list.
Where the math goes sideways is neglect and misuse. Overloading, side-loading from bad arm placement, and running a lift with a bad lock all cause damage that isn’t a wear item — it’s a structural repair or a replacement. We’ve replaced columns that were bent because somebody lifted a loaded box truck on a 10,000 lb lift. That single decision cost more than twenty years of maintenance would have. The other sideways scenario is buying too small. A shop that outgrows its capacity in year six ends up buying twice, and a second purchase erases every dollar the cheaper first lift saved. Buy for the heaviest thing you’ll realistically service in a decade, not the heaviest thing on the lot today. For most RV and trailer service work, that means looking hard at 12,000 to 15,000 lb capacity rather than a 9,000.
What We’d Tell You Before You Sign Anything
The southwest Iowa shop we’ve been describing is now past its first year and the owner’s summary was short: he wished he’d done it five years earlier and he wished he’d gone one capacity step up. That’s the most common pair of regrets we hear, and both are avoidable. Before you order, get three numbers nailed down: your usable ceiling height under the lowest obstruction, your slab thickness and rebar situation, and your available electrical service at the panel. Those three numbers determine which lifts are even candidates. Everything else is preference.
Then think about the twenty-year picture honestly. An autolift garage bought on price alone with no parts pipeline behind it will cost more by year twelve than a better lift bought right.
