The question we get more than any other from guys building an autolift garage is whether to buy used or new. It usually comes up the same way it did with an overlanding builder we worked with in east-central Iowa: he had a 4Runner with a weeping oil pan gasket, a Craigslist ad for a fifteen-year-old two-post two counties over, and a quote from us for a new one. The used unit was less than half the price. He called to ask if we would install it. What followed was a forty-minute phone conversation about what he was actually buying, what it would cost to make it safe, and what happens when a used lift’s manufacturer no longer exists. The Job That Started It: An Oil Pan Gasket on a Built 4Runner
Oil pan gasket work is the perfect argument for a lift and a terrible job to attempt on stands. On most modern V6 and V8 platforms the pan will not clear the crossmember or the front differential without dropping something. On a solid-axle or IFS four-wheel-drive with a skid plate package and a two-inch lift, you are removing skids, unbolting the sway bar, sometimes supporting the engine from above and lowering the subframe an inch. That is a multi-hour job with the vehicle in the air the entire time, and every one of those steps involves torque you cannot apply comfortably lying down.
This customer had done it once already on ramps and a pair of stands. Took him a weekend and a half, and the gasket started weeping again within four months because he never got clean torque on the pan bolts in the right sequence — he simply could not reach the rear ones properly. That failure was the whole reason he started pricing lifts. He was not chasing convenience; he was chasing a job he could actually do correctly. That is the right reason to build an autolift garage, and it changes the used-versus-new calculation, because a lift you have to nurse and second-guess does not give you the confident access that made you want one in the first place.
What a Used Lift Actually Costs Once You Add It Up
The listing price on a used two-post is never the real price. Start with removal. Somebody has to unbolt it from the seller’s floor, and if you are doing that yourself, you need a way to safely lay down two 800-pound columns and a hydraulic power unit, plus a trailer that can haul them. Budget for a day, a helper, and equipment rental.
Then come the consumables. Equalizer cables on a lift of unknown age should be replaced on principle — they are the component that keeps the two carriages synchronized, they fray from the inside, and cable failure is the number-one cause of catastrophic two-post incidents. Hydraulic hoses and cylinder seals are next; rubber hardens and rod seals weep. Lock latches, springs, and the arm restraint gears wear. Anchor bolts should never be reused. Add fresh hydraulic fluid, new arm pads or a slip-plate rebuild, and possibly a power unit motor if it sat in an unheated building. On the jobs where we have inspected a used unit for a customer, refurbishment on an average fifteen-year-old two-post typically lands in the range of a quarter to half of what a comparable new lift costs. Sometimes it is much less. Sometimes it is more than the used lift was worth. The problem with an autolift garage built around a bargain hoist is that you do not know which of those two you have until it is already on your trailer.
The Parts Availability Question Nobody Asks First
This is the single biggest reason we steer people away from certain used lifts, and it has nothing to do with the condition of the steel. The steel is usually fine. What matters is whether you can buy a replacement cable, lock latch, cylinder, or carriage slide block five years from now.

If someone is selling a well-maintained older Rotary two-post, that is a genuinely reasonable buy for an autolift garage, because when a cable stretches you make one phone call and the part shows up. The trouble comes with the flood of off-brand imports that came into the market over the last two decades under names that no longer answer the phone. Those lifts often used proprietary cable ends, non-standard cylinder bores, and lock mechanisms with no aftermarket equivalent. When one component fails, the lift is scrap. We have had customers ship us photos of a cylinder off a lift whose manufacturer went out of business in 2011, and the honest answer was that a custom cylinder build would cost more than the whole unit was worth. Where a Used Lift Genuinely Makes Sense
We are not against used equipment. We install used lifts for customers regularly, and some of the best-value setups we have ever put in were secondhand. The pattern is consistent: it is a major brand, it is under about fifteen years old, it came out of a working shop rather than a barn, and the seller can tell you something about its service history.
A dealership or a fleet shop closing or upgrading is the ideal source. Those lifts got inspected annually because insurance required it, they were greased on a schedule, and they usually have documentation. A lift that spent twelve years in a heated commercial bay is in dramatically better shape than a ten-year-old unit that sat in a damp unheated shed. Look at the cables first — pull the carriage covers and inspect for broken strands, corrosion at the swage fittings, and uneven tension. Look at the columns for rust at the base where water pools, at the anchor holes for spalling or previous repair, and at the arm pivot pins for elongation. Cycle it under load if at all possible before money changes hands. What New Buys You Besides New Steel
The obvious advantages of new are warranty, ALI certification, and a known service history — which is to say none, in a good way. The less obvious advantages are the ones that matter day to day in a home shop.
Modern two-post lifts have better arm geometry. Three-stage front arms reach a long-wheelbase truck’s pinch weld and still tuck in short enough for a low car, which a fifteen-year-old symmetric lift often cannot do. Lock engagement is quieter and more positive. Single-point lock releases mean you are not walking around to two columns. Padded overhead shutoffs, better cable routing, and arm restraints that actually work are all incremental improvements that add up. And on capacity: new lifts are sized for the vehicles people actually own now. A truck with a steel bumper, winch, and drawer system can be over 8,000 pounds, and a lot of older 9,000 lb lifts were designed in an era when that was uncommon. How This One Ended
He drove out and looked at the used lift. It was an off-brand import, the data plate was painted over, and one equalizer cable had visible broken strands at the sheave. The seller could not produce a manual or a model number. He walked, and he was right to.
What he bought instead was a new 10,000 lb asymmetric two-post with three-stage arms, and we installed it in his 32-by-48 shop over a slab that measured out at five inches. Total spend was more than double the Craigslist number and about what the used lift plus a full refurbishment would have run, except with a warranty, certification, and parts he can get for the next thirty years. The oil pan gasket job took him a Saturday morning — pull the skids, drop the sway bar, clean the mating surface properly, torque in sequence, done by lunch. He has not had a drip since.
