An RV and trailer service shop in the Des Moines metro called us last year because differential fluid service on trailers and tow vehicles was eating up bay time they didn’t have to spare — every job meant rolling under a vehicle on a creeper with a drain pan balanced on their chest. Twelve months after we installed their automatic car lift, we sat down with them to talk through what changed, what they’d do differently, and what surprised them. Month Zero: Choosing Overhead vs. Baseplate

Before this shop bought anything, the biggest question was overhead versus baseplate configuration for their automatic car lift. Their bay had roughly 12-foot side walls, which is enough clearance for an overhead two-post lift, but they also service trailers and larger RVs that don’t always fit under a fixed overhead beam the way a passenger car does. An overhead configuration ties the two columns together at the top, which adds structural rigidity and is typically less expensive, but it does put a beam across the top of the bay that can interfere with taller vehicles or roof-mounted equipment on an RV. A baseplate configuration runs a support beam along the floor between the columns instead, which clears the overhead space entirely but means driving over that floor beam every time a vehicle enters or exits. Month One: Install Day and the First Surprise

The surprise for this shop wasn’t the install itself, it was how much floor space the baseplate beam actually occupied once it was down. We’d discussed it beforehand, but seeing it in person made them rearrange where they parked vehicles waiting for service.

That’s a common first-month adjustment. An automatic car lift changes your shop’s traffic flow, not just your work height. Techs who’d spent years walking a specific path through the bay had to relearn where the columns and beam sat. Within a couple of weeks it was second nature, but we tell every new owner to expect a short adjustment period where muscle memory has to catch up to the new floor layout.

Months Two Through Four: Diff Service Becomes Routine

By month two, differential fluid service — draining, refilling, inspecting the diff cover gasket — had gone from a 45-minute floor job to something techs were finishing in under 20 minutes with the vehicle at chest height and both hands free instead of one hand holding a pan. The shop told us the biggest unexpected benefit wasn’t speed, it was cleanliness: fluid draining straight down into a properly positioned catch pan instead of running back along a creeper or pooling under a jack stand.

They also started using the lift’s incremental height locks more than they expected. Instead of setting the vehicle all the way up for every job, techs found a mid-height setting worked better for diff work specifically, since it put the differential at a comfortable working height without needing a step stool for topside tasks. Locks every couple of inches meant they weren’t stuck choosing between fully down and fully up — they picked the exact height the job called for and moved on.

Month Six: The First Real Service Call

Around month six, the shop noticed one of the lift’s arms wasn’t locking as crisply as the others and called us rather than waiting to see if it got worse. That’s exactly the instinct we want customers to have. We came out, found a minor adjustment was needed in the locking mechanism — not a failure, just normal settling and use — and fixed it in under an hour. Month Nine: Training New Techs on the Lift

That’s one of the underrated benefits of a well-installed lift with clear locking mechanisms — it’s intuitive enough that a new hire doesn’t need a manufacturer certification course to operate it safely. Month Twelve: Would They Choose Baseplate Again?

At the one-year mark, we asked directly: would they choose the same overhead vs. baseplate configuration again? Their answer was yes, with one caveat — they wished they’d measured their tallest RV client’s typical roof height even more precisely before finalizing, because a couple of larger units required extra care maneuvering around the baseplate beam. Nothing that caused a problem, just an extra thirty seconds of attention each time.

Overall, the shop’s diff service throughput had roughly doubled year over year, and they’d expanded into offering brake and suspension work on the same lift since the capacity supported it. That’s a pattern we see often — a shop buys an automatic car lift for one specific service line and ends up using it across half their service menu within the first year, because once techs experience working at a comfortable height, they don’t want to go back to floor jacks and creepers for anything.

What We’d Tell a Shop Considering the Same Setup
