That’s fine as a north star, but the real planning has to start with budget, because budget determines configuration, and configuration determines what the contractor needs to rough in before drywall. We ask for slab thickness, rebar layout, and soil compaction reports before we ever quote lift count, because guessing wrong means a lift that shakes under load or, worse, fails inspection. Get this sequencing right during automotive dealership construction and you avoid a change order that costs multiples of what it would have cost to spec it correctly on paper.

Lift Count and Bay Configuration for Race Team Work

How many cars need to be up at once? Is the work primarily two-wheel access or full four-corner access? Race teams doing shock and suspension work in a converted shop building often skip this planning because the space feels smaller and simpler than a dealership. It isn’t, once air tools and lift hydraulics are running at the same time. We size compressor capacity off total simultaneous lift and tool draw, not just lift count, because a compressor that’s adequate for two lifts idle and one running under load will bog down the moment three bays run air tools at once.

Parts Storage and Mezzanine Planning During Construction

Dealership projects almost always ask about parts mezzanines and shelving layout, and race garages should be asking the same question even at a fraction of the scale. Storage planned into the original construction drawings — not bolted on later — lets you use vertical space efficiently and keeps the mezzanine load path coordinated with the building’s structural engineer instead of guessed at after the fact.

We’ve seen twenty-bay dealership additions where mezzanine load calculations got missed until the steel was already up, forcing a redesign of the support columns. A race team’s parts room is smaller, but the same principle protects the investment: if you’re going to stack shelving two levels high in a garage bay, that load needs to be part of the original plan, not an add-on once the concrete has cured and the anchor points are already poured.

Automotive dealership construction timelines run long enough that lift lead times rarely stall the schedule if ordered early, but race garage builds often move faster and get caught by supply timing.
