We recently walked a tire-and-alignment shop owner in eastern Nebraska through exactly this, as he was adding a second bay for wheel bearing service and needed to understand what would show up on his dock, how heavy the crates actually were, and what equipment he’d need on hand the day the truck arrived. Most people picture an automotive garage lift arriving as one big crate, but in reality a two-post or four-post shipment is usually broken into several pieces: two columns, an overhead beam or cable system, arm assemblies, a power unit, and a hardware box. Combined weight on a mid-capacity commercial lift often runs 1,500 to 2,500 lbs total, spread across multiple crates that each still weigh several hundred pounds individually. That matters because shop owners sometimes assume they can hand-unload smaller pieces and are surprised when a single column crate needs mechanical lifting.

For the eastern Nebraska shop, we walked through the packing list before the freight ever left the warehouse so the owner knew exactly what to expect — how many crates, approximate weight per piece, and overall dimensions so he could confirm his dock door and forklift capacity in advance. This single phone call eliminates most freight-day surprises. Forklift Capacity and Dock Requirements

You need a forklift rated well above the heaviest single crate in the shipment, not just above the total shipment weight, since you’ll be lifting one piece at a time. For most automotive garage lift shipments, a 5,000 to 6,000 lb capacity forklift with forks long enough to fully support a column crate is the safe minimum — shorter forks or an underpowered machine can cause a crate to tip or slide during unloading. Reading the Bill of Lading Before You Sign

Never sign a clean bill of lading without inspecting every crate for visible damage first — this is the single most overlooked safety and liability step in freight delivery. If a crate arrives with a crushed corner, a torn strap, or visible impact damage, note it on the delivery receipt before the driver leaves, because that documentation is what protects you if something’s bent or cracked inside once you open it. Freight claims filed after a clean signature are far harder to win, and a damaged automotive garage lift component you unknowingly installed can become a safety issue down the road.

Sequencing the Unload With an Active Shop Running

Most shops can’t shut down entirely for a lift install, and this Nebraska shop needed to keep servicing wheel bearing and alignment customers through the delivery. That means sequencing matters: unload during a slower window, stage crates along a wall out of the main traffic path, and rope off the immediate work zone so techs and customers aren’t walking through an active rigging operation. An automotive garage lift install is not the moment to have foot traffic weaving around suspended loads.

We also recommend briefing your whole team the morning of delivery, even techs who aren’t involved in the unload, so everyone knows which bay is off-limits and for how long. It sounds like overkill for what might be a two-hour unload window, but shops that skip this step are the ones where someone backs a customer’s car too close to a staged crate or walks under a suspended column without realizing what’s happening.

From Crate to Concrete: What Happens After Unloading

Once everything is safely staged, the actual installation — anchoring, hydraulic hookup, cable or chain adjustment, and safety testing — is a separate phase with its own checklist, but it depends entirely on the unload having gone cleanly. A rushed or unsafe unload can damage components before installation even begins, meaning your automotive garage lift starts its life with hidden stress or misalignment that shows up as a problem months later. For the eastern Nebraska shop, the full sequence — dock delivery, forklift staging, rigging into the bay, and final anchoring — took about a day and a half from truck arrival to a lift ready for wheel bearing service work. That timeline is achievable for most shops willing to plan ahead on forklift capacity and staging space.
