Differential fluid service means holding a vehicle elevated at a working height for longer stretches than a typical brake job or tire rotation, often with the drivetrain partially disassembled underneath. That extended hold time is exactly when a weak automotive lift hydraulic pump reveals itself, because a healthy pump and valve assembly should keep the lift rock steady at height with zero drift, while a pump with internal wear will let the lift creep down slowly even with the safety locks engaged as backup.

Testing the Pump Before You Buy: What to Actually Do

Before any money changes hands, ask the seller to run the lift through a full empty cycle, then a loaded cycle with an actual truck, while you watch and listen. A healthy automotive lift hydraulic pump should sound consistent throughout the lift, not straining, whirring, or making a metallic racket partway through the stroke. We’ve seen used lifts where a worn coupler or internal flange inside the pump has begun to shear, and the telltale sign is a sudden whirring or grinding noise paired with lift speed that’s noticeably slower than it should be, sometimes trailing off to almost no movement at all near full extension.

Ask specifically whether the seller has ever had water or contamination get into the reservoir, since that’s one of the more common causes of premature pump failure on lifts that have sat outside or in a leaky building, which happens more than people expect on rural properties. If the seller hesitates or can’t answer basic questions about the pump’s history, treat that as a red flag rather than a minor detail.

Cable Inspection: The Other Half of the Pre-Purchase Story

On a cable-style 2-post lift, the pump only tells half the story, because the equalizer cables that keep both columns rising evenly are just as important to inspect before you buy. Look closely at the cables for fraying, kinking, flat spots, or visible rust, especially near the pulleys and where the cable wraps around the sheave, since that’s where wear concentrates fastest. Any visible strand damage anywhere on the cable is a reason to plan for immediate replacement, not a maintenance item you can put off.

We generally tell buyers to expect a 5 to 10 year service life out of cables under normal shop use, but that shortens considerably in a farm shop environment with more dirt, moisture, and inconsistent lubrication than a climate-controlled bay. If the lift you’re considering is more than a few years old and the seller can’t tell you when the cables were last replaced, budget for new cables as part of your purchase price rather than assuming they’ll last. A pump in perfect condition doesn’t help you if a cable snaps mid-lift, so treat both systems as equally critical to your pre-purchase inspection.

Matching Pump Capacity to Farm Truck and Tractor Weights

Farm shops often lift a wider range of vehicle weights than a typical repair shop, from half-ton pickups to heavier one-ton duallies and occasionally tractors or equipment attachments. Before buying a used lift, confirm the rated capacity matches the heaviest vehicle you’ll realistically put on it, and understand that the automotive lift hydraulic pump was sized by the manufacturer specifically around that rated capacity. A pump that’s been asked to lift loads near or over its rated limit for years is far more likely to show premature wear than one that’s been used well within its design range.

Ask the seller directly what the heaviest vehicles were that regularly went on this lift, and factor that into your assessment of pump condition even if everything tests fine during your visit. A 9,000 lb or 10,000 lb rated 2-post lift is usually plenty for most farm truck work, but if you’re regularly dealing with heavier duallies or towing rigs loaded with diesel fuel and equipment, you may want to look at a 12,000 lb rated unit instead, which typically comes with a correspondingly higher-output pump and motor.

Reading the Power Unit and Motor for Wear

Pop the cover on the power unit housing before you buy and take a real look, not just a glance. Check for signs of fluid leakage around seals, corrosion on electrical connections, and a reservoir that’s clean rather than dark, gritty, or foamy looking. Discolored or contaminated fluid is one of the clearest signs that an automotive lift hydraulic pump has been running under less-than-ideal conditions, and it’s often cheaper in the long run to walk away from a lift with a compromised reservoir than to gamble on flushing and hoping the pump survives the process.

Also ask about the motor’s duty cycle rating, since farm shops that do a lot of repeat diff service, oil changes, and inspections in a single day benefit from a 100% duty cycle motor rather than an intermittent-duty motor designed for occasional light use. If the seller doesn’t know the duty cycle rating, that’s a data point you can usually track down from the motor’s nameplate or the lift’s model and serial number, and it’s worth doing that homework before you finalize a price.

What to Budget for After You Buy

Even a used lift that passes every check on this list is going to need some near-term investment, and it’s smarter to plan for that up front than to be surprised later. Budget for fresh hydraulic fluid, a filter if the model uses one, and likely new cables if you can’t confirm a recent replacement, in addition to whatever purchase price you negotiate.
